Donna Brothers, Diane Crump Among Speakers For Livestream ‘Trailblazing Horsewomen: Racing Edition’

StreamHorseTV will welcome additional special guests to the roster for the Trailblazing Horsewomen: Racing Edition, a 90-minute livestream featuring conversations with extraordinary women in horse racing about the past, present, and future for females in the industry. The event is brought to you by Starlight/StarLadies Racing.

NBC equine sports analyst and former jockey Donna Brothers, pioneering female jockey Diane Crump, Hall of Fame trainer Janet Elliot, racing's winningest female jockey and Hall of Famer Julie Krone, and steeplechase veteran Jo Motion will be joined by Patti Barton – the leading female jockey in the United States from 1972 until four years after her retirement in 1984 (and mother of Donna Brothers).

And the founders of the Thoroughbred Ladies Cocktail Club – Katie Taylor of Taylor Made Sales and Carrie Brogden of Machmer Hall Farm — will bring viewers an insider discussion aimed toward the next generation of young women looking to get in — and stay in — the business. Taylor and Brogden started the Thoroughbred Ladies Cocktail Club to bring women throughout the horse industry together in a place where they can be themselves with no pressure, no rules, and no agenda.

Our distinguished guests' collective experience spans over three quarters of a century, and you won't want to miss their stories, wisdom and advice.

We will salute the 2022 theme, #BreaktheBias, embracing the avenue to breakthroughs for future generations to find opportunity across the industry.

Viewers are encouraged to comment and ask your questions for our Trailblazers!

Tune-in to hear about Crump's historic first female ride in the Kentucky Derby, Elliot's record-breaking run to surpass her former boss in wins, Krone's unmatched competitive edge, Motion's ascent from riding as a 'stable lad' in wartime England, to working alongside steeplechase's notable names, and Brothers' journey from jockey to TV analyst, the story behind StarLadies Racing, and why she wrote her book, Inside Track: An Insider's Guide To Horse Racing.

For more information on the event, and to find out how to tune in, visit StreamHorseTV's Trailblazing Horsewomen Channel. The event will be directly accessible for free there and on StreamHorseTV's Facebook and YouTube at 6 p.m. EST on Tuesday, March 15. No tickets or RSVP are necessary.

About Trailblazing Horsewomen

The Racing Edition event marks the second installment of Trailblazing Horsewomen, a program launched by StreamHorseTV Director of Content Natalie Mayrath in 2021 as a celebratory gathering for horse-lovers to learn and be inspired by the groundbreaking women of the industry. Mayrath is a former digital producer on Women and Money for Yahoo Finance and series producer of “The Vanguard,” an Emmy-nominated documentary series about influential women in the media world.

“After the overwhelmingly positive response to the first Trailblazing Horsewomen event, we knew we had to continue these conversations, which strongly align with our mission to build an inclusive community across equine sports.  You'll find that this group of exceptional ladies is bound by their ultimate passion for horses, and collectively they've spent decades on the front lines, literally blazing a path for others to follow, which is what this show is all about.”

Southern California Trainer Mullins Setting Up Gulfstream Park Division

Long-time Southern California-based trainer Jeff Mullins is currently in the process of setting up a division at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where he was on hand Sunday morning to observe workouts.

“Every now and then you have to branch out a little bit,” Mullins said. “We just decided to try something new. It's nice to go to a place where you don't have to move, [the year-round schedule] is a plus.”

Mullins sent four horses to the racetrack for workouts Sunday morning, all four owned by Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC.

“We have six now and another six coming until the Championship Meet ends. Hopefully then we can get a few more stalls,” Mullins said.

The 56-year-old Mullins has saddled 1,655 Thoroughbred winners according to Equibase statistics.

Apprentice Ailsa Morrison, ‘Wonder Boy’ Wilfred Vasquez Score Gulfstream Firsts

It didn't take apprentice Ailsa Morrison long to get acquainted with the Gulfstream Park this weekend, scoring aboard Summer Shandee ($55.20) in Saturday's first race in only her third mount since switching her tack from Aqueduct to the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

“I'm on Cloud-9 right now. It's a tough meet – the Championship Meet. To get that win is very special,” the seven-pound apprentice said.

Morrison, who started riding at Woodbine outside Toronto in 2019 before taking a year off, rode three winners from 35 mounts at Aqueduct.

“I listened to my agent who said it would be a good spot in the summer,” said the 23-year-old native of New Brunswick, Canada, whose book is handled by Mike Sellitto. “So, this is where we set our sights on.”

Morrison saved ground aboard Summer Shandee around the first turn in the 1 1/16-mile maiden race on Tapeta while stalking the pace in fourth. Summer Shandee followed front-running Sonic Kitten into the stretch before being steered to the inside, and the son of Summer Front Kicked in to graduate by a length.

“I was patient with him. I was trying to go outside with him for the footing, but the rail opened up,” Morrison said. “The opportunity presented itself and I took a shot and he delivered.”

Morrison, who didn't grow up in a racing family, rode show horses before eventually gravitating to the racetrack.

“I started galloping as a supplement for my event riding to become a stronger rider, and I never looked back,” said Morrison, who rode two horses on Friday's card before breaking through with a victory Saturday.

Wilfred Vasquez Rides First U.S. Winner at Gulfstream
Jockey Wilfred Vasquez, who earned the nickname 'Wonder Boy' in Venezuela due to his success as an apprentice, rode his first U.S. winner in Saturday's Race 3 at Gulfstream Park.

The 18-year-old jockey guided Atomic Rose ($16) to victory in a mile maiden claiming race to notch his career achievement on his 15th U.S. mount.

Vasquez is the youngest winning rider in the history of the Simon Bolivar, Venezuela's most prized stakes race, when he guided Apistos to victory in 2020 at the age of 17.
