A Generational Shift at Keeneland January

In Italian, `generazio' means a generation, and so it's likely no coincidence that `generation' is the word to which Conrad Bandoroff continues to return when talking about the complete dispersal of Patricia Generazio's stock.

That dispersal, of which the first nine racing or broodmare prospects sell Monday at Keeneland, totals 43 entered at the Keeneland January sale sold under the Denali Stud banner.

Massachusetts natives, Generazio and her husband Frank got their racing start in New England, where Frank ran the family owned New England Sand and Gravel Company. He fell in love with Thoroughbred racing and was very involved in the sport for 50 years, serving as the president of the New England HBPA for almost a decade, and training his own horses for a time. In New England, the Generazios campaigned the graded stakes winner Concorde Bound. In later years, they moved their string to New York, New Jersey and Florida, racing horses with trainer Christophe Clement, among others. Trainer Mary Hartman campaigned their multiple Grade I winner Presious Passion, who ran over a remarkable eight seasons, earning over $2.5 million. They also campaigned graded stakes winners Disco Partner, Pure Sensation and Discreet Marq. Frank Generazio died in November, 2020, at the age of 91.

“Patricia and Frank have had tremendous success in the game,” said Bandoroff. “They enjoyed it thoroughly for many years, and there are generations of families that they've cultivated. But she has gotten to a point where I think the operation has grown to be almost overwhelming, and she felt that it was perhaps the right time to close it down. She had accumulated a lot of horses and I think from her perspective, it was the right time to kind of say, `okay, let's wrap this up.'”

Among those on offer Monday is the 5-year-old mare Mischievous Dream (Into Mischief), who sells as hip 98 as a racing or broodmare prospect. “She won the Sorority S. at Monmouth at two, and was stakes-placed at three,” said Bandoroff. “She won on debut for the Clements in Saratoga. She is just coming off her career-best Beyer in a race at the end of October up in New York and she's a big, pretty filly, very attractive, very clean-legged, and vets well. She's got a nice broodmare pedigree underneath her with her stakes performances, but has some run left if someone wanted to keep going with her.”

Denali will also offer Pure Bode (Bodemeister) on their behalf, a 6-year-old broodmare prospect who sells as hip 147.

“She has been very productive on the track,” said Bandoroff. “She is a hard-knocking filly who has won $180,000 and is a half to their multiple-graded stakes winner Pure Sensation (Zensational), from their broodmare Pure Disco. She comes from one of these multi-generational Generazio families. She really exemplifies what their program has been: these hard-knocking mares, really limited opportunities in terms of the stud fees and the stallions they've been bred to, but tremendous success getting the results on the racetrack and producing high-quality graded stakes horses.”

The genesis of the dispersal started with the idea of selling a few broodmares, but soon blossomed into the entire operation. “We have sold some horses that she had in training with the Clements and Christophe and Miguel have always been good friends of ours, and they're the ones who made the introduction,” Bandoroff said. “The dispersal started with three racing or broodmare prospects that the Clements had for Mrs .Generazio that we entered and then Mrs. Generazio said, `actually, you know, I think I want to sell everything.'”

In addition to Mischievous Dream and Pure Bode, more than 40 others will be offered over the course of the rest of the sale, and several more at Fasig-Tipton February.

Bandoroff said that dissolution of a life's work was a responsibility he didn't take lightly.

“It's something we take very seriously, because it encompassed a good portion of a lifetime, of cultivating these families,” he said. “Mrs. Generazio was very involved in mating the mares and she deserves a lot of credit for the success that the program has had. I think that it is certainly going to be hard for her over the next couple of days to watch some of these horses be sold, but that's the cycle of life, isn't it? But there are going to be plenty of opportunities from people who respect the program the Generazios put together over the years and recognize that they have done well.”

Generazio Dispersal Set for Keeneland January

A complete dispersal of horses owned by Patricia Generazio will be offered at the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale and will be consigned by Denali Stud. The sale is scheduled for Jan. 9-12.

Among the horses that will be sold are racing/broodmare prospects SW Mischievous Dream (Into Mischief), Pure Bode (Bodemeister), and Marquet Legacy (Gio Ponti), all from the families of some of the most popular graded winners developed by the Generazio operation. Among the horses campaigned by Generazio and her late husband, Frank, are GISWs Presious Passion (Royal Anthem) and Discreet Marq (Discreet Cat), as well as MGSWs Pure Sensation (Zensational) and Disco Partner (Disco Rico). The latter three were all homebreds. The Generazio operation has tallied over $32 million in earnings and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in the New York-bred program in 2020.

“We are grateful that Mrs. Generazio has entrusted us to handle this dispersal,” said Denali's Conrad Bandoroff. “For buyers, this is an incredibly exciting opportunity to tap into these black-type families that have never been offered at auction.”

Christophe Clement, who has trained for Generazio for the last decade, added: “The quality of their program is in the strength of their mares and their ability to produce high-caliber racehorses with limited opportunity in terms of the stallions that they were bred to. You can really see this with how many successful homebreds they have campaigned over the years. What they've accomplished is extraordinary.”

Maven Heads Lucky Coin Field On Friday Card At Saratoga

Richard Ravin's Group 3-winner winner Maven headlines Friday's $120,000 Lucky Coin at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Trained by Wesley Ward, Maven enters the Lucky Coin, a 5 1/2-furlong Mellon turf sprint for older horses who have not won a stakes this year, from an off-the-board effort in the Group 1 King's Stand on June 15 at Ascot.

The 4-year-old American Pharoah chestnut has been a boom-or-bust proposition with four wins and four off-the-board efforts from eight starts. As a 2-year-old, Maven graduated on debut on the main track at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.,  in April 2019 and two months later shipped to France and captured the Group 3 Prix du Bois traveling five furlongs on the Chantilly turf.

Last year, Maven won a turf allowance sprint at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., but finished off-the-board in the Mahony at Saratoga and the Grade 3 Franklin-Simpson at Kentucky Downs.

“He didn't really run too well at Saratoga, but he may have been on a bit of a downward spiral then,” Ward said. “We gelded him last year [in October] and at the time that we gelded him, it was getting to be the fall of the year and I didn't really want to take him down to Florida so we just gave him the extra time. He had no issues. He just ran a couple of poor races.”

Maven kicked off his 4-year-old campaign with an allowance score on the Keeneland turf in April that garnered a career-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure before shipping overseas and finishing 11th in the five-furlong King's Stand under Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez.

“We brought him back in the spring and he was a little short going into his first race. He really amazed me how he just exploded that day to the front like he does,” Ward said. “Turning for home, I was expecting him to stop and he just kind of re-broke, and he really wasn't ready. So, that's what inspired me to take him over to Royal Ascot at a distance that I thought would be just awesome for him, five-eighths, off the big numbers he got off his Keeneland run.

“It was good spacing and everything you want to see. I had my rider, Johnny, on him that won on him,” Ward continued. “He broke and kind of sprinted out there and when the running started, he just didn't have it. I'm not sure if this is a horse that is just a horse-for-course or if he can take his show on the road. That's a little bit of a question mark. That said, he's training really, really well right now.”

Velazquez will pilot Maven from the outermost post 8.

Marc Keller's Pulsate, a 5-year-old Speightstown chestnut trained by Robert Ribaudo, was a prominent second in last year's Lucky Coin, finishing 1 1/4-lengths back of Battle Station.

A strong second in his seasonal debut in a six-furlong optional-claiming turf sprint at Belmont on July 4, Pulsate faded to fourth last out sprinting 6 1/2-furlongs on the main track on August 6 at the Spa.

Manny Franco [post 4] will look to provide Pulsate his first win since December 2019.

Patricia Generazio's New York homebred Maxwell Esquire finished 2 1/4-lengths back of Pulsate last out on July 4.

Trainer Christophe Clement said the 4-year-old Discreet Cat colt has trained well enough to earn a fourth career stakes start and first since finishing fifth in the Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship in November.

“He's training well and doing well,” Clement said. “We were looking at other races but we'll see if he can face good horses and see what happens.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr. has picked up the mount from post 5.

[Story Continues Below]

Gatsas Stables' Backtohisroots will look to make amends after stumbling at the start last out on October 4 in the Grade 3 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational and unseating Jose Lezcano.

The 5-year-old son of Mark Valeski, a first-time gelding trained by John Terranova, boasts a record of 13-3-4-2 with purse earnings of $196,075, including a rallying score in an optional-claiming turf sprint in August 2020 at the Spa.

Backtohisroots will exit post 6 under Luis Saez.

Rounding out the field are Noble Emotion [post 3, Jose Ortiz] a four-time winner from 10 starts for trainer Horacio DePaz; Holiday Stone [post 7, Tyler Gaffalione], an eight-time winner with purse earnings of $532,159 for trainer George Weaver; The Connector [post 2, Willie Martinez], a Monmouth Park ship-in for trainer Michael Dini; and Guildsman [post 1, Ricardo Santana, Jr.], a three-time winner for trainer Robert Falcone, Jr.

The Lucky Coin is slated as Race 9 on Friday's 10-race card. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern. Saratoga Live will present daily television coverage of the summer meet on FOX Sports. NYTB Awards To Honor Generazios, Ellen Bongard, Jeffrey Cannizzo

The New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB) is pleased to announce Thoroughbred breeders and owners Patricia Generazio and her late husband Frank Generazio, in addition to the recently deceased Ellen Bongard, will each receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in the New York-bred program.

Former NYTB executive director Jeffrey Cannizzo will also receive a special award for his exemplary service.

The honorees will be recognized at the NYTB's Annual Awards event, held in a special virtual format on Monday, April 5 at NYTBAwards.com. The 2020 New York-bred divisional champions and New York-bred Horse of the Year will also be unveiled during the event sponsored by the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund.

“On behalf of our board of directors we are proud to honor each of these noteworthy individuals for their contributions and service to the New York racing and breeding industry,” said NYTB president Tom Gallo. “Each one of them has made significant efforts as owners, breeders and administratively helping to make New York the best and most lucrative state-bred program in the country.”

Patricia Generazio and her husband Frank Generazio, Jr., who passed last November at the age of 91, campaigned a number of homebred multiple graded stakes winners. Mr. Generazio, who owned New England Sand and Gravel company, first got his start in the Thoroughbred industry in his native New England and was a trainer at Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs before he and his wife built a successful breeding operation that notably made an impact in New York, New Jersey and Florida.

Outstanding New York homebreds campaigned by the Generazios include multiple graded stakes winners Discreet Marq and Disco Partner. Subsequent homebred standouts include multiple graded stakes winner Pure Sensation, Precious Passion, Dowse's Beach and Saratoga Treasure.

“We've always been big supporters of the New York-bred program and will continue to breed in New York year-round,” said Patricia Generazio. “Frank always selected our breedings, and he loved the New York-bred program. I'm very thankful and appreciative to receive this award on behalf of both of us. His loss still hurts and our stable will be reduced substantially, but we already have many Disco Partner babies and we will continue to have a presence in New York.”

Ellen Bongard, who passed away at the age of 77 last December, was a pioneer in the New York Thoroughbred industry and her family owned one of the oldest active breeding farms in the state.

The daughter of the late attorney Bertram F. Bongard, who played a key role in the formation of the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund and New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc., Ellen and her sister Barbara Bongard owned Rojan Farm in Pine Plains, a flagship New York farm and a staple to the New York breeding industry for many years before moving to the Town of Northumberland near Saratoga Springs.

The Bongards stood many successful stallions at their Rojan Farm including Santa Anita Derby winner An Act, Northern Dancer's son Kick, Rare Earth, Back Bay Barrister and many others. Ellen was also credited with the creation of The Bongard Room at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The room is used for conferences and honors pioneers and legends of the state's breeding industry.

“She would definitely appreciate this,” said Barbara Bongard. “She's certainly done a lot for the New York-bred program. I like to say our father started our family's influential success in the industry and Ellen took the reins and continued on. We're thankful she's receiving this recognition.”

Jeffrey Cannizzo served as executive director of New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. for nearly 13 years before leaving to join the New York Racing Association, Inc. as senior director of government affairs in January. During his tenure, the New York-bred program gained significant exposure, stability and continued development and success. He elevated the position of executive director to one of leadership and national recognition for the New York Thoroughbred breeding program.

“New York's breeding industry has flourished in recent times and I feel very fortunate to  have played a small role in that success story,” said Cannizzo. “I'd like to thank the NYTB board of directors for their commitment to those working every single day on the 250 farms throughout New York. The success of the state-bred program comes with the tireless efforts of so many stakeholders. Being able to represent so many wonderful people and speak on their behalf for over a decade is something I will always cherish. The many relationships formed during my time with NYTB will always be important to me. The New York-bred program will always hold a special place.”
