Jockeys and Jeans to Live Stream ‘Mattress Mack’ Speech Saturday

The ninth annual Jockeys and Jeans fundraiser for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) will feature a live streamed speech from Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, the Jockeys and Jeans Person of the Year. The speech will be broadcast from Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas this coming Saturday, June 24, at 8:30 p.m. PT/11:30 p.m. ET on the Jockeys and Jeans Facebook page.

“Mattress Mack has always advocated for the safety of riders and horses and is one of very few who understands horse racing from the perspective of an owner, breeder, and bettor,” said Jockeys and Jeans President Barry Pearl. “We believe he will be frank and also helpful in his assessment of the current state of Thoroughbred racing.”

With over 320 tickets already sold, a limited number of seats are still available by calling 855-234-7469 or purchasing online at ticketmaster.com. Single tickets are $125; VIP tickets are $250; and nine-person tables are $1,800 and include being seated with a Hall of Fame Jockey. All proceeds go to the PDJF.

TIF Hosting Derby Prop Contest For Racing Charities

With 20 questions and a tiebreaker facing contest participants, entries are now open for the 2023 Thoroughbred Idea Foundation Derby Prop Contest, the organization said in a release Wednesday.

The entry portal closes at 11:00 a.m. E.T. this Saturday, May 6. Players should keep track of their answers as you will not be able to revisit the survey portal once you submit your entry. Should a horse named directly in a prop be scratched, all answers to that prop may be counted as correct.

Winners will be notified by email late on Saturday evening to identify how to direct charitable donations. The top finishers will get to direct $20,000 in donations to four racing charities, which are: Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs, New Vocations, Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and Second Stride. PDJF Telethon Raises Over $300,000

The fifth annual PDJF Telethon, presented by Lane's End Farm, raised over $300,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund Apr. 23. Since the inaugural telethon in 2018, over $1.5 million has been raised to support jockeys who have suffered serious on-track injuries.

“When everyone in the sport comes together, good things can happen,” said Kevin Grigsby, FanDuel TV executive producer. “We are grateful to our industry partners at Keeneland, Santa Anita and NYRA for their collaborative efforts to make this event a success. We are proud of all that we have raised so far but know the work is not done–we are already looking ahead to next year's telethon.”

“Being a part of this event is a great honor,” said Mike Joyce, a board member of the PDJF and on-air host at FanDuel TV. “I want to personally thank every single person who took time to donate to this worthwhile cause. No matter how large or small a donation, each one is so important.”

There were donations from supporters across the country including major donations from Jim McIngvale, Lee Einsidler, Vince Foglia and Lane's End Farm. In addition, FanDuel matched all donations up to $100,000.

“We are grateful to everyone who has been supportive of the annual telethon that has made it a success for the PDJF,” said Nancy LaSala, PDJF Board President. “It also allows the jockeys from the past and present to connect with the racing fans in a very personal way. This would not be possible without the platform provided by FanDuel TV who from the beginning supported this concept.”

5th Annual PDJF Telethon Scheduled Apr. 23

Hall of Fame riders Sandy Hawley, Chris McCarron, Mike Smith and John Velazquez, among many others, will team with FanDuel TV, the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), Keeneland and Santa Anita on Sunday, Apr. 23rd for the fifth annual telethon to raise money for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), presented by Lane's End.

The event will be broadcast on both FanDuel TV and America's Day at the Races in collaboration with NYRA and FOX Sports as well as livestreamed. Fans can participate by calling 1-844-884-7353 between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET or can click here to donate directly. Callers who give via the telethon will be entered in a drawing to win assorted autographed memorabilia, which will take place each hour.

“We are proud of the way this event has grown each year and that is largely due to the collaborative efforts from the Guild and our partners at Santa Anita, Keeneland, NYRA and FOX Sports,” said FanDuel's Mike Joyce who also serves on the Board of Directors of the PDJF. “Every single day, jockeys assume incredible risk. This event raises important funding and showcases the work that the PDJF does to support these athletes.”

The 2022 edition raised $418,300 to support jockeys who have suffered serious on-track injuries, which was added to $1.2 million in support of the PDJF since the inaugural telethon in 2018.
