Fulfilling Cody’s Wish: Colt Named For ‘Very Special’ Teen Racks Up Another Stakes Victory

The legacy of Cody's Wish just continues to grow.

On July 4, the 4-year-old son of Curlin had to dig deep to repel the late charge of rival Three Technique in Churchill Downs' Hanshin Stakes, prevailing by a neck. That battle echoed that of his namesake, Cody Dorman, who suffers from the rare genetic disorder Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome.

The Dorman family was in attendance for the Hanshin win, getting in the winner's circle with the Godolphin homebred's connections.

“Words really can't describe how special that was,” said trainer Bill Mott's chief Kentucky assistant trainer Kenny McCarthy. “This horse, who is named after someone so special to us and the barn, Cody Dorman, showed so much heart to get the job done today. We're just so happy to play a small part in this very special story. He had to work pretty hard today but he was determined and didn't want to lose.”

It was in 2018 that Godolphin sponsored the family of Cody Dorman at Keeneland's Make-A-Wish Day. During a farm tour, Dorman and the then-unnamed colt Cody's Wish developed a special bond. In fact, the foal actually walked over to Dorman and put his head in his lap.

According to wtvq.com, Dorman's father said that meeting with the Godolphin foal was a rare moment for his son.

“As far as actually hearing him laugh out loud – we've only seen those times maybe I can count on one hand, and he did it that day,” Kelly Dorman told WTVQ.

Dorman has suffered thousands of seizures and dozens of surgeries. Doctors told his family he would only live for two years, but Dorman is 16 years old in 2022.

Following that meeting, farm employee Mary Bourne was inspired and named the colt “Cody's Wish.”

Although Cody's Wish ran third in his first three starts at Saratoga, it was almost as though he was waiting for Dorman to be in attendance when he won his first race. After Cody's Wish shipped to Kentucky last fall, Dorman was on hand for his first three career wins at Churchill Downs.

“This went from a wish and turned into a dream come true,” said Kelly Dorman.

Jockey Carlos Montalvo Suffers Facial Fractures In Lone Star Incident

A spill at Lone Star Park on Monday resulted in minor facial fractures for jockey Carlos Montalvo, reports the Daily Racing Form. The two horses involved in the incident escaped unharmed, as did the other jockey, Ry Eikleberry.

During the fourth race at the Grand Prairie, Texas, track, Montalvo's mount Bling's Bellwether appeared to clip heels in the stretch. Eikleberry's mount, Oh Snap, was unable to avoid the fallen horse.

Eikleberry returned to ride his other mounts on the card, and will ride this weekend.

Montalvo was hospitalized until about 2 a.m. on Tuesday, according to his agent, Bradley White. There is no specific timetable for his return, but it appears the fractures will not require surgery.

“Aside from that, from what we know now, he dodged any major injuries,” White told DRF. “He's going to see a specialist about his face in the next day or two, when the swelling goes down.”

Over a career that dates back to 1999, Montalvo has amassed a record of 1,252 winners from 12,003 mounts.

KEEP Foundation, Race For Education Announce 2022 Scholarship Recipients

The Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) Foundation and The Race For Education (RFE) are proud to announce their 2022 scholarship recipients.

The KEEP Foundation's board of directors approved over $30,000 in scholarships to 13 students attending nine universities across the Commonwealth. All of the 2022 scholarship recipients are students currently enrolled at a university or college in Kentucky in either an equine and/or agriculture related major or their parents work in the equine industry.

In addition to these 13 Kentucky students, the Race For Education awarded its annual Robert J. Frankel Scholarship to two New York state students: Anitza Parilla and Francis Marrone. Now in its 12th year, the Robert J. Frankel Scholarship, in honor of the late Robert (Bobby) J. Frankel, is awarded to students whose family is employed in the Thoroughbred industry, pursuing any field of study at a college or university in California or New York state. Both Frankel Scholarship recipients, whose parents work at various racetracks in New York, will be attending universities in New York.

“We had an excellent group of scholarship applicants this year,” said Alexandra Harper, KEEP Foundation's Executive Director. I am excited for these students to embark on their collegiate careers and also for the future of the equine industry. These students are eager and ready to make a difference, and I'm glad that we can help take some of the financial burden off by awarding scholarships.”
