Kirkpatrick & Co. Presents In Their Care: Aspiring Horseman Blake Dutrow Learning ‘There Are No Shortcuts’

The Dutrow racing family appears to have another member in the pipeline.

Blake Dutrow can still remember how much fun it would be when he would accompany his grandfather, Dick, a top Maryland horseman, to the barn to treat the horses to carrots and peppermints. He has spent his young life learning about racing from his father, Chip, and his uncles, Tony and Rick.

“The best horse racing families you see pass it along from generation to generation,” said Blake, 31.

Blake is an understudy to Rick as his uncle makes a comeback from a 10-year suspension punctuated by White Abarrio's rousing triumph in the Whitney at Saratoga. Their relationship extends far beyond mentor and mentee.

Blake has been unwavering in his love and support for Rick as his Kentucky Derby-winning uncle served a suspension that represented one of the sternest disciplinary actions in the sport's history.Blake lived with his uncle during the early years of the punishment. He was always willing to listen when Rick needed to talk.

“I wasn't looking for friends when I was out,” Rick said. “But he was there.”

They would retreat to Rick's basement on Sunday afternoons during football season, just the two of them. And they would talk racing.

“He would always tell me, 'Blake, I'm going to get back and we're going to win big races,'” Blake recalled. “There were times when I thought he might not even have the chance to get back.”

If there was to be a comeback, Blake decided his uncle would not go it alone. “I kind of knew whether it was five years in or the full 10, that I would do whatever I could to help Rick,” the nephew said.

They started at Belmont Park in early April with one horse, a filly named Recognize. “I'll rub her,” Dutrow told Blake, “and you'll walk her.”

Owners who had not forgotten that Dutrow trained 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown or that he won the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2005 with Horse of the Year Saint Liam, among other accomplishments, gradually returned.

Blake stood with his uncle when Prince of Pharoahs, his first starter, won on May 6 at Belmont Park. They were again side by side when White Abarrio, transferred to their rapidly-growing barn ahead of a solid third-place finish in the Met Mile, drew off to win the Whitney by 6 ¼ lengths on Aug. 5, Rick's 64th birthday.

“It's crazy how fast it all happened. If you would have said we were going to run in the Whitney this summer, let alone win it, I would probably have said 'You're crazy,'” Blake said. “But if anybody is crazy enough to do it, it's definitely my uncle Rick. He tells me all the time, 'We're going to win another Derby. We're going to win Breeders' Cup races and get back to where we were before.'”

This story is very much a family affair. Chip accompanies any horses that need to be shipped out of town for races. Blake stays behind to oversee a small string at Saratoga and will remain there until that meet closes on Labor Day. Rick trains the majority of horses at Belmont Park.

Rick said of his nephew's role, “We're trying to give Blake the chance to learn the horse racing game. He wants to learn it and he has plenty of opportunities to do that.”

Due to the lack of staff at this early stage, there are times when Blake must figure out things for himself. That may not necessarily be a bad thing.

“We don't rush him to learn,” Rick said. “He learns on his own, just like I did, just like most horsemen do.”

However checkered Rick's past might be due to assorted violations, his passion for his horses is undeniable. Blake sees that every day.

“To guys like Rick, they live for it,” Blake said. “If he could make the days longer so he could spend more time with the horses, I'm sure he would.”

Blake has accompanied his uncle back to the barn after dinner. “That's his favorite time of day – at night – because nobody is there,” the nephew said. “When you come and see your horses, all of their necks are out. They're just so happy to see him because they know exactly why he's there, to feed them candy.”

Sweet moments, indeed, taking Blake back to those carrots and peppermints with his grandfather. The Whitney provided an incredible moment. Rick also wants his nephew to understand that the Whitney stems from attention to the daily grind.

“He's got to go all in all the time,” Rick said. “There are no shortcuts to being a good horseman and that is what we want Blake to be.”

Blake understands that he has so much to learn from Rick, his father and his uncle, Tony, if he is to train on his own. That is a goal worth chasing.

“I love horses. I have the passion for it,” he said. “It's definitely in my blood as something I believe I was born to do.”

Apprentice Rivera Pilots First Career Winner At Gulfstream Park

Jon Rivera celebrated the first win of his riding career when guiding Pesky to a 1¼-length victory in Race 2 of Sunday's program at Gulfstream Park.

The 22-year-old native of Puerto Rico got away from the gate sharply aboard the Arindel homebred 2-year-old colt to chase pacesetter Dudewithaname during the backstretch run of the 5½-furlong maiden claiming race. The 10-pound apprentice gave Pesky his cue into the homestretch and the Florida-bred son of Union Jackson responded to pass the tiring pacesetter and draw off to a comfortable victory.

“I feel great. It's a dream come true to be winning races out here and having fun,” said Rivera, whose family has been involved in racing in Puerto Rico for generations.

Rivera ventured from Puerto Rico to Ocala to prepare for his riding career.

“When I came here, I went to Ocala. I want to thank Abracadabra Farms for always giving me a chance,” said Rivera, who also worked for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse for a few years.

Pesky ($9.20), Rivera's fifth career mount, followed Juan Alvarado-trained stablemate Dot ($5.60) into the winner's circle to complete an Arindel Daily Double ($31.60) to kick off Sunday's card.

Women Rule: Turner-Led Ladies Team Captures Shergar Cup Jockey Competition At Ascot

Winning doubles by Hollie Doyle and Saffie Osborne ensured that the Ladies Team edged out the Rest of the World Team 78-73 to secure the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup international jockey competition Saturday at Ascot Racecourse.

Doyle picked up points on all five of her rides during the afternoon, winning on The Very Man in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers and Regal Empire in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic. Her haul of 48 points saw her take home the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle for the day's leading rider.

Doyle said: “I haven't won the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle before, so it's great to have that on my [record]. I got to ride in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup first when I was an apprentice, and it let me showcase myself on a wider stage internationally. I rode a winner for Clive Cox and I ended up riding out and had quite a few winners for him — I actually rode him a listed winner — so something really did come of that opportunity, and I think it is important in that regard. It's a very good meeting and Ascot do a great job.”

Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup newcomer Osborne took the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge on Scampi before securing victory for her team on board Dark Trooper in the concluding Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint.

Hayley Turner, the most successful jockey in the history of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, captained the Ladies Team but was unable to add to her 322 points.

She said: “It has been good fun again and it is nice to have all the family here. This has been the best Ladies Team we have ever had – I did not get any points at all and they carried me. It has been great fun and I hope I can do this for many years.”

Kazuo Yokoyama made his first ride at Ascot a winning one as he triumphed on Rogue Lightning in the opening Dubai Duty Free Shergar Dash, with Matthew Chadwick and Joao Moreira also making significant contributions to the Rest of the World's 73 points.

Late call-up Thore Hammer Hansen steered Perotto to glory in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile, helping Europe to finish third with 54 points, with Great Britain and Ireland fourth on 35 points.

Frankie Dettori, who captained a Europe Team that also included Olivier Peslier, said: “The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is good for people who know little about racing. I have seen a lot of kids here, a full crowd, and it's got a different feel to it.”

Great Britain & Ireland Team Captain Luke Morris said: “It has been a fabulous day, with a great crowd, and everyone has really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, we did not get a winner, but there has been a real good buzz about the place. Declan [McDonogh] and Tom [Marquand] are ultimate professionals to ride with, and it would be great to come back again.”

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said: “It has been another brilliant Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, with the competition going all the way to the final race. It was fantastic to see Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle winner Hollie Doyle and debutante Saffie Osborne ride doubles to land the competition for the Ladies, their fourth success in the last eight renewals.

“We were also thrilled to see international success for Kazuo Yokoyama, which will have been hugely popular in Japan, and delighted that Thore Hammer Hansen rode a winner after stepping in so late in the day.

“Andrew Balding takes home £12,500 for his yard as the leading trainer on the day and, once again, we are hugely grateful to all the trainers and owners for supporting this unique event. There has been more than £500,000 on offer to participants today, which we wouldn't be able to do without the sponsors Dubai Duty Free, so a huge thanks goes to them for their continued to long-standing support.”

Apprentice Olver Finding Success At Monmouth In First Full Season As Jockey

Madison Olver set two reachable goals for herself in 2023, her first full year as a jockey. One was to be the leading apprentice rider at Monmouth Park this summer. The other was to win a stakes race.

The 24-year-old is well on the way to achieving the former and is a couple of second-place finishes shy of attaining the latter.

“I'm pleased with the meet I'm having so far at Monmouth Park,” said Olver. “I've noticed business starting to pick up. When you're new to a place it can be tough to break in. But (agent) Shawn Klotz and I kept grinding away.

“Things seem to be going well right now. I have a lot of barns willing to support me.”

Olver heads into the weekend with a 14-9-9 line from 69 mounts at Monmouth Park. That puts her in ninth in the track's rider standings. It's a significant accomplishment for someone who had just 38 mounts coming into the year.

Overall, she has 26 wins in a riding career that began last year at Aqueduct.

“It's a game of perseverance and learning and patience and discipline,” she said.

Olver, a native of Fort Collins, Colorado, and a graduate of Colorado State University, still faces plenty of challenges in trying to establish herself. While she is scheduled to ride in five races on Sunday's 10-race card at Monmouth Park she is not in either stakes race that day – the $100,000 Select Stakes and the $100,000 Oceanport Stakes.

In the only two stakes mounts in her career so far, Olver has a pair of second-place finishes, both aboard Super Chow this summer at Monmouth Park.

“You're always proving yourself,” she said.

As a female rider the challenges can be more difficult, even though only one female rider (Ferrin Peterson in 2020) has won more races at a Monmouth meet than Olver since 2013.

“There are a lot of female riders at Monmouth Park, but it can still be difficult as a female rider,” she said. “I still think a lot of people aren't used to it. Monmouth Park is one of the places that is the most open to it.

“I think there are a lot of people willing to give you that first chance to ride for them, but I'm not sure you always get the benefit of the doubt sometimes.”

Olver is one of seven female jockeys to have ridden at Monmouth Park this summer.

She became part of that list almost by accident, not deciding until she graduated high school that becoming a jockey was something she wanted to do.

“I've been riding horses my whole life, but I actually learned about how to race horses when I studied in France,” said Olver, who will be a bug rider through February. “It wasn't until after I graduated college that I thought about it seriously. I wanted to get my degree but I also wanted to become a jockey. Until I graduated high school it was not something I thought about or knew was within the realm of possibility.”

Olver can't envision herself doing anything else now.

“I just want to keep learning, keep gaining experience, and continue to make good connections,” she said. “I am willing to put in the work to be successful.”
