Hot-Riding David Cabrera Wins 10 Races, Voted Jockey Of The Week

Jockey David Cabrera ended the extended holiday racing week at Oaklawn Park taking the first four races on Monday adding to his two wins on Sunday and four wins on Saturday for a total of ten. The win total earned Cabrera the honor of Jockey of the Week for Feb. 14 through Feb. 21. The honor, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

On the heels of winning his fourth straight riding title at Remington Park, David Cabrera entered the 2021-2022 meet at Oaklawn Park with the intention of winning his first local riding title. His ten wins last week keeps him in hot pursuit of that goal.

Cabrera and his agent, Joe Santos, make it a point to ride for several trainers. Many times, on any given race day, Cabrera's mounts are each for a different trainer. This past week he rode four winners for Karl Broberg, two for Ron Moquett and one each for Don Von Hemel, Wesley Hawley, Tim Martin and John Ortiz.

A native of Mexico, Cabrera has been riding professionally in the United States since 2013 making Remington Park his base. His other tracks include Lone Star Park where he was leading jockey and apprentice jockey in 2014, Sam Houston Race Park and Prairie Meadows where he won his 1,000th career win on Sept. 9, 2019. Career win 1,500 came at Remington Park on Nov. 13, 2021.

Currently, Cabrera sits in a tie with Francisco Arrieta for second place in the Oaklawn Park jockey standings with 30 wins, just one behind leader Ricardo Santana, Jr. Cabrera's mounts this season at Oaklawn Park have earned more than $1.5 million. His two stakes wins to date this meet include the Fifth Season aboard Rated R Superstar for trainer Federico R. Villafranco and the American Beauty on Miss Mosaic for trainer Ben Colebrook.

Cabrera's statistics for the week were 26-10-4-0 for a 53.8 percent in-the-money rate and $300,720 in total purse earnings.

Other nominees for Jockey of the Week were Victor Carrasco with two stakes wins at Laurel, Trevor McCarthy who won eight races for the week and a stakes race at Aqueduct, Flavien Prat with two stakes wins at Santa Anita, and Joel Rosario who won the G2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds.

Jockey Jansen Melancon Finding Success Across State Lines At Sam Houston

In the business world, there are countless stories about family-owned businesses transitioning between generations. In the racing industry, training mantles have been passed down between parent and child with tremendous success. But obstacles are plentiful when the son of an elite jockey chooses to pursue that same career path.

Thoroughbred jockey Jansen Melancon is a prime example. The 33-year-old rider is the son of one of the top riders in the country, Gerard Melancon. Known affectionately as Gee-Money, Gerard has won 5,048 career races and with his outgoing personality and bevy of top trainers in his hip pocket, seems destined to ride for many more years.

His son, Jansen, shipped his tack to Sam Houston Race Park in January and is currently tenth in the standings. It's difficult for members of the Sam Houston jockey colony to command attention with veterans Stewart Elliott and Ry Eikleberry winning races for top horsemen Steve Asmussen and Karl Broberg. But last weekend, racing fans in Houston and across the country saw the talent of Jansen Melancon.

He returns to action this week off a notable showing last weekend. He guided Gold Declaration to a driving runner-up finish at odds of 34-1 for trainer Terry Eoff on Friday, Feb. 18. On the Texas Preview card, he scored an adroit stakes win aboard Chief Brady in the $75,000 Jim's Orbit. Melancon, riding for horseman Dallas Keen, found an opening on the rail and confidently navigated the 3-year-old to the wire.

Jansen began riding in 2008 and has won 761 races from over 7,300 starts and purses of $14.2 million. Becoming a professional jockey was all he ever dreamed about, and he always had the support of his father.

“He never discouraged me, ever,” stated Jansen. “He always wanted me to be happy.”

But for many years, being the son of Gerard Melancon created imposing obstacles. Annette Melancon, wife of Gerard, and mother to sons Jonas and Jansen, remembers it well.

“People would tell Jansen that he had big shoes to fill or call him 'little G' referencing the well-known tag of 'Gee Money,'” she recalled. “It was difficult for him.”

Jansen had a tough time with it, but soldiered on as he made the rounds, picking up mounts for a number of horsemen.

“When I first got going, Joey Foster was one of the trainers who stuck his neck out for me,” he said. “Throughout my career, I've never ridden first call for a barn; I've always had mounts for many horsemen, and I appreciate each of them.”

Jansen faced challenges for many years; there were wins, but he was far from an overnight success. Alcohol played too much of a role in his life and he chose to face his addiction.

“I have been sober for two years now and have never felt better,” he explained.

Jansen always had the support from his parents and his wife, Brooke. They live just a subdivision away from them in Scott, La., with their 6-year-old son, Emmitt.

Gerard Melancon watches pretty much all of Jansen's races and was thrilled with his three-bagger on Jan. 15.

“That was a great night for Jansen,” said his proud dad. “He's always had a hard time riding under me in Louisiana. Hopefully he will pick up some owners and trainers because he has so much talent and he just needs opportunities!”

Jansen is in agreement with Gerard on that front.

“A lot of the trainers knew me as a kid,” said Jansen. “The comparisons to my dad were ongoing, but riding in a different circuit, I am Jansen, not G's son.”

On Saturday, Feb. 19, Gerard won the finale at Delta Downs aboard Frank the Mayor for trainer Keith Charles. That evening, he and Annette settled into their recliners to watch Jansen ride the Texas Preview Night card at Sam Houston Race Park.

Jansen piloted Chief Brady in the $75,000 Jim's Orbit, who had won his debut in January for trainer Dallas Keen. He was stepping up against in stakes company, but Jansen settled the 3-year-old colt on the backstretch before finding room on the rail. The son of Bradester responded gamely and drew off to a three-length victory at odds, rewarding his fans with a $13.20 win payout.

“He's never had dirt in his face, but took it well,” said Jansen. “He was moving nicely and dragging me along; I saw the rail open and took the opportunity.”

Keen had no hesitation is giving Melancon the return call.

“Jansen is a talented rider,” stated Keen. “He shows up in the mornings and listens when I tell him about what the horses like and do not like. He won by six lengths on Chief Brady in his debut and made an impressive move up the rail in the Jim's Orbit.”

In addition to impressing Keen and racing fans last Saturday, Melancon drew rave reviews from his parents.

“Gerard was whooping and hollering watching Jansen win that stakes,” said Annette. “It was exciting; we were very proud of him!”

Jansen has ridden against his father many times in Louisiana and is destined for repeat duels in the future. His approach is that they are just two jockeys trying to cross the finish line first.

“When I am in the starting gate, it doesn't matter who I am riding against,” said Jansen. “It's just me and the horse trying to win the race.”

He will ride at Sam Houston Race Park until the 2022 Thoroughbred season wraps on Saturday, April 9. Jansen and his agent, Bubba Wood have several options open about his next stop.

“I feel I have never worked a day in my life,” he explained. “It's still fun. There's no freer feeling than being on the back of the horse.”

Gov. Hochul Appoints Jerry Zaro To NYRA Board Of Directors

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed Jerry Zaro to the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) Board of Directors, NYRA announced Wednesday. This appointment fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Michael J. Del Giudice and is effective immediately.

Zaro is an active breeder and thoroughbred owner. Among the horses he has campaigned are the New York-bred Blindwillie McTell, a three-time stakes winner; and Baby Yoda, who recorded the fastest Beyer Speed Figure [114] at all NYRA tracks in 2021.

“For generations, New Yorkers have flocked to venues like Saratoga Race Course and Belmont Park to witness world class thoroughbred racing and connect with family and friends,” said Governor Hochul. “The sport drives a far-reaching industry responsible for an enormous number of good jobs and billions in annual economic impact. I am pleased to appoint Jerry to this important role to help ensure continued success for NYRA and the sport.”

A resident of Harrison, N.Y., Zaro is Chair of the Banking and Real Estate Services Department at Sills Cummis & Gross, a full-service corporate law firm with offices in New York and New Jersey. Zaro is actively involved in the real estate industry and develops, owns, operates, and manages industrial, office and residential properties in multiple states.

“Horse racing is an engine of economic opportunity for New York State, and I thank Governor Hochul for the opportunity to join the distinguished NYRA Board of Directors and contribute to the sport I love,” said Zaro. “NYRA is the premier racing circuit in the country because this board and the management team have embraced change and prioritized integrity and safety. The future of New York racing is bright.”

In addition to his private sector experience, Zaro has held numerous commissioner and cabinet level positions in the administrations of the last eight consecutive New Jersey governors. In 2018, he was appointed as a Trustee and currently serves as Treasurer of the Gateway Development Corporation (GDC). The GDC oversees the $30 billion Gateway Project, which involves the construction of a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River; a new Portal Bridge over the Hackensack River; and an expansion of New York's Penn Station.

In addition to the appointment of Zaro, NYRA today announced the departure of Joseph Spinelli from the NYRA Board of Directors.

The organizational structure of the NYRA Board of Directors was established in 2017 according to legislation enacted through the New York State budget, which returned majority control of NYRA back to the not-for-profit organization and dissolved the temporary NYRA Reorganization Board established by the New York State Legislature in 2012.

Three-Time Champion Jockey Oisin Murphy Banned 14 Months Over COVID, Alcohol Breaches

Three-time champion jockey Oisin Murphy has been handed a 14-month ban and a $42,280 (£31,111) fine by the British Horseracing Authority after a hearing over his breaches of rules relating to COVID restrictions and two instances of alcohol use on race days. The ban is backdated to Dec. 8, when 26-year-old Murphy relinquished his license to focus on rehab, and will last until Feb. 16, 2023.

“We would like to thank the independent Disciplinary Panel for their careful consideration of the various complex and unique matters which were covered at this hearing,” a statement from the BHA reads. “Mr. Murphy's breaches of the Rules were extremely serious, reckless and potentially incredibly damaging for the sport. They risked endangering his fellow jockeys and racing industry participants.“The BHA is proud of the way the industry adapted to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and how racing was able to restart quickly and successfully behind closed doors. Mr. Murphy's actions put this at risk. They also occurred at a time when so many people were making great sacrifices to follow the rules and protocols set out by the British Governments and the racing industry.“Mr. Murphy also acted with pre-meditation to deceive the racing industry and public regarding his whereabouts, as well as BHA investigators.“In their summing up, the independent Panel stated that Mr. Murphy's conduct was unworthy of a sportsman and previous champion, and he had let down his colleagues and the sport.“We would, however, also acknowledge that Mr. Murphy later made full, public admissions regarding these offences, and did not seek to contest the rule breaches at today's hearing. He also gave full and frank admissions regarding his personal battles.“All of these matters were considered by the independent Panel in their decisions regarding a penalty for Mr. Murphy.“While it is important that this penalty is served and Mr. Murphy's offences are seen to be acted upon, we would also call on everyone in the sport to respect the admissions that he has made about his physical and mental wellbeing and his need for rehabilitation. The BHA will offer any support that Mr. Murphy requests in this ongoing process.“As with many elite sportspeople, the pressures on jockeys can be significant. We would urge anyone in the racing industry who has suffered from any of the issues outlined by Mr. Murphy in the hearing, or who knows of anyone who is struggling, to contact the various support structures that are in place in British racing. These include Racing Welfare, representative bodies such as the PJA, NTF and NARS, the sport's anonymous RaceWISE reporting line, or the BHA.”

At the hearing, having admitted all charges against him, Oisin Murphy was found in breach of the following rules:1. Rule (J)24.6 on two occasions (17 September 2020 and 12 February 2021) by misleading or attempting to mislead the BHA or one of its employees regarding the destination of his travel in order to circumvent Coronavirus ('Covid') restrictions;2. Rule (J)24 by failing to comply with the BHA's COVID-19 Requirements, by:i. deliberately misleading BHA Officials by providing incorrect information to access multiple racecourses between 13 and 26 September 2020 andii. entering racecourses whilst in breach of Government requirements relating to self-isolation between 13 and 26 September 2020 failing to comply with Government requirements and Racecourse Terms of Condition and Entry contrary to Rule (J)24.4;3. Rule (J)19 by acting in a manner which is prejudicial to the proper integrity, conduct or good reputation of the sport, by: i. on or around 16 September 2020 accessing the licensed training premises of Andrew Balding and engaging in work duties for him, despite being legally required to self-isolate; and
ii. between 11 and 18 September 2020 providing a false version of events during media commitments regarding his true location between 9 and 12 September 2020.4. Rule (K)55 (Alcohol) due to the presence of alcohol above the threshold level of 54 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine in a sample collected from Mr. MURPHY at Chester racecourse on 5 May 2021. 5. Rule (K)55 (Alcohol) due to the presence of alcohol above the threshold level of 17 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath in a sample collected from Mr. MURPHY at Newmarket Racecourse on 8 October 2021.The penalties imposed are as follows:Items 1-3: A combined 11 month period of ineligibility to apply for a license to be served concurrently, and backdated to 8 December when Mr Murphy handed in his jockey's license together with a fine of £31,111.Items 4-5: 10 further days ineligibility for the offence on 5 May plus a further 90 days ineligibility for the offence on 8 October, to be served consecutively. The overall result of these penalties is that Mr Murphy will be ineligible to apply for a jockey's license until Feb. 16, 2023.
