Jockeys And Jeans Stallion Season Sale Begins Tuesday, Jan. 10

Bidding opens for the Jockey and Jeans Stallion Season Sale, benefitting the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, on Tuesday Jan. 10 at 9 am ET and ends Thursday, Jan. 12 at 9 pm ET with a preview beginning Jan. 9. All funds raised by the all-volunteer group goes to the PDJF, which pays a monthly stipend of $1,000 to over 60 jockeys who suffered career-ending injuries.

Donating farms include Airdrie, Calumet, Claiborne, Darby Dan, Crestwood, Hill 'n' Dale, Spendthrift, Taylor Made, Darley, Gainesway and Walmac

Jockeys and Jeans Stallion Season Sale Begins Jan. 10

The seventh Jockeys and Jeans Great American Stallion Season Sale to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund will be previewed on Starquine.com Jan. 9, with bidding beginning at 9 a.m. Jan. 10 and concluding 9 p.m. on Jan. 12. The sale includes both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse stallions based in states including Kentucky, Florida, New York, California, and Texas.

“Sadly, career-ending injuries happen to jockeys in both industries and this is a great example of the two coming together in a meaningful way to provide funding for those whose lives changed forever while participating in horse racing, a sport we all know and love.” said Jockeys and Jeans President Barry Pearl.

The PDJF pays a monthly stipend of $1,000 to 60 riders from both industries who suffered catastrophic career-ending injuries. Two-thirds of them are now quadra or paraplegics.

This is the third year in which Quarter Horse seasons are being sold, solely through the efforts of the retired legendary Quarter Horse Jockey, G.R. Carter. Proceeds from Thoroughbred season sales slightly topped Quarter Horse seasons the first year, but last year Quarter Horse seasons took a slight lead.

“They gave a big part of their lives to a sport that made me and many others very successful,” said Carter. “And all of us owe it to them to give something back.”

This year's event will hold a new name, Jockey Jam, and see the addition of a karaoke dinner fundraising event, Jockey Jamboree, to be held Friday, Oct. 28.

“The mission statement behind the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund is one of importance to us and the racing community here at Mahoning Valley Race Course,” said Rob Swedinovich, Vice President and General Manager.

In the events two previous additions, the jockey colony, horsemen, Mahoning Valley's team members, and local community came together to help raise over $5,000 for the cause.

Tickets to the dinner portion of the event remain available for $50 by reservation here. For those interested in only karaoke, doors will reopen at 7 p.m. at the cost of a $20 donation to the PDJF at the door. Fundraising events will continue Saturday at 12 p.m. in conjunction with a special 10-race Best of Ohio stakes card which will see $500,000 in purse money up for grabs for Ohio-bred horses.

Racegoers will have the opportunity to participate in a raffle for a $500 Harley Davidson gift card, a silent auction including several horse racing and sports memorabilia items, and signing and photo opportunities with PDJF recipient Roger Blanco, Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Mike Manganello and Mahoning's local jockey colony.
