By My Standards Exits Whitney In Good Order, May Target Gold Cup Next

Trainer Bret Calhoun said he experienced “the highs and lows of racing in a matter of ten minutes” after seeing Mr. Wireless capture a second graded stakes triumph in the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Racetrack in New Cumberland, W. Va., before saddling By My Standards to a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Second in last year's Whitney to Improbable, Allied Racing and Spendthrift Farm's By My Standards stumbled and lost a front left shoe a few strides leaving the gate. Unable to catch pacesetter and winner Knicks Go, By My Standards trailed throughout finishing 15 ½ lengths off the winner.

Calhoun said By My Standards, a 5-year-old son of Goldencents, emerged from the race in good order.

“For what he went through, he came back pretty well, better than expected,” Calhoun said. “He stumbled twice and wasn't going to do too well without a shoe. The foot is a little sore and we got lucky it didn't tear anything up. He's just a little bruised up is all.”

A four-time graded stakes-winning millionaire, By My Standards arrived at the Whitney off a runner-up effort despite a troubled trip in the Grade 1 Hill 'N' Dale Metropolitan Handicap on June 5 at Belmont Park.

Calhoun said By My Standards could target the $1 million Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on September 4 at Saratoga.

“The Whitney was a race we had dialed in for quite some time,” Calhoun said. “Obviously, you don't know what to take from that race other than just drawing a line through it. We'll figure out where we go. I wouldn't think the Jockey Club is impossible. Knicks Go ran them off their feet, went fast early, and he kept on running. He just ran that race he ran in the Breeders' Cup.”

Mr. Wireless notched a second graded stakes triumph in the West Virginia Derby after winning the Grade 3 Indiana Derby on July 7 at Indiana Grand Race Course in Shelbyville, Ind.

Calhoun said the JIL Stable-owned son of Dialed In could return in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby on September 25 at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Pa.

McGaughey: Iselin Likely For Comebacking Code Of Honor; First Captain Eyes Pennsylvania Derby

Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey reported that Will Farish's homebred Code of Honor is readying for his next start and said he was buoyed by the 5-year-old's bullet breeze for five furlongs in 1:01.40 Wednesday on the Oklahoma dirt training track in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

McGaughey said Code of Honor, the 2019 Grade 1 Runhappy Travers-winner, is likely to return to action in the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin on Aug. 21 at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

“He is probably going to run in the Iselin. He has trained very, very well up here. He had a great work yesterday,” said McGaughey, who brought the son of Noble Mission to Saratoga from his Fair Hill Training Center barn at the start of the meet. “I'm looking forward to getting him back.”

Code of Honor, the 2019 Kentucky Derby runner-up, has made one 2021 start, finishing fifth in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 23.

McGaughey said First Captain, the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes winner who disappointed with a third-place finish as the short-priced favorite in the Curlinon July 30, will likely not start in the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers on Aug. 28.

“We're probably not planning on running in the Travers but if something happens where the race were to fall apart, we're going to be ready. It probably will be more likely that the Pennsylvania Derby [on Sept. 25 at Parx] is where we're going with him,” McGaughey said.

Pacific Classic, Haskell Among Options for Hot Rod Charlie

Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), runner-up to favored Essential Quality (Tapit) in last Saturday's GI Belmont S., returned to the track at his Santa Anita base Friday. The colt arrived from the East Coast Wednesday night.

“He jogged a mile and a half and looked fantastic,” trainer Doug O'Neill said. “He was happy and full of energy.”

Regarding the GII Louisiana Derby winner's next possible engagement, O'Neill said, “The [GI] Pacific Classic at Del Mar is a possibility [Aug. 21], the [GI] Haskell at Monmouth is possible [July 17] as is the [GI] Pennsylvania Derby [Sept. 25]. There are tons of possibilities and options.”

He added, “Deciding on his next race is a group effort. No one wants to say much right now..it's the old cliche, 'We'll see where 'Charlie' takes us,' and we really can't know that until we see how he is on the track, eating, and all that stuff, so in a couple weeks we'll have a better idea.”

Pennsylvania Derby, Cotillion Return To Parx’s Lasix-Free Stakes Schedule In 2021

After being forced to cancel the majority of its 2020 stakes schedule due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Parx Racing has released its' 2021 stakes schedule featuring over $5 million in purses. The marque event is the return of the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby and Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes. Both one-million dollar races will be run on Saturday, September 25 along with seven other stakes including The Gallant Bob (G2), Turf Monster (G3), Dr. James Penny Memorial (G3), and the Greenwood Cup (G3).

“Others tracks have had a lot of success both from a wagering stand point and being able to create a buzz running several of their major races on the same card,” explained David Osojnak, Director of Racing for Parx. “The goal is to continue to expand the PA Derby/Cotillion card into one of the premier days in the fall racing schedule.”

Tuesday, Aug. 24 will be the inaugural PA Derby/Cotillion Preview Day, featuring the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes and the Cathryn Sophia Stakes as well as the always exciting Parx Dash (G3). As an added incentive Parx will be awarding a $50,000 bonus to both the owner and trainer of any horse which wins both the Smarty Jones and the PA Derby as well as a separate $50,000 bonus for connections that sweep both the Cathryn Sophia and the Cotillion.

“This added incentive is emblematic of PARX Racing's and the PTHA's commitment to Pennsylvania's horseracing industry and community,” Osojnak said. “Several of our 2019 stakes participants went on to compete in the Breeders' Cup races in 2019 with Spun to Run (Smarty Jones S. winner, and Pa Derby participant) winning the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) for (Juan) Carlos Guerrero. With our stakes schedule Parx is an ideal place to condition and compete good up-and coming horses.”

Parx will host 12 Pa Bred Stakes in 2021 awarding $1.2 million dollars in purses highlighted by five Pennsylvania bred stake races on PA Day at the Races, Monday Aug. 23.

The stakes schedule rounds out with Owners Appreciation Day on Labor Day Sept. 6, Hall of Fame Day on Oct. 12, and the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes on Dec. 7.

RACE DAY LASIX IS PROHIBITED IN ALL GRADED STAKES.
