Jockey Edgar Payeras Celebrates First Thoroughbred Stakes Win At Del Mar

Jaime Renella's Chismosa, a Clubhouse Ride filly making only the second start of her career, put it to a seven 2-year-old rivals in the 69th edition of the California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Stakes Sunday at Del Mar, drawing off through the lane to come home 3 1/2 lengths to the good in the 5 1/2 furlong stakes.

The dark bay or brown filly had captured a maiden special weight race on July 23 at Del Mar in her initial start, then wheeled back 15 days later to become a black-type winner in the 2-year-old filly offering. She earned $71,250 as the winner's share of the $126,000 purse, which means her bankroll now reads $119,250.

Chismosa is trained by Rafael DeLeon and was ridden by Edgar Payeras, who was picking up the first Thoroughbred stakes win of his career at Del Mar.

“Had a good trip all the way,” Payeras said. “She wanted to run and she did all the work. We broke a little slow, but she picked it right up from there. It's amazing when you have one that really wants to do it. All you have to do in get them in a good position, then they do the rest. This is my first stakes win at Del Mar. I'm really happy.”

“I knew we had a nice horse,” DeLeon added. “When she came to the outside I think I got it. I started walking (to the winner's circle) because I felt he (jockey Edgar Payeras) was going to win. The kid (Edgar Payeras) worked my horse the whole time and he knows the horse very well. Last time, he got into an accident on the freeway and couldn't ride the horse.”

Finishing second in the Cal-bred feature was C T R Stables' Chedda Cash, a half-length ahead of Brown, Klein or Lebherz's Sell the Dream, who had gone off the 2-1 favorite in the CTBA.

Chismosa ran the distance in 1:05.26 after working through the early splits of :21.47 and :45.75. She paid $14.80, $6.00 and $3.60. Chedda Cash returned $6.20 and $3.80 and Sell the Dream paid $3.20 to show.

Racing returns to Del Mar on Thursday with an eight-race card starting at 2 p.m.

Jockey Neil Callan Leads Home Great Britain & Ireland Team In Shergar Cup

Great Britain & Ireland produced a superb team performance to take the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, winning five of the eight races to end the competition with a mammoth 132 points.

Three of the four jockeys on the team recorded victories during the afternoon, with Neil Callan scoring on Orbaan in the Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises Classified Stakes and Adaay In Asia in the closing Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint.

Those wins helped Callan secure the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle, presented to the leading jockey at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, with 50 points.

Team-mate Jamie Spencer (37 points) enjoyed a double of his own on Themaxwecan in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers and Hamaki in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic.

Kieran Shoemark (33 points) was also on the scoresheet for his team as he guided Pride Of Priory to success in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge, with Daniel Tudhope contributing 12 points.

Neil Callan said: “There is nothing to dislike about the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, it is brilliant. There is great prize money and Ascot make it a family event to come and watch. It is a great day at our premier track and the fields are competitive.

“This is my third time and I have been on the wining team every year, so I am going to have to retire now! And it is great to have my family here.

“I have ridden with a lot of the international jockeys here over the years, all over the world. It is nice to ride against them on a competitive stage.

“The whole concept is great. Look how much coverage there is and people come to watch – it is not just racing people, and betting and punting and all that, it is families here with kids. They are the next generation – this is what we need to be pushing towards.”

Great Britain & Ireland captain Jamie Spencer said: “We drew some decent horses and I had a couple of good chances, although one did not run so well.

“Today we get to see people you don't see. We call Kerrin McEvoy 'The Sting' and it has been so much fun to have The Sting here today, laughing and joking, reminiscing, as we have been hanging out together for the guts of 20 years now. He has been in Melbourne for the last 14 years and Christophe Lemaire is in Japan. We only get to see them once a year.”

The Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award went to Joanna Mason for her victory on Amanzoe in the opening Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Curtain Raiser Classified Stakes – one of three wins on the day for the Ladies team.

She said: “The whole day has just been amazing and there has been good team morale. It's an honour to be picked to represent the girls and we have given it our best shot. We thought we would have a really good chance today and we have come second, so everyone has done themselves proud. We have won three races and done well.

“It was an honour to ride for Mr [William] Haggas and a good horse makes it a lot easier. I just had to really steer her to victory, all the hard work has been done at home. It was a thrill to ride a good filly like her.

“I was very apprehensive about this beforehand. I was not sure what to expect but it has been an absolutely brilliant day and I have loved every minute of it. I would love to do it again.

“I have loved the team side of it, too, it adds a different dimension. To get the chance to ride with some famous and well-known jockeys when you never would normally – Emma-Jayne Wilson, who is a sensation in Canada, Kerrin McEvoy, Christophe Lemaire. And to get my first winner at Ascot, on a Saturday – I am loving it!”

Ascot Racecourse awarded £25,000 in bonuses for the three leading stables at this year's Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, with the William Haggas yard picking up the £12,5000 first prize thanks to the wins of Amanzoe, Pride Of Priory and Hamaki.

William Haggas said: “The staff deserve every penny, I can tell you. These horses have looked great, they have behaved well and they are focused. Everything has been excellent today and they have run well.”

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said: “It has been another fantastic renewal of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. We are so grateful to all the owners who backed the unique format today and to all the jockeys, especially those that came from overseas.

“William Haggas's yard won first prize of £12,500 in our second stable/stable staff award of the summer after a treble today so congratulations to his team, to the winning home team of jockeys and to Neil Callan, who won the Alistair Haggas Silver Saddle.”

Runhappy Owner Jim ‘Mattress Mack’ McIngvale Pitching In With Kentucky Flood Relief Efforts

Texas-based Thoroughbred owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale's Mattress Mack and Gallery Furniture has launched a Kentucky flood relief effort and their response team is working to help victims of the deadly flooding that swept through Eastern Kentucky.

McIngvale is a staunch supporter of Kentucky's racing and breeding industry. His Gallery Furniture, which he opened in Houston in 1981, is billed as the 'World's Largest Furniture Store'.

In a Twitter post @MattressMack on Friday, McIngvale said: “We have a team on the ground in Kentucky to help remove downed trees, muck out homes and more. Let's pay it forward after all the help we have received after (Hurricane) Harvey. With your help we can continue to do good!”

The first wave of Gallery Furniture's relief efforts will be in the form of soliciting volunteers to do heavy, non-stop manual labor that will include helping to cut up trees, clear paths for vehicles to get through, mucking out homes and more. Brave volunteers who intend to help should be mentally and physically strong and able to survive working hard in the heat.

Additionally, Gallery Furniture and Mattress Mack are soliciting donations to be used to help fund the relief effort.  You can also bring a check, cash, or gift cards directly to Mattress Mack at 6006 North Freeway Gallery Furniture in Houston or donate through GoFundMe.

Maker Tallies 3,000th Career Win At Ellis Park

Trainer Mike Maker won his 3,000th career race Friday at Ellis Park when Palatial Times bounded across the finish line in the fifth race.

Owned by Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher and ridden by Gerardo Corrales, Palatial Times captured the one-mile claiming event by 2 ¼ lengths after pressing early pacesetter The Boss Factor from second then taking over in the stretch for the milestone victory.

Time was 1:36.54. Palatial Times, a 4-year-old son of Palace Malice, returned $7.22.

Maker started out training on his own in Michigan and tallied his first winner April 28, 1993, at Detroit Race Course with Rauros. He then went to work for D. Wayne Lukas' Midwest division at Churchill Downs and Lukas assistant Dallas Stewart, starting out as an exercise rider, then became barn foreman and an assistant trainer. When Stewart departed in 1997, Maker replaced him. He went back out on his own in 2003 and is a leading trainer throughout Kentucky.

During his tenure with Lukas, he handled a number of prominent runners, including Cat Thief, Cash Run, Spain, Orientate, Surfside, and the 1999 Horse of the Year and dual classic winner Charismatic.

On his own, Maker trained 2011 champion 2-year-old male Hansen. Among other Grade 1 winners he trained are Bigger Picture, Fire At Will, Furthest Land , Stately Victor, and Zulu Alpha.

Maker's 15,105 starters have also come in second 2,362 times and third in 1,927 races. Overall, his runners have amassed purse earnings of $137.9 million through August 5.

This year, Maker has a 122-111-113 record from 702 starters that have bankrolled $8,570,926, ranking him fifth by purse earnings among the nation's leading trainers and 10th by races won.
