Regal Glory Gives Brown Record Fifth Jenny Wiley

Peter Brant's 'TDN Rising Star' Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) got the jump on stablemate Shantisara (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) with three-sixteenths of a mile remaining in Saturday's GI Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland and dug in gamely to hold off her younger rival to prevail, providing trainer Chad Brown with a record fifth Jenny Wiley win, all since 2015. Brown overtook his mentor Bobby Frankel and Hall of Famer Bill Mott with the win.

“I'm a lucky guy with owners like Mr. Brant and plenty before him that have sent me a lot of nice fillies, and I had a great teacher [the late Hall of Famer trainer Bobby Frankel],” Brown said. “I just read yesterday I'm tied with Bobby's record, and I was thinking of him walking down here. I spent a few Jenny Wileys in the paddock with him when I was working for him and he taught me a lot. Luckily, I've had the horses and the team to work with these horses.”

Off a half-step slow, Regal Glory tugged Jose Ortiz up into second to press pacesetting Navratilova (Medaglia d'Oro) as Shantisara and Flavien Prat enjoyed the run of the race from a rail-skimming and joint third. Felt for three-eighths of a mile from home, Regal Glory claimed the front-runner with ease a furlong and a half out and kicked home a strong winner.

Shantisara was asked for her best in upper stretch and launched one final desperate inside bid, but fell short. 'TDN Rising Star' Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) overcame a slow start to pick up third money.

A three-time graded winner for the late Paul Pompa, Jr., Regal Glory topped the Pompa dispersal at Keeneland January in 2021 on Brant's bid of $925,000. Dam Mary's Follies, who is also responsible for dual G1 February S. hero Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah), was sold to the BBA Ireland for $500,000 at the same event.

Regal Glory, three-for-five last year topped by a win in Del Mar's GI Matriarch S. Nov. 28, kicked off her 6-year-old campaign in style with a win in Gulfstream's GIII TAA Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational S. Jan. 29. Her loaded resume also includes wins in the 2019 GII Lake Placid S. and GIII Lake George S.; the 2020 GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf S.; and a runner-up finish in last year's GI First Lady S. at Keeneland.

“I especially want to thank Mr. Brant for not only stepping up and buying her here at Keeneland out of the dispersal for Mr. Pompa, another dear friend and client of ours,” Brown said. “It was [Brant's] call to keep her in training this year. I probably would have bred her, and he said, 'No, she's in good form and I want to see her run another year. I have a feeling this is her year,' and so far he's right.”

Brown continued, “She's extremely competitive. She knows where that wire is, and with Shantisara–that's a real horse running at her. For [Regal Glory] to hold her off and to show she can get a mile and a sixteenth twice now. It looks like she could even go a little bit farther.”

Pedigree Notes:

Team Valor homebred champion Animal Kingdom is truly a product of the world. By a Brazilian-bred stallion and out of a German-bred mare, he won the GI Kentucky Derby in the U.S., the G1 Dubai World Cup in the U.A.E., raced in England, and has now stood in North America, Australia, and Japan. The only continents he lacks a connection to are Africa and Antarctica.

While Animal Kingdom's first Japanese foals are just yearlings, he left 10 black-type winners and four graded winners from his North American crops. He has three Grade I winners in the U.S.: Regal Glory, Oleksandra (Aus), and Duopoly, while his Untamed Domain is a Grade II winner who was runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
Both Regal Glory and Animal Kingdom's Australian multiple listed stakes winner Mystery Miss (Aus) are out of More Than Ready mares, with the pair being two of More Than Ready's 131 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Mary's Follies, a MGSW who sold at the 2021 Keeneland January sale for $500,000 to BBA Ireland while in foal to Curlin, is not only the dam of Regal Glory, but also of Japanese MG1SW Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) and U.S. MGSW Night Prowler (Giant's Causeway). She lost the Curlin foal she was carrying in 2021, but has the 2-year-old colt Ready to Connect (Connect), who sold at OBS March for $180,000 to Chad Schumer after working a furlong in :10.1, and a full-brother to Cafe Pharoah born Feb. 26.

Regal Glory's ninth dam is the Man o'War mare Warrior Lass, whose daughters included the dams of 1971 Broodmare of the Year Iberia (dam of champion and Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge), 1944 Belmont S. winner Bounding Home, and 1951 Preakness S. winner Bold.

Newmarket Dream Closer For Dr Zempf After Trial Success

“I'd love to win an English Guineas,” Ger Lyons said after watching TDN Rising Star Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) collect in Saturday's Listed Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2,000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown. Always travelling easily in second throughout the early stages under Colin Keane, Peter Brant's G1 Phoenix S. runner-up took control two out and held off The Acropolis (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) to reward takers of 11-10 by half a length, with a length back to fellow TDN Rising Star New Energy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in third. Lyons was not getting carried away, however. “I do think he is a good bit shy of the favourite [Native Trail] at the moment, but at least that's the first box ticked,” he said reflecting on the Apr. 30 Newmarket Classic. “He parked in front–he only does enough and is one that wants to be arriving late on the scene. He had a good blow after, so there's plenty of improvement but if he's going for the big one there needs to be. We were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole over six last year, so I never thought going seven or a mile would be a problem. He has a good temperament and was just running a bit free early on.”

Dr Zempf's stamina has to be taken on trust on pedigree, being a son of the six-furlong G3 Prix Eclipse winner Souvenir Delondres (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) who is a half to the Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S.-placed I'm So Glad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}). Related to the GII Schuylerville S. winner Distinct Habit (Distinct Pro) and the dual listed-winning sprinter and G3 Prix de Seine-et-Oise runner-up Terroir (Ire) (Fairy King), the dam has a connection with the GI Preakness S. hero Red Bullet (Unbridled) and this stable's G3 Solonaway S. winner Brendan Brackan (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}). Souvenir Delondres also has a 2-year-old
filly by Kingman (GB) and a yearling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB).

Mack, Brant Return from Humanitarian Mission on Ukraine Border

A horse owner and a philanthropist, Earle Mack has a well-deserved reputation of being there for people in need and getting things done, so it should come as no surprise that he led a delegation that brought medical supplies, food, clothing and other essentials to Ukrainian refugees who had made their way to the border with Hungary. He's back now, after a mission he said was some parts sad, some parts gratifying and some parts inspiring. He achieved what he set out to do, make a difference.

“It was emotionally a very difficult experience, but I'm happy we went,” said Mack, who enlisted Peter Brant to come with him on the trip. “The stories I heard about the indiscriminate shooting of women and children and the looting were horrific and brought me to tears. People who lived there all their lives had to leave their homes in order to save their lives. Wives and mothers left their husbands and sons behind to fight. Some of the women and children I visited at the Budapest Church Refugee Center had to walk in the freezing cold to the western borders, fearing being bombed along the way.”

The Russian invasion of Ukraine hit home with Mack for many reasons, including that he is of Ukranian descent. His grandfather emigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine, arriving at Ellis Island in 1900. The Mack family would enjoy considerable success in the U.S., and Earle Mack has always put his personal wealth to good use. One of his pet causes was the Man o'War Project, the first university-led research trial to establish manualized guidelines for the application of Equine-Assisted Therapy for treating veterans with PTSD.

“Seeing this horrific killing of innocent people that started going on because Vladmir Putin wants to reclaim and rebuild his Soviet empire, I felt like I had to do something,” Mack said.

So one morning he picked up the phone and called former New York Governor George Pataki. Pataki is the founder of the Pataki Leadership Center and a trustee of the Advisory Council of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation. The Appeal of Conscience Foundation is an interfaith partnership of corporate and spiritual leaders from all faiths who come together to promote “peace, tolerance and ethnic conflict resolution.” Mack convinced Pataki to work with him on a project to bring relief to Ukranian refugees.

Rabbi Arthur Schneier is the president and founder of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation and a survivor of the Holocaust.

“Today the world is responding to the people of Ukraine and to lend assistance to Hungary and neighboring countries who have opened their doors to those fleeing,” Schneier said. “As a refugee myself, I know what it means to be hungry and to go days without food. I know what it means to flee your home with little more than just clothing on your back. The terror I lived through is part of my life each and every day. For that reason the Appeal of Conscience Foundation is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Pataki Leadership Center in this humanitarian mission in helping to provide the essentials that will assist the displaced refugees.”

Mack's next call was to Brant.

“The Ukrainian people really need our help,” Brant said. “Whatever we can do, big or small, we need to do for them now.”

Mack, Brant and Brant's wife, Stephanie Seymour, went to work, gathering as much clothing as they could find. Mack said Seymour spent $30,000 of her own money to buy clothes. Clothes were a big part of the mission because most refugees could bring only a few items of clothing when leaving their homes. Mack said they filled and distributed 40 duffel bags full of clothes.

Mack and Brant departed Florida with a plane load of supplies last Thursday and met Pataki in Hungary. Brant's son and daughter also traveled to Hungary.

“The people were so grateful,” Mack said. “We tried to give the parents money. They had nothing but they wouldn't accept any money from us. They are such proud people. That was inspiring.”

While the clothing they handed out was appreciated, it was a simple gift that seemed to have the most impact. Mack and his crew distributed chocolate bars to the children at the Mukachevo Refugee Center.

“The children were crying when we got there,” said Mack, the former ambassador to Finland. “We played games with the children and brought them chocolate, which I knew would make them smile. One of the directors told us that was the first time they had seen the children laughing since they arrived. I explained to these children that the world was watching them and that they are heroes. They'll remember what their parents went through to get them out of there.”

Brant and Mack have returned, but they left behind a team of professionals who will remain at the Hungarian Ukrainian border to assist local officials and healthcare workers in aiding the refugees. Mack's work in Ukraine may not be done.

“How did it feel? I was so inspired,” he said. “It made me want to do more good, to continue to do good with my life.”

Bleecker ‘Streets’ Rivals in Hillsborough

Peter Brant's Bleecker Street (Quality Road) continued her rapid ascent through the turf distaff division with a thoroughly dominating performance in the GII Hillsborough S. at Tampa, easily accounting for her commonly owned stablemate Rocky Sky (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) to remain unblemished from five starts.

While 'TDN Rising Star' Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) held the early call as the Hillsborough field galloped past the stands for the first time, it was Gladys (Medaglia d'Oro), the own-sister to Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, who took up the running into the clubhouse turn, as Rocky Sky fell into the box seat. The weak-in-the-market Bleecker Street–who eased from 9-5 out to 12-5 at the off–was comfortable in seventh. Switched off beautifully through the middle stages beneath Hector Diaz, Jr. Bleecker Street raced in hand on the second turn and was angled out sharply at the quarter pole. Briefly following the move of Rocky Sky in upper stretch, Bleecker Street was switched off heels and into the clear and was off and gone despite racing on her incorrect lead through the final eighth of a mile. Rocky Sky was clearly second ahead of Gladys, who picked up some valuable graded black-type in third.

Given a comparatively soft introduction to the races last year, Bleecker Street won starts at Monmouth and the Meadowlands before resuming with a fast-finishing half-length allowance tally at this venue Jan. 8. An overlaid 7-1 when testing stakes waters for the first time in the GIII Endeavour S. Feb. 5, the $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad was the recipient of a similarly patient ride from Diaz, Jr. and whooshed home with what has become a devastating finish to best Lady Speighspeare by a firm 1 1/2 lengths.

Pedigree Notes:

One of 57 stakes winners and 31 graded winners for Lane's End's Quality Road, Bleecker Street is bred on the cross over Danzig-line mares responsible for Illuminant, winner on the grass of the GI Gamely S. Bleecker Street is the first foal for her stakes-placed dam, who was purchased by Branch Equine for $75,000 in foal to Honor Code at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale. The filly's dual stakes-placed second dam is a half-sister to Nan (High Yield), dam of GIII Selene S. winner Power Gal (Jpn) (Empire Maker). Lemon Liqueur, who was RNAd for $19,000 when offered not in foal at KEENOV in 2018, is the dam of a 2-year-old filly by Always Dreaming, a yearling filly by Flatter and is due to the in-demand Not This Time this season.
