Pincay Riding School Graduate Trejos Records Four-Win Day At Gulfstream

Apprentice Joseph Trejos continued to flash star quality  at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., on Friday while producing a four-win day.

Trejos, who rode his first winner in the U.S. at Gulfstream April 18 after winning 44 races in Panama, has won 29 races during the Spring/Summer Meet.

A graduate of the Laffit Pincay Jr. jockey school, where he was selected as the outstanding rider in his December 2018 graduating class, Trejos swept both ends of the early double aboard Josefa ($15.20) in Race 1 and Mister Leonardo ($30) in Race 2, both of whom were saddled by Antonio Sano.

The 23-year-old five-pound apprentice followed up with back-to-back victories aboard R Calli Kim ($10.40) in Race 4 and Matraca ($6.40) in Race 5.

'Yesterday' Looks to Recapture Past in Sunday's Portofino Bay
Yesterdayoncemore will look to recapture her winning form in Sunday's $60,000 Portofino Baby, a 1 1/16-mile overnight turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies, at Gulfstream Park.

Trained by Patrick Biancone, the Irish-bred daughter of No Nay Never has gone winless in four starts since scoring in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf in her Sept. 2, 2019, U.S. debut.

Owned by D P Racing LLC, Mrs. Paul Shanahan and Mrs. M. V. Magnier, Yesterdayoncemore, who ran five times in Ireland, broke her maiden in the Del Mar stakes. She finished off-the-board in her next three races before finishing an unlucky second while coming off a four-month layoff in a June 28 optional claiming allowance at Gulfstream Park. Luca Panici has the return mount aboard Yesterdayoncemore.

Arindel's Onyx, a two-time stakes winner last year, will also trying to recapture her winning form after finishing well back in her three starts this year. Emisael Jaramillo, who was aboard for Onyx's stakes success, has the return mount.

Mijet, Freret, Tournesol, Days of Spring – all winners in their most recent races, and Blue Mistress round out the main body of the field.

e Five Thoroughbreds' Sound Machine, a stakes winner during the Championship Meet on dirt, is a prominent main-track-only entrant in the Portofino Bay. R U Royalty, Don't Get Khozy and Money Never Sleeps are also main-track only entrants.

Race Track Chaplaincy Seeking Nominations For White Horse ‘Heroes’ And Community Service Awards

When the word “hero” comes to mind, we think of someone who puts others before self. Heroes don't do heroic acts for the attention, but usually these selfless acts take place quietly without fanfare and often go unrecognized.

There are heroes all around the horse-racing industry and the Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA) wants to recognize some of these selfless servants.

The Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA) is currently seeking nominees for our 18th Annual White Horse Awards (WHA). While these awards are normally presented at the annual White Horse Awards program in conjunction with the Breeders Cup World Championships, this year's program will take place online at a venue and format soon to be announced.

Nominations are now open and being sought for the following awards:

  • White Horse Award –  An award given to individuals who have done something heroic on behalf of human or horse;
  • Community Service Award –  An award given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the welfare of racetrack chaplaincy

To submit a nomination for either the White Horse or Community Service Awards, visit www.rtcanational.org for a complete list of rules and selection criteria, as well as nomination forms. The deadline for submission is September 14, 2020.

The White Horse Award was established in 2003 to recognize individuals within the horse racing industry for their acts of selflessness and bravery. The most recent recipient was Gilbert Cardenas who was instrumental in saving the life of a gate crew member who had a heart attack just after the horses left the gate.

The overall mission of the Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA), through its Councils and Chaplains, is to minister to the spiritual, emotional, physical, social, and educational needs of those persons involved in all aspects of the horse-racing industry.

Can New Kids On The Block Challenge Prat’s Del Mar Dominance?

In the past two summer seasons at Del Mar the jockey title has been a duel between Flavien Prat and Drayden Van Dyke with each rider prevailing once.

It could happen again.

But Derek Lawson, agent for defending champion Prat, has noted the emergence of some ambitious newcomers on the Southern California circuit and cautions against jumping to a two-man conclusion for the 2020 season that starts today.

“It will be extremely competitive,” Lawson said by telephone Thursday. “I hope we (Prat) do well enough to win. But it's not a slam dunk for anybody.”

Prat tied Rafael Bejarano for the 2016 summer title with 38 wins, led the 2017 meet outright over Bejarano with 35, relinquished the crown to Van Dyke in 2018 by a 42-37 margin and grabbed it back, 42-32, over Van Dyke a year ago.

Prat, a native of Melun, France, who turns 28 next month, has maintained his Southern California circuit dominance and high national profile following a 2019 season in which he won the Kentucky Derby, via disqualification, and a meet-leading 10 stakes victories during the Del Mar summer. He won the Santa Anita winter-spring riding championship with 90 wins over the course of the COVID-interrupted December-to-June season.

Through Thursday, Prat ranks seventh nationally with 97 wins from 372 starters (26 percent) and purse earnings of more than $5.3 million according to Equibase statistics.

To stay at the top this summer, however, Prat will have to fend off a foursome that has put up some impressive 2020 numbers as well. A rundown, with statistics in parenthesis and comments from Lawson.

Abel Cedillo—(No. 14 nationally, 61 wins from 419 starts, 15%, $3.6 million in purses). “He's proven that the move down from Northern California last year was the right one for him and his family and he's in a position to continue to make his mark.”

Van Dyke – (No. 25, 35 for 212, 17 percent, $2.6 million). “He's always going to be at or near the top, especially here. He rides for Bob Baffert and will be on a lot of the very good 2-year-olds Bob breaks out here every year.”

Umberto Rispoli – (No. 27, 50 for 269, 19 percent, $2.5 million). The Italian champion, 31, a veteran of racing in Europe, Japan and Hong Kong decided to come to America and race at Santa Anita last winter. “He's a very good rider, obviously, and he adds an international flavor – with Flavien from France and him from Italy – to the meet.”

Juan Hernandez – (No. 31, 134 for 444, 30 percent, $2.2 million). “He follows the path of Cedillo last year and if you look at the statistics, he's No. 1 in the country for wins. So, obviously, he knows how to get the job done.”

Forty-two wins secured the title the last two years. Lawson, prone to set goals, hopes to book Prat on 50 winners this summer. He realizes it's a high bar.

“It's a shorter season and there won't be fans in the stands,” Lawson pointed out. “That's the same for everybody. The disadvantage for us could be going out of town, but I'm not looking to do it very often. It's going to take hard work, staying focused and some luck no matter what.”

Luis Saez Tests Positive For Coronavirus At Keeneland, Remains Asymptomatic

Jockey Luis Saez was abruptly removed from mounts early on Friday's race card at Keeneland after he was notified he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, according to the Daily Racing Form's Matt Hegarty.

Saez remains asymptomatic for COVID-19, and was tested Thursday morning as part of routine monitoring for jockeys competing at the track. He will now be required to enter a minimum 10-day quarantine period, which means he will be unable to ride Maximum Security in his anticipated summer debut in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap next weekend.

Two days ago on July 8, fellow jockey Martin Garcia tested positive for the virus as part of routine testing required to ride at Keeneland. Garcia had been on his way to ride at Indiana Grand when he was informed of his test results.

In the past ten days, Saez has ridden at Keeneland, Indiana Grand, Belmont Park and Los Alamitos. Agent Kiaran McLaughlin told Hegarty the rider had tested negative for the virus when in New York on July 5.
