Cohen Family’s Red Baron’s Barn, Rancho Temescal Top Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet Owner Standings

Longtime California owner/breeder Jed Cohen, along with sons Tim and Mark, once again led all owners by races won at the recently concluded Santa Anita Autumn Meet, as their Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, LLC tallied five wins, four seconds and three thirds over the course of the 18-day stand which ended on Sunday.

Longtime breeders in California, the Cohen's are now focused on recruiting racing prospects in Europe and throughout North America and they currently have horses in training with Mark Glatt and Jeff Mullins at Santa Anita.

Their stable star at the moment is the long-striding Packs a Wahlop, who was a dazzling 2 ¾ length winner of the Grade 3, $200,000 Zuma Beach Stakes on Oct. 9, getting one mile on turf in 1:34.07. Trained by Mullins and ridden by Mike Smith, Packs a Wahlop, who also took the Del Mar Juvenile Turf at one mile on Sept. 11, was most recently eighth in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland Nov. 4 and is now back at Santa Anita.

Purchased for $270,000 this past April at the Ocala Breeders' Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training, Packs a Wahlop, a grey colt by Creative Cause out of the City Zip mare City by the Bay, has three wins from five starts and earnings of $240,000.

Proud owners of Rancho Temescal, a sprawling 6,000-acre farm with huge natural grass paddocks fed by creeks and waterways in Ventura County, the Cohens' Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal were also leading owners with 22 wins at Santa Anita's 76-day Winter/Spring Meeting, which concluded on June 19.

A California-based owner dating back to 1960, Jed Cohen, along with his sons Tim and Mark, can now look to a racing future that has perhaps never looked brighter.

Ramon Vazquez Wins First Santa Anita Riding Title; Peter Miller Tops Among Trainers

Jockey Ramon Vazquez, a 38-year-old native of Puerto Rico, cemented his status as Santa Anita's Autumn Meet leading rider by winning two races early on Sunday's 10-race program and finished with 25 victories through the 18-day stand, five better than runner-up Juan Hernandez.

Recently arrived this past March, Vazquez, who had been a mainstay at tracks such as Prairie Meadows in Iowa and Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., took his first-ever Santa Anita title on Santa Anita's Autumn Meet closing day.

Miller, a 56-year-old native Angelino who bases primarily out of San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, collected his fourth Autumn Meet title and his sixth overall Santa Anita training crown.

“I'm grateful to be here and to the owners and trainers who have supported me,” said Vazquez.  “I'm blessed, this is big for me because not everybody who comes to ride at Santa Anita has made it (leading jockey) in such a short time.  I'm so blessed and I thank everybody who has supported me.”

Vazquez, who is represented by agent Bill Castle, had four stakes wins, two back of Umberto Rispoli.

“We're very excited to win another title at Santa Anita,” said Miller.  “It's always a great accomplishment to win there.  It's a team effort.  The people in the barn did a great job all meet and really special thanks to my owners for being just the best, the most loyal group of owners a guy could ask for.

“Looking ahead, we'll have a small string at Oaklawn but our main focus will be at Santa Anita.”

Live racing will return to The Great Race Place with opening day for the 2022-'23 Winter Spring Meet on Monday, Dec. 26.  For additional information, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

Stewart Elliott Triples For Second Night In A Row At Remington Park

For the second consecutive night, veteran rider Stewart Elliott won three races at Remington Park as he quietly tries to close the gap between himself and leading jockey Cristian Torres.

On Oct. 29, Torres stretched his lead over Elliott to 17 more wins at 51-34. Since then, Elliott celebrated a triple bagger for the second night in a row on Friday night at Remington Park as Torres was in Lexington, Ky., preparing for his mount aboard Flash of Mischief in Saturday's Grade 1 $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint. After his second night with three wins, Elliott had moved back within 12 of Torres at 52-40 in trips to the winner's circle this meet.

On Thursday night, Elliott won aboard Lady Ave (1-2 odds) for trainer Steve Asmussen in the third race on the card, for Mindy Willis in the fifth race in the irons of Whiskey Not Wine (9-5) and then with Serendipity Coco (5-2) for Kenny Nolen. Elliott inherited the third win Thursday in the eighth race from David Cabrera after Remington Park's four-time defending champion jockey was involved in an accident and had to take off all his mounts. It was the seventh win in a row for Lady Ave at Remington Park as she moved her career record over the Oklahoma City oval to nine starts, seven wins.

Friday night, it was the same song, different verse. Elliott booted home three more winners, taking the fifth aboard Miss Caney (6-1) for trainer Jesse Oberlander, and in the sixth on Missiszippy Bling (5-1) for Sarah Davidson and completing the riding triple for trainer Michael Biehler as he got the leg up on Cupids Love (3-1) in the seventh race.

The top five jockeys after the 42nd night of live racing at Remington Park were Torres (52), Elliott (40), Gerardo Mora (28), Weston Hamilton (27) and Cabrera (24). The top five trainers going into racing for Saturday, Nov. 5 are Karl Broberg (33), followed by Asmussen (22), Kari Craddock (16), J.R. Caldwell and Scott Young tied for fifth with 14 each.

In the owner's standings, End Zone Athletics (Broberg) of Mansfield, Texas, extended the lead with one win on Friday with Ace Gilford (7-2) in the second race. End Zone Athletics is in front with 23 wins followed by Danny Caldwell (16), Bryan Hawk (11), C.R. Trout (9) and L and G Racing Stables (Silvia Castillo, 6).

Live racing at Remington Park continues Saturday with a nine-race card. First post is 7:07 p.m.
