Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Beren Tops State Incentive Earners In 2021

With a campaign that saw him not afraid to travel or test deep waters, multiple stakes winner Beren finished last year as the leading earner of Pennsylvania incentive awards for his connections.

The now-4-year-old son of Weigelia generated a combined $288,815 in Pennsylvania-bred stakes purses, breeder awards, stallion awards, and owner bonuses, beating out 2020's leading incentive earner Wait For It, who finished second with $288,815.

Running as a homebred for Susan Quick's St. Omer's Farm and Christopher J. Feifarek, Beren won seven of 12 starts in 2021, and earned $483,970 on the racetrack. A portion of those earnings came from his efforts in Pennsylvania-bred stakes races, where he picked up $118,200 last year.

Beren made his first Pennsylvania stakes start in the summer after spending the spring in New York. He won both of his stakes races restricted to Pennsylvania-breds, both against 3-year-old rivals, handling the Crowd Pleaser Stakes at Parx Racing by 9 1/2 lengths, and later winning the Danzig Stakes at Penn National by two lengths.

The colt also generated six figures in breeder awards in 2021, bringing in $119,276 to Quick and Feifarek.

As a runner bred and sired in Pennsylvania, Beren was eligible for a 50 percent bonus on the purse for a maiden race run in the state, which he ticked off in his second start of the season, a 6 1/4-length drubbing of a Parx maiden special weight field. He then qualified for a 40 percent breeder bonus for in-state races, which included the two aforementioned state-bred stakes victories, along with a 6 1/2-length wire-to-wire route against open 3-year-old foes in the Parx Summer Sprint Stakes.

Quick and Feifarek also picked up $22,640 in owner bonuses with Beren. The colt qualified for multiple levels of this incentive, which includes a 40 percent purse bonus for races at Parx and a 20 percent boost at Penn National, both paid by the tracks.

Finally, Beren accounted for $28,669 in stallion awards for Wyn Oaks Farm, owner of sire Weigelia. Pennsylvania stallion owners receive a 10 percent bonus of the purse share for a registered Pennsylvania-bred and -sired horse that finishes first, second, or third at one of the state's tracks.

Weigelia was Pennsylvania's second-leading sire by stallion awards in 2021, with $149,591. He was bested only by the late perennial leading sire Jump Start, who generated $206,579 in stallion awards last year.

After leading Pennsylvania's incentive earners with $191,540 in 2020, Wait For It generated even more incentive money in 2021, combining for $263,217.

The bulk of that money came from Pennsylvania stakes earnings, earning $157,380 from four stakes races. He notched victories in the Page McKenney Handicap at Parx and the Hard Spun Stakes at Presque Isle Downs, a second in the Alphabet Soup Stakes at Parx, and he ran fifth in the Storm Cat Stakes at the same track.

Wait For It, a 7-year-old son of Uptowncharlybrown, was bred in Pennsylvania by Fantasy Lane Stable. In addition to his stakes earnings, he also generated $81,790 in breeder awards, $20,447 in stallion awards, and $3,600 in owner bonuses.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Blackstone Farm Leads Keystone State’s Breeders In 2021

The proverbial “mailbox money” of breeder's awards might seem like the easiest check to earn in the Thoroughbred industry, but the reality is those awards are the fruits of incredible time and effort on the part of the people bringing up the horses.

Still, if the time and effort is going to be put in, it's nice to have it pay off, and Pennsylvania's lucrative incentive programs for breeders ensure a good breeder is rewarded for supplying a good horse.

In 2021, the breeding operation that saw the greatest rewards for the horses it raised, in terms of Pennsylvania breeder's awards, was Blackstone Farm in Pine Grove, Pa., which brought in $277,161.

It marked the third consecutive year that Blackstone Farm topped the state's standings by breeder awards.

Through Pennsylvania's incentive program, breeders can earn a 50 percent bonus on the purse for horses bred and sired in-state that run in any maiden race. Pennsylvania-breds sired elsewhere are eligible for a 25 percent bonus.

In all other races, horses bred and sired in Pennsylvania can earn a 40 percent bonus on the purse for breeders, while those sired out of state earn a 20 percent bonus.

Leading the way for the Blackstone-bred runners in 2021 was Dance Code, an Honor Code colt who generated $27,156 in breeder's awards during his 2-year-old season.

Dance Code won on debut at Parx Racing by a neck over For the Dreamers on June 28. He then shipped to Saratoga for the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes on July 17, where he finished third. After running ninth in the G2 Saratoga Special Stakes, Dance Code returned to his home state to finish out his season.

The colt found a second wind once back in the friendly confines of Parx, winning a comeback allowance optional claiming race by a front-running 1 3/4 lengths on Nov. 10.

Dance Code returned to stakes company in December, finishing fourth in the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes on Dec. 7, then ending his season on a high note in the Parx Juvenile Stakes on Dec. 29, where he once again took to the front and drew off to win the seven-furlong race by 1 1/2 lengths.

Dance Code is out of the winning Street Boss mare Dancinginthestreet. He sold for $13,000 from the South Point Sales consignment at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, then owner Richie's World Stable paid $50,000 for him out of the Coastal Equine consignment at the 2021 OBS March 2-year-olds in training sale.

Other highlights of Blackstone Farm's breeding program in 2021 included You Look Cold, a Frosted filly who earned her breeder $11,760 in bonuses last year.

Her 2-year-old season featured a debut win in a Monmouth Park maiden special weight on Aug. 7. Two starts later, she traveled home to Presque Isle Downs, where she scored a driving win in the Finest City Stakes on Sept. 13.

You Look Cold is out of the unraced Lookin at Lucky mare Lucky Draw.

Nice Ace, a Noble Mission gelding, made $14,944 in breeder's awards last year on a campaign that featured three victories and a pair of runner-up efforts in allowance or optional claiming races at Presque Isle Downs. He is out of the unraced First Samurai mare A Lady With An Ace.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Li’lbito’charm Earned A Lot Without A Stakes Start

The conventional road to a big check in Pennsylvania's lucrative incentive program involves entering and winning state-bred stakes races, but there are plenty of horses that have brought in serious money without ever entering the gate in a stakes contest.

There is no better example of this than Li'lbito'charm, who earned her connections $144,546 in 2021 through the end of October racing exclusively below the stakes level. That placed her 11th among Pennsylvania incentive earners through October, and all ten of the horses in front of her reached their spots in part with stakes earnings.

The daughter of Smarty Jones had a career season in 2021, winning six of 15 starts and finishing in the money in five additional starts, all coming at Parx Racing.

That steady campaign of wins and placings meant Li'lbito'charm generated incentive earnings in nearly all of her starts last year.

That included $67,041 for breeder Nick Polydoros. As a Pennsylvania-bred and -sired horse, Li'lbito'charm was eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus for races run in her home state.

Li'lbito'charm is out of the Polydoros-bred stakes-placed Dixieland Heat mare Li'lbito'sunshine, whose seven foals to race are all winners. She is a half-sister to stakes winner Sunshine Included and stakes-placed Sunshine's Son Bob.

Li'lbito'charm changed hands through the claim box three times in 2021, landing most recently with owner Ylliehus 5 Star and trainer Ralph Riviezzo.

The mare's multiple owners divided an owner bonus of $30,744 through the end of October, which was the third-biggest payout in that column at that point of the year. For races at Parx, Pennsylvania-breds are eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus, meaning the mare's frequent wins and top-three finishes saw a significant boost because of where she was born.

Finally, Li'lbito'charm raised $16,760 in stallion awards for Patricia Chapman, the owner of sire Smarty Jones. Registered Pennsylvania-breds by Pennsylvania sires generate a 10 percent bonus on purse earnings for top-three finishes run within the Keystone State.

Smarty Jones, the fan-favorite dual classic winner, will stand the 2022 season at Equistar Training and Breeding in Annville, Pa. He generated $43,774 in stallion awards last year through the end of October, ranking him seventh in that category.
