Jack Darcy Outwits Rivals For Grand Prix de Deauville Success

Paul and Oliver Cole trainee Jack Darcy (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Pretty Face {GB}, by Rainbow Quest) seized immediate control of Sunday's G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville and was never headed in the 12 1/2-furlong feature to complete an afternoon pattern-race treble for the British raiding party.

On the front end from flagfall and leading his rivals in single file, the 54-5 outsider-of-five was scrubbed along off the home turn and kept finding under continued rousting in the straight to hold Al Nayyir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths for a career best.

Jack Darcy's route to this stakes breakthrough included seven prior attempts at black-type level, adding to a runner-up finish in last term's Listed Prix Nureyev at this Normandy venue with a second in this month's G3 Glorious S. at Goodwood. He lined up for this returning off a sixth-of-seven effort in last week's G3 Geoffrey Freer S. at Newbury. The Cole yard has now annexed six editions of the contest, the run being initiated by MG1SW sire Ibn Bey (GB) (Mill Reef) in 1988.

“We expected a race devoid of pace, we'd talked about it at length with his entourage and the plan was to set a false pace from the front,” explained winning rider Cristian Demuro. “He has a lot of raw talent, so we decided to kick for home early and make it as dificult as possible for the opposition. The trip was something of a question mark and, in a race without too much pace, his stamina was less of a problem. He proved to be very tough, as British horses often are.”

Part-owner Edward Gascoigne added, “Jack Darcy likes to lead and Cristian [Demuro] rode him perfectly. We looked at the entries and the race seemed like a good opportunity. Ollie [Cole] said he was really well and in good form after Newbury, which is why we decided to run and Junko's withdrawal certainly helped. He's tough, but he also has speed. Distance-wise, he's very adept if the pace is right and, if the pace isn't too strong, he can stretch out as he did today. He was in complete control, it's a fantastic victory and we're very happy.”

Marquand Stars Again On Nathaniel’s Sumo Sam In The Lillie Langtry

Saturday was all about “Mr Goodwood” as Tom Marquand again led his weighing room comrades a merry dance on the G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. shock winner Sumo Sam (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

As he had on Tuesday's brilliant G1 Goodwood Cup hero Quickthorn (GB) by the same sire, the meeting's leading rider made all on Ben and Sir Martyn Arbib's homebred 3-year-old on ground turned heavy by ever-worsening conditions. Far from caving in with two furlongs remaining, the Paul and Oliver Cole-trained 25-1 shot whose previous best was a third in Newmarket's Listed Pretty Polly S. continued to pile it on. At the end of the mile-and-three-quarter feature, she had won with relish by 8 1/2 lengths from River Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in an exhibition of power in testing ground.

Oliver Cole said of the winner, who had also been third behind Al Asifah (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Listed Agnes Keyser Fillies' S. here in June, was rewarding the efforts of the Whatcombe team having become renowned as a slow-starter. “Sumo Sam has always been a very good filly,” Oliver Cole said. “We have done a lot of stalls work with her since her last run. In her last two races, she has been left and that hasn't been helpful. Full credit to the team at home and thanks very much to the guys at the stalls who are the unsung heroes. Also to the boys who have ridden her in the stalls at home, because I know I wouldn't ride her.”

Ralph Beckett, who was winning his first Qatar Goodwood Festival training title, said of River Of Stars, “She stumbled coming out of the stalls, but I'm not sure it made any difference as she was always scrambling on that ground. She has a German dam side to her pedigree, but I have always felt that she is a good, fast-ground filly. I would say the [G2] Park Hill [at Doncaster] next, or something like that. She didn't run very well in it last year but she is a hardier, more finished article this time.”

Royal Scotsman Enters Winters Quarters, Will Go Directly To The Guineas

Mrs. Fitri Hay's Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), fresh off a narrow second in the G1 Dewhurst S., will now head to winter quarters. His next intended start is the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. A second up winner at Goodwood on May 20, the colt was third in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot before taking the G2 Richmond S. back at Goodwood. Prior to his Dewhurst second he was fifth in the G2 Gimcrack S. at York.

Oliver Cole, who trains with his father Paul, said, “After York, he came back and wasn't quite right. He was a bit ill. We are very happy with him now. He is one of the best horses we have ever had and he is a very genuine, tough horse and we are very lucky to have him.

“He is amazing and goes on any ground, which is incredible. He has a lot of scope and is an exceptional racehorse. Hopefully he will show it next season.”

Scots Wha’ Hae: Flying Juveniles Have Sackville On A High

GOODWOOD, UK–Goodwood has been especially glorious this week for Ed Sackville, wearing two slightly different hats as bloodstock advisor and agent.

First, Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never) blazed a trail in the G3 Molecomb S. for the Keswick family's Rockcliffe Stud, in which Sackville has played an active role in helping to assemble a broodmare band. The filly's success was followed on Thursday by victory in the G2 Richmond S. for Dr Jim and Fitri Hay's Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who was bought by SackvilleDonald for 125,000gns at Book 2 of last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. 

“I have been lucky enough to be able to buy some horses for Dr Hay in the last couple of years and I am so pleased that his trust in me has been rewarded,” said the agent.

Trained by Paul and Oliver Cole, Royal Scotsman has now won two of his four starts and was third behind Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) and subsequent G2 July S. winner Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot. 

Sackville continued, “Royal Scotsman looks like a hugely exciting prospect. I know that Alex Cole and his father and brother were disappointed in the Coventry and obviously now he has shown his true colours. Also, when one looks at the form of the Coventry, it looks like it was an exceptional race.”

Paul Cole added of the colt, “Nothing worries him, he is a fantastic horse. There is the possibility of stepping up in trip, but he has a lot of speed and is out of a fast mare. I can't see anything around that has as much speed as him. There are very good races on the horizon such as the Morny and potentially York [the Gimcrack]. I'm not good at making quick decisions.”

While Cole mulls his options, trainer Richard Hannon will be doing similar in regard to Trillium, who is now a dual winner. 

“[Wednesday] was equally exciting,” said Sackville. “It was obviously different in that she is a homebred for the Keswick family, and to me it was a truly important homebred in that the family had Snow Lantern last year, and Snow Lantern is out of [1000 Guineas winner] Sky Lantern who was originally bought as a yearling, whereas this filly Trillium is a granddaughter of Asaawir. When the Keswicks decided to form Rockcliffe Stud Asaawir was one of the foundation mares we bought from three original mares, so to win the Molecomb with a second-generation Keswick-bred filly is arguably more significant for the stud than winning the Falmouth Stakes with Snow Lantern.”

The fourth foal of Asaawir (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) was the dual winner and Group 3-placed Marsh Hawk (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who has now produced two black-type horses for Rockliffe Stud in Trillium and the Listed runner-up Mohawk King (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). Her Iffraaj (GB) colt foal will be consigned as lot 113 by Highclere Stud to the forthcoming Goffs UK Premier Sale. 

“We still own Marsh Hawk, who is only a 10-year-old mare. She has an Iffraaj yearling going to Doncaster and a Wootton Bassett colt foal, and she is back in foal to the great No Nay Never,” Sackville noted. 

“Trillium is a very exciting prospect. I think now that she is a group winner anything else is a bonus. We will probably aim her high, be it the Morny or the Cheveley Park or the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.”

He added, “I think that the most important thing about these two horses is that they are owned by British-based owners who have put a huge amount into the business, and obviously we as an industry are hugely grateful for the international support that we get, but I think that it is nice to have some locally-owned, high-profile winners. 

“The Arqana, Doncaster and Fairyhouse catalogues are already out online and I think that winners like these are a great reflection of the strength and depth of the British and Irish breeding industries.”
