Sunday Insights: $1.2m OBS March Grad By Justify Unveiled At Churchill

After clocking :10 flat during the OBS March under-tack show, TENNESSEE (Justify) brought $1.2 million as the second topper when the dark bay colt was purchased by Maverick Racing and Siena Farms. Unveiled here, the Brad Cox trainee races for Siena and WinStar Farm, and was purchased by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds for $250,000 at Keeneland September.

Out of GSP Zinzay (Smart Strike), who went for $525,000 to Summer Wind Equine back in 2016 during Keeneland November when she carrying eventual SW & GISP Moon Over Miami (Malibu Moon), hails from an extended female family which includes GSW She Can't Sing (Bernardini) and G1 Dubai World Cup hero and 'TDN Rising Star' Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper). Up in Toronto, Loose Wire (Street Sense) makes his debut as a 3-year-old against six other more experienced runners. The Sam-Son Farm Ontario-bred was purchased for $925,000 by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable to top the 2021 Fasig-Tipton October Sale. The Kevin Attard trainee's second dam is Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Dancethruthedawn (Mr. Prospector), who is responsible for the dam of GI Whitney S. champ Moreno (Ghostzpper), and the third dam is Canadian Horse of the Year, Eclipse Award and GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine Dance Smartly (Danzig). Out of Indian Miss (Indian Charlie), OXO Equine homebred Bowstreet (Into Mischief) hails from a well-regarded family which includes his half-brothers, champion male sprinter and top five first-crop sire Mitole (Eskendereya) and GISW and GI Belmont S. and G1 Dubai World Cup runner-up Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow).

Indian Miss was initially purchased at the 2018 Keeneland November sale for $240,000 by WinStar Farm while carrying Indigo Miss (Into Mischief), who was hammered down to Larry Best's operation for $525,000 at Keeneland September in 2020. Bowstreet's dam was then purchased by OXO two months later for $1.9 million at KEENOV while carrying this colt. Before entering training with Paulo Lobo, Bowstreet was bought back on a bid of $1.6 million at the Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale last summer. TJCIS PPS

Coastal Invasion (Omaha Beach) debuts for Hoffman Family Racing and Schwing Thoroughbreds after agent Clay Scherer signed the ticket for $700,000 back in April at OBS. Prior to that, the Brad Cox trainee went to Red Wings Enterprises for $200,000 at Keeneland September. Dam Intelyhente (Smart Strike) is a full-sister to GII Darley Alcibiades S. heroine Bel Air Beauty, who produced Canadian champion sprinter Stacked Deck (First Samurai). TJCIS PPS

Perry Martin, who sadly lost his wife and Martin Racing partner Denise back in 2021, received five lifetime breeding rights when he and Steve Coburn's GI Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) was sold to Japan's JS Company, who manages the stallion business at Arrow Stud. Martin purchased MSW Lake Ponchatrain (Afleet Express) in a private sale in 2019 that was brokered by California-based bloodstock consultant Lisa Groothedde and sent her to California Chrome. The result is juvenile Tazawako (Jpn), her first to the races under the tutelage of trainer Mike Maker. California Chrome has been represented by nine 2-year-old winners to date from his first Japanese-foaled crop. TJCIS PPS

Mo Mosa To Stand At Jamaica’s Paradise Farm

GSW Mo Mosa (Uncle Mo) has been purchased to enter stud at Jamaica's Paradise Farms at Spring Village in a deal brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock.

A homebred for Perry Martin and his late wife Denise, Mo Mosa retired with a record of 22-4-4-3 and earnings of almost $500,000.

“We've been looking for a long time for another stallion,” said Chad Schumer. “Uncle Mo is an absolute sensation as a sire of sires. Mo Mosa is a graded-stakes winner from a nice family, and he's beautiful. I'm delighted to buy him.”

Mo Mosa will stand alongside GSW Bern Identity at Paradise Farm.

Pontiff, Half-Brother To Pulpit, Moves To Daehling Ranch In California

Pontiff, a winning son of multiple leading sire Giant's Causeway and half-brother to major sire Pulpit, has relocated from Washington to stand at Daehling Ranch in Northern California for the 2022 breeding season. His fee is $2,500, live foal guarantee.

Bred in Kentucky by Claiborne Farm and sold for $310,000 as a Keeneland yearling in 2011, Pontiff was rated highly enough by original trainer Dale Romans and former owner Donegal Racing to contest Gulfstream Park's $1-million Grade 1 Florida Derby in his third lifetime start as a 3-year-old maiden in 2013, in a race that was won by subsequent Kentucky Derby winner Orb. Following an unplaced finish in that early test, he went on to record victories on dirt in Oklahoma and on turf in Minnesota and Texas, excelling at two-turn distances as an older horse.

Pontiff retired from racing in 2017 with three wins and 17 placings from 35 career starts, and total earnings of $126,481.

He initiated his stallion career in Washington in 2018, and recently stood at Warlock Stables in Spokane. He has 24 registered foals: 14 juveniles and 10 yearlings, with one placed runner.

Produced by the breed-shaping matriarch Preach, a Grade 1-winning daughter of Mr. Prospector, Pontiff is a half-brother to the successful, late sire Pulpit, whose sons at stud include multiple leading sire Tapit. Among the other notable stallions in his family, which features more than 30 black-type horses under his first two dams, are Fed Biz, Johannesburg and Tale of the Cat.

“We are excited to move Pontiff to California, in order to take advantage of the state's lucrative breeding and racing program,” said Warlock Stables owner Tim Floyd, who manages the 11-year-old stallion for a partnership that now includes Daehling Ranch owners Justin and Julia (Daehling) Oldfield and California Chrome's former co-owner Perry Martin. “The Washington breeding industry has shrunk significantly over the past 20 years, so his opportunities here as a young, well-bred stallion are extremely limited.”

“With his extraordinary pedigree, we believe Pontiff deserves a chance to court a better and more abundant broodmare colony in California,” Floyd added. “He is a handsome, charismatic stallion whose early foals really look the part, and whose best-bred foals are in his upcoming crops.”

Pontiff arrived at Daehling Ranch on August 16. He will be featured in a Northern California Stallion Tour on October 2.

California Chrome Co-Owner Passes Away

Denise Martin, the co-owner of California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), passed away June 14 at the age of 61. Martin and partners found the heights of success with the two-time Horse of the Year. The popular seven-time Grade I winner, whose victories included the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Dubai World Cup, currently stands in Japan.

Martin was the wife of Perry Martin, who also co-bred California Chrome. The couple split from their partners in the horse and founded Martin Racing in 2016, the same year California Chrome won his second Horse of the Year title. They have remained active in the horse business and recently won the GIII Steve Sexton Mile S. with homebred Mo Mosa (Uncle Mo).

“Denise greatly enjoyed interacting with racing fans, whether she communicated with them in person or through California Chrome's official social media channels,” said Perry Martin. “She also was solely responsible for all of Martin Racing's charitable giving endeavors.”

Martin was a chemist. She served as CEO of Martin Testing Labs in Sacramento from 2000 to 2020. She previously worked for the United States Air Force as a civilian employee at McClellan Air Force Base. The Martins were living in Wyoming at the time of her death.

Survived by her husband of 35 years, Martin also leaves behind her daughter, Kelly; her son, Perry, Jr.; and her brothers Andrew and Richard Brudniak.
