Breizh Sky Comes Good In The Paul De Moussac

Finally getting his ideal conditions and ride, TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) had his head back in front in Sunday's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac at ParisLongchamp. Dogged mainly by ill fortune since his success in Deauville's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure in July, the Alain Jathiere colour-bearer was reverting to seven furlongs following his creditable third in this venue's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains last month. Allowed to stride to the front from his disadvantageous wide draw by Maxime Guyon, the Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti-trained 5-1 shot kept finding to ward off his G3 Prix Djebel conqueror Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths.

Breizh Sky, who had gained his TDN Rising Star tag with an eight-length debut win over six furlongs at Saint-Cloud before following up in the Roland de Chambure, had looked on form to have levelled off when going down narrowly in the G3 Prix la Rochette and when third in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere over this course and distance. Again missing out in the Djebel on his return also at this distance at Deauville in April, the feeling persisted that he was being continually found out by the lack of a strong pace to run at under hold-up tactics.

This reversion to front-running seemed to unlock his latent talent and Alessandro Botti is hoping he can use it as a stepping stone back to the big time. “He is such a good and brave horse and really deserved to win this,” he said. “After his good performance in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, my first idea was to go straight to the [G1] Prix Jean Prat but he was doing so well that I was tempted by this. We will go to the Jean Prat now and enjoy this victory.”

Pedigree Notes

Breizh Sky is out of Anna Danse (Fr) (Anabaa), a granddaughter of Danse Bretonne (Fr) (Exit To Nowhere)  who was responsible for the G3 Prix Gladiateur winner and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Varevees (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and was the second dam of last year's G1 Preis der Diana heroine Toskana Belle (Fr) (Shamalgan {Fr}). Danse Bretonne is kin to the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc and G3 Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord winner and GI Man O'War S. runner-up and sire Kaldounevees (Fr). Anna Danse's unraced 2-year-old filly by Birchwood (Ire) is named Breizhy Girl (Fr), while she also has a yearling filly by Attendu (Fr) named Breizh Danse (Fr).

Breizh Sky Targetting Arc Weekend Following Deauville Triumph

Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti trainee Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great–Anna Danse {Fr}, by Anabaa) announced his arrival with a breathtaking 'TDN Rising Star' display, winning by 5 1/2 lengths, contesting a six-furlong newcomers' heat at Saint-Cloud in his May 17 debut last time and lined up in the colours of Alain Jathiere for this black-type debut. Swiftly into stride and leading throughout this one-turn test, he was stoked up in early straight and, despite racing greenly and rolling around on the front, fended off all challenges under urging inside the final quarter mile to narrowly hold the late thrust of Terrestrial (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) for a career high.

“I was extremely concerned by the way he was hanging left so badly and it seemed impossible for Christophe [Soumillon] to keep him on a straight line,” explained Alessandro Botti after stewards allowed the result to stand. “We will have an inquest at home and see what's to be done to rectify that tendency. I feel that the stewards made the right decision and we are, of course, delighted with the win. He had shown great quality on debut we had already decided, beforehand, that we would not to run him again this summer and wait for the autumn. He will go to a race like the [G3] Prix La Rochette as a prep for the [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere.”

Breizh Sky is the latest of six foals and one of four scorers from as many runners produced by a daughter of Danse Quatz (Fr) (Johann Quatz {Fr}), herself a multiple-winning half-sister to G3 Prix Gladiateur victor and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Varevees (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}). Danse Quatz is a daughter of Danse Bretonne (Fr) (Exit To Nowhere), herself the second dam of Listed Prix Maurice Caillault victor Speedo Boy (Fr) (Vision d'Etat {Fr}) and this year's Listed Henkel Stutenpreis victrix Toskana Belle (Fr) (Shamalgan {Fr}). Danse Bretonne is kin to G3 Prix Edmond Blanc and G3 Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord victor and G1 Man O' War S. runner-up and Kaldounevees (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}).

Pedro the Great Colt Shoots To TDN Rising Stardom

Haras de la Haie Neuve's deceased sire Pedro the Great was the unlikely source of a new TDN Rising Star on Tuesday after his son Breizh Sky (Fr) registered an eight-length win at Saint-Cloud. Sadly lost to the breeding world at just nine, the G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire had begun to excel from small numbers before his untimely demise and it could be that this year's crop serves as a statement of what might have been. Sent off at 15-2 for the six-furlong Prix Hunyade for unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings, Breizh Sky who races for Louis Baudron and his trainers Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti was quickly at the head of affairs with Simon Planque unable to contain his enthusiasm. Helped by the turning track, the bay who was unsold at €14,000 at the last year's Arqana Deauville v2 Yearling Sale settled before the home straight and opened up from there to register a penultimate split of 11.31 and inflict the heavy defeat on Purple Rain (Fr) (Harry Angel {Ire}), with Clifton Down (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) two lengths further away in third.

As his name suggests, Breizh Sky descends from Danse Bretonne (Fr) (Exit To Nowhere) who was a half-sister to the dual group 3-winning sire Kaldounevees (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}) who was also runner-up in the GI Man o' War S. and G1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen. Her staying daughter Varevees (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}) was successful in the G3 Prix Gladiateur and second in the G1 Prix du Cadran, while she is also the second dam of the Listed Prix Maurice Caillault winner Speedo Boy (Fr) (Vision d'Etat {Fr}), Saturday's German listed scorer Toskana Belle (Fr) (Shamalgan {Fr}) and the dual listed-placed Frohsim (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}).

Al Wukair Filly Tops Arqana Yearlings

The first of four sessions of the Arqana Autumn Yearling Sale took place on Saturday with a day dedicated to flat-bred yearlings. After scratches, 214 youngsters went under the hammer, with 156 finding new homes for a clearance rate of 72.9%. A total of €1,092,000 was accrued, at an average price of €7,000 and a median of €5,000. Last year’s yearling session, which took place at the end of the sale, saw 147 yearlings sold (83.5%) for an average of €8,044 and a median of €6,500.

Sebastian Desmontils’s Chauvigny Global Equine signed for three of the top five lots on Saturday on behalf of various trainers. Leading the way was Quesnay’s Al Wukair (Ire) half-sister to the listed-placed Tres Forte (Fr) (Whipper) (lot 233), who fetched €57,000 with Desmontils acting on behalf of trainer George Baker. This is the first crop of yearlings for Al Wukair.

Desmontils was working on behalf of trainer Henri Devin when he went to €26,000 for lot 175, a filly by Doctor Dino (Fr), and for Mathieu Brasme when he signed for lot 9, a colt by Pedro The Great, for €21,000.

The top-priced colt of the session was Haras des Pierres Follets’s Pedro The Great colt from the family of American champion mare Questing (lot 240), who was bought by Joel Boisnard for €22,000.

After a break in the action on Sunday, the Arqana Autumn Sale continues on Monday and runs through Wednesday. It is followed by the Arqana National Hunt Breeding Stock Sale on Thursday.
