Local Route to Pegasus Goes Through Fort Lauderdale

Trainer Todd Pletcher will saddle a pair of runners in Saturday’s GII Fort Lauderdale S. at Gulfstream Park, the local prep for the Jan. 23 GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational. Harrell Ventures’ Halladay (War Front), winner of the Aug. 22 GI Fourstardave H. set the pace before fading to sixth in the Nov. 7 GI Breeders’ Cup Mile last time out. The 4-year-old is three-for-three over the Gulfstream lawn where he won the Tropical Park Derby last December and this year’s Sunshine Forever S. Stablemate Largent (Into Mischief) has won three of four starts over the Hallandale turf course and will be stepping up to the graded stakes ranks after a pair of 2020 stakes wins. He captured the July 29 Edward P Evans S. at Colonial Downs and the Oct. 9 Bert Allen S. at Laurel.

“This is going to be a tough race. This is a prep with some real teeth to it,” Pletcher said. “I think if either one of them were able to perform well in here it would certainly tell us that they belong in the Pegasus.”

Halladay will be making his first start beyond 1 1/16 miles in the nine-furlong Fort Lauderdale as connections look ahead to the 1 3/16-miles Pegasus next month.

“We’re interested in trying to stretch him out. We know that he’s fond of the Gulfstream course so we felt like this was sort of a good opportunity to see how he would handle a little more distance,” Pletcher said. “If this were to go really well it would put the Pegasus Turf in play, so that’s what we’re trying to find out.”

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Twin Creeks Racing Stables’ Largent will also be looking to stretch out beyond 1 1/16 miles fo the first time in the Fort Lauderdale.

“He’s super consistent, always shows up and runs well. He, too, has always liked Gulfstream. He’s definitely one that is capable on the day,” Pletcher said of Largent. “I think as he’s matured he’s settled a little better, as has Halladay, I think that gives them both the chance of handling the added distance.”

Trainer Mike Maker, who won last year’s Pegasus with Zulu Alpha (Street Cry {Ire}), also has two entered in the Fort Lauderdale. Three Diamonds Farm’s Tide of the Sea (English Channel), purchased for $80,000 at last year’s Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, will be making his stakes debut Saturday. The 4-year-old was a front-running winner of a 12-furlong allowance at Keeneland last time out Oct. 7. Skychai Racing and David Koenig’s Somelikeithotbrown (Big Brown), gate-to-wire winner of the July 26 GII Bernard Baruch H., is coming off a win over New York-bred foes in the Oct. 24 Mohawk S. at Belmont Park.

“We’re going to give both of them a shot,” Maker said. “It would be great to get back to the Pegasus.”

Pegasus World Cup Series Returns for 2021

The Pegasus World Cup Championship Invitational Series is returning to Gulfstream Park on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Launched in 2017 as part of 1/ST’s mission to modernize the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing, the Pegasus World Cup has evolved into a Championship Invitational Series featuring two Grade I stakes races with a combined $4 million in purses.

The GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational, run on the dirt at 1 1/8 miles, offers a $3-million total purse. The GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational, run on the turf at 1 3/16 miles, offers a $1-million purse. 1/ST entirely provides the $4-million total purse contribution.

This year’s event will provide opportunities in North American Thoroughbred racing for horse owners by showcasing their equine athletes competing free of medications on race day while providing the winner of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational with an automatic entry into the 2021 $20-million Saudi Cup.

The medication-free format, for both the Pegasus World Cup Invitational and Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational, is consistent with the International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities (IFHA) standards and reflects the commitment that 1/ST, along with other major racing organizations and associations, made in April 2019 to eliminate Lasix in all graded stakes races in 2021.

The 2021 Pegasus World Cup will implement strict social distancing protocols and new health and safety guidelines for riders and spectators. On-premise, attendance for this year’s event has been reduced to 20% to allow all guests to socially distance accordingly.

NBC Sports returns as the official broadcast partner of the 2021 Pegasus World Cup and will broadcast the race day excitement live from 4:30 pm-6:00 pm ET.

Classic: ‘Disappointed,’ ‘Shocked’ Knowlton Sets Pegasus As Early-Season Goal For Tiz The Law

Sackatoga Stable's 3-year-old Constitution colt Tiz the Law, a well-beaten sixth in Saturday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., was fine Sunday morning trainer Barclay Tagg said.

Sent off as the 3-1 favorite from post two, Tiz the Law was stuck on the inside under jockey Manny Franco and never mounted a serious challenge to Authentic, who had beaten him by 1 ¼ lengths in the Kentucky Derby.

“(Franco) said he was rank on him,” Tagg said, before leaving for Florida early Sunday morning. “The winner was rank and he should have just followed him around. I had him ready to run, but I can't ride for them.”

Tiz the Law's connections had recognized that having to start close to the rail might present a problem for the New York-bred. The Classic was the worst performance of Tiz the Law's career and the first time he did not finish in the top three.

“Obviously, we were disappointed and kind of shocked that he didn't end up better than he did,” Sackatoga's operating manager Jack Knowlton said. “An inside trip was a concern. There were a lot of people when they saw the draw automatically said, 'that's a problem for this horse.' When you are in the two-hole it's awful hard to put yourself in a place where you can get outside of horses. Maybe that's the story. I don't think being on the rail was the ideal place.

“You're not going to get what you want every time if they are in enough races. I guess it was our turn to not get the good trip. We won three Grade 1s and were second in the biggest race for 3-year-olds and he had the trip every time.”

Knowlton said Tiz the Law will be shipped to Tagg's barn at the Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida on Wednesday. The goal is to have him ready for the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) on Jan. 23 at Gulfstream Park.
