Hollie Doyle Pilots Coventry Stakes Winner To Become Leading Female Rider At Royal Ascot

Juvenile Bradsell showed his rivals a clean pair of heels to land a hot renewal of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes in striking fashion on opening day at Royal Ascot, making jockey Hollie Doyle the leading female rider in Royal Ascot history (three wins total).

The son of Tasleet, who looked a superstar when bolting up at York on debut, confirmed the promise of that run by sweeping to the front down the middle of the track. With momentum on his side, Bradsell was able to keep his rivals at arms' length in the final furlong to land the 2-year-old contest by a length and a half.

The strongly-fancied Persian Force came out of the pack to grab second, with Royal Scotsman a neck further back in third. Sent off an 8/1 chance, £47,000 breeze-up purchase Bradsell, who runs in the colours of Victorious Racing Limited, provided his jockey with a third Royal Ascot winner and trainer Archie Watson with a second.

Doyle said: “It was an impressive performance. Bradsell got squeezed out of the gates, which was frustrating, but to begin with I thought I was drawn on the wrong side. However, once I got into a handy position on the girths of them, I knew the further I went, the better I would go.

“Two furlongs down I was pretty confident as they were all sitting ducks. I just thought 'let's go on with this' and he did it pretty well.

“I have done most of his work at home and the further he goes the better, so I was not too worried that that it was a long way from home when I committed because I knew he'd keep galloping.

“His instant response surprised me, as in his gallops he is a little bit lazy, but he turns it on at the track. He hit the line hard and I struggled to pull him up after.

“Off the back of that performance, the world is his oyster. We have to realise that he is a 12,000gns yearling and a £47,000 breeze-up buy. It just shows no matter what you pay, a good one can bring you here.”

Archie Watson said: “It is the place where all of us want to have winners. I had a third in this race, beaten less than three-quarters of a length and it is just incredible to win it now. He is a very, very good horse.

“I said to my fiancé Brodie last night whatever wins this by daylight will be a superstar, I am delighted it is us!

“I thought the win was full of merit. Early on it looked like the near side was well ahead, I was a bit worried we were out on the wing with nothing to lead us there.

“I said to Hollie before to try and get them to take you as far forward in the race as you can before you press the button. She pushed it two down and it was plenty far enough to go!

“He won nicely and it is just incredible. I'm delighted for the whole team, delighted for the owners, Victorious Racing, who bought him. It means the world to all of us.

“He was bought by Tom Biggs [Blandford Bloodstock], he is the genius who bought him. I am very lucky to train the horse he selects.

“He has won his Group 2, he has won the best Group 2, so he'll go to the Phoenix Stakes or the Prix Morny. If he is to run before I should imagine it might be the Prix Robert Papin, but I am not sure he needs to do that.”

Richard Hannon said of Persian Force: “I'm delighted. He ran a super race, he just ran around a little bit. We came here to see if we had a very good horse, and we have, which is the main thing.

“There's a big difference between first and second, but he's still a champion in my eyes and it's up to the horse to prove that. He's run an extremely good race and I'm very proud of him. Tomorrow morning we'll build towards the next race.”

Oliver Cole said of the third: “Royal Scotsman ran really well. He probably did a bit too much in front and the winner has come past us and nicked two lengths off us, and we probably used our two lengths too early. He had too much daylight, basically.”

Canterbury’s Randy Sampson Named Jockeys And Jeans 2022 Person Of The Year

Randy Sampson, CEO and Chairman of Canterbury Park, has been named Jockeys and Jeans' 2022 Person of the Year. Sampson is a member of the Jockeys and Jeans organizing committee and has been helpful in advising it to track relations and fundraising. The track he and his family own in Shakopee, Minn., hosted the 2018 Jockeys and Jeans Fundraiser, raising $268,000. Sampson will accept the award at its eighth annual fundraiser on July 2 at Churchill Downs.

“Of course, I am truly honored,” he said “But there are likely some out there who more deserve the recognition. But it is not about recognition, it's about the opportunity to speak for and help disabled former riders.”

Jockeys and Jeans, an all-volunteer group founded by five former jockeys, has raised over $2 million for Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. Jockeys and Jeans President, Barry Pearl termed Sampson, “a Godsend,” saying: “Not only has he and the track been major contributors, he is roll up your sleeves type of guy who not only knows how to get a lot of things done but is willing to spend the time to get them done.”

Sampson has been the guiding force of Canterbury Park since purchasing the Minnesota racetrack in 1994 with his father Curtis Sampson and Dale Schenian. He served as CEO since 1994 and Chairman since 2020. Under his leadership the Canterbury Park team has revived live horse racing in Minnesota and earned a reputation for innovative ways to attract large crowds and create a family friendly atmosphere. Canterbury also operates a card casino and hosts a wide variety of special events keeping the facility active year-round.

The track gives back 5% of pre-tax profits annually, mainly through the Canterbury Park Minnesota Fund. Sampson, his family and Canterbury Park, have long supported problem gambling organizations, the Racetrack Chaplaincy, the PDJF and recently Jockeys and Jeans. A strong supporter of the now defunct Don MacBeth Memorial Fund, Sampson founded the Leg Up program that provides funding for jockeys injured at Canterbury Park.

He said one of his most vivid memories is running to the track and standing beside a medical helicopter when his long-time friend, jockey Scott Stevens, was severely injured. Jockeys Anne Van Rosen, Paul Nolan and Quarter Horse jockey Tad Leggett, while not injured at Canterbury Park, rode regularly there before they suffered racing injuries that left them in wheelchairs.

“I think all tracks have an obligation to help,” he said. “People like Paul Nolan now live in a rest home and your heart has to go out to them. The sacrifices they made make them the heroes of our sport and we need to help them as we continue to work on the safety issues that hopefully will help us avoid those accidents.”

Fifteen Hall of Fame Jockeys, including 12 who have won 17 Kentucky Derby's and two of the five living Triple Crown winners, are scheduled to attend Jockeys and Jeans at Churchill Downs and honor eight of their fallen brothers and sisters. It will be held July 2, the spring meeting's final day when Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes is run. It begins at 11:00 a.m. in the track's Triple Crown Room, with tickets $75 on sale on Ticketmaster at https://www.ticketmaster.com/event/16005B5CAD1637A6?did=jockey and can be accessed at www.jockeysandeans.com and on the track's website. There will be a live auction of a host of rare racing memorabilia as well as silent auction. The riders, including those permanently disabled, will sign special autographed posters and other memorabilia brought by fans at a special signing in the grandstand.

Northern California Trainer Jonathan Wong Records 1,000th Career Win

Trainer Jonathan Wong recorded the 1,000th victory of his career on June 11 at Golden Gate Fields when Evin Roman guided first-time starter Opening Buzz to a seven-length score in a maiden special weight race for 3-year-old fillies run over the Albany, Calif., track's Tapeta surface.

The California-bred daughter of Stanford was bred and owned by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds.

Wong, 33, a San Francisco native, took out his trainer's license late in 2014, winning his first race with his eighth starter, Pressure Time, on Feb. 6, 2015. He won his first training title at Golden Gate Fields in 2018, edging perennial leader Jerry Hollendorfer, and has dominated the Bay Area track's trainer standings ever since with a stable upwards of 100 horses.

He won the title for Golden Gate's 2022 meet that ended June 12 with 71 wins from 349 starts. Isidro Tamayo was second with 47 wins from 238 starts.

Wong maintains a smaller string in Southern California, where he won his first Grade 1 race in 2020, the Gamely Stakes with Keeper Of the Stars, who the previous year gave Wong his first graded stakes win in the G3 Autumn Miss Stakes.

“I watched the Gamely on the couch at home with my family,” said Wong, who was unable to go to Santa Anita because of COVID restrictions put in place after a serious outbreak at Golden Gate.

Wong was attracted to racing after a family friend invited him to the track as a child. “I was hooked,” he said. He would later decide to try and make a career of it, going to work for a number of trainers, including Lonny Arterburn, John Martin, Kristin Mulhall, and Art Sherman, before going out on his own.

“Never did I think it would get to this,” Wong said.

Wong recognizes owners Tommy Town, Michael Nentwig, Scott Herbertson, Gary Madden, Johnny Tabowada, among others, but said his wife, Meagan, “has been my biggest supporter.” The couple has two boys, one girl and another girl due to arrive in October.

Wong's horses are easy to spot in races as they all wear a black and white breaking strap around their neck. “The majority of my owners don't come out for the races, so they can spot their horses on TV a lot easier than if they didn't have it,” he said. “The white is electrical tape we wrap around the strap.”

Wong is coming off his best year from a races won standpoint, having won 236 races from 1,005 starts. His career totals through June 1: 1,001 victories from 4,128 starts, a 24 percent win percentage, and earnings of $18,004,672.
