Continuous and Fantastic Moon Added to Arc Line-Up

The three-year-old colts Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) and Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), winners of the St Leger and Deutsches Derby respectively, have been supplemented for Sunday's Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Sixteen horses remain engaged for the weekend's €5 million showcase race at ParisLongchamp. Eleven of the potential field are already Group 1 winners, including another Classic-winning colt of 2023, the unbeaten Prix du Jockey Club hero Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}), who is currently favourite.

With Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) holding multiple entries at the Arc meeting, Continuous is likely to be the sole runner for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore team in the big race and will aim to build on his Classic success at Doncaster 15 days prior to the Arc.

Fantastic Moon, who was ruled out of an Arc bid only last week through fears of soft ground, will now travel to Paris from Munich and will be ridden by Rene Piechulek, who won the race two years ago aboard Torquator Tasso (Ger). Owned by the Liberty Racing 2021 syndicate, Fantastic Moon is set to remain in training next year.

His trainer Sarah Steinberg said, “Fantastic Moon is in excellent form. He worked very well yesterday and handled the workout very well. We continue to hope for sunshine and good ground conditions in Paris for him to be able to call up his best form. We thought long and hard about which of the races would be the best for Fantastic Moon, and together with the owners we decided against a long trip to the US or Japan for Fantastic Moon this year.

“We will take advantage of the beautiful fall weather in Paris, the dried-up turf at Longchamp and a horse that has recovered very quickly after his last race.  A trip to the Breeders' Cup at the beginning of November, or travelling to Japan at the end of November, places an enormous burden on three-year-old horses, which we do not want to expose Fantastic Moon to.

She added, “The horse has shown everyone that he is a real star, and we are looking forward to his last outing in 2023 on Sunday in ParisLongchamp. I hope that the German turf fans will keep their fingers crossed for our Derby winner, and I am looking forward to a very exciting race against internationally accomplished top opponents.”

Rouget Pleased With Ace Impact Ahead Of The Arc, As Field Takes Shape

The undefeated G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe favourite Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) is pleasing trainer Jean-Claude Rouget ahead of the big day on Sunday. He is one of 16 on the radar for the ParisLongchamp showpiece after Sprewell (Ire) (Churchill {Ire})'s defection at the latest forfeit stage on Tuesday.

A colourbearer for Gousserie Racing and Ecuries Serge Stempniak, the five-for-five G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero ran out a three-quarter length winner of the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano when last seen in August.

“Why shouldn't I be optimistic? I'm coming in with a horse that's unbeaten,” said Rouget, who is seeking his second Arc after the success of Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in 2020.

“We know in any race anything can happen and we're coming to the end of the season, but he gets three kilos from the older horses, which is important. I'm optimistic in the sense that he goes into the race unbeaten and has done everything we have asked him to so far.

“It's been six weeks [since Deauville] and the six weeks have passed very quickly.”

The 2400-metre Arc will be the colt's first try over that trip and at that racecourse. In the lead up to Sunday's card, the weather also appears to be playing fair which is good news for several contenders.

“Obviously we can't be certain, but with the way he finishes his races and also the fact his sire was a winner over the distance gives us hope that he can stay,” he continued. “If the Prix du Jockey Club [French Derby] had been over a mile and a half, as it was in the past, he would have won that.

“Last year Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) was in the same place for us and he ran really well [finished second to Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB})]. I'm not worried about the course, he's an easy horse once he's settled in his race and there are plenty of horses that have won the Arc that also hadn't run at Longchamp before.

“I think it is going to be good for everyone, which is an interesting point about this year's race. In the past the race was often criticised for its heavy ground and the fact horses are tired, but this year I think the ground is going to suit everyone.”

Ground Key For Feed The Flame And Fantastic Moon

G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Feed The Flame (GB) (Kingman {GB})'s camp is hoping for a bit of ease in the ground. Pascal Bary is seeking his first Arc, and is also confident in his Jean-Louis Bouchard-owned colt, who was second to Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in the G2 Prix Niel earlier this month.

“He's a very good horse, he has a very good temperament and he gets the mile and a half really, really well,” said Bary. “I think on the day of the Arc, the ground will be slightly different and he will be more comfortable on that ground.

“Anything a bit softer than the ground he encountered in the Jockey Club, Grand Prix de Paris and Prix Niel would be appreciated.”

The connections of G1 Deutsches Derby hero and Prix Niel scorer Fantastic Moon were pleased with their colt's Tuesday work at Munich and have not ruled out the Arc at this stage. Raced by the Liberty Racing Syndicate, Fantastic Moon would need to be supplemented.

“Fantastic Moon's work in Munich was very good,” said Liberty Racing Syndicate's Lars-Wilhelm Baumgarten on X on Tuesday morning. “The trainer will have a discussion with the owners about the possibilities with an eye on ground conditions. The Arc is in any case again a real option, if the sun continues.”

Another expected supplement is the Coolmore partners' Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), who won the G1 St Leger for Aidan O'Brien in mid-September.

Two Group-Winning Wild Cards Added to the Arc Sale Catalogue

Two group winners have been added to the Arc Sale–set to go on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Saint-Cloud–in Jack Darcy (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and Freville (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}).

Consigned by Barton Sales as lot 15, Jack Darcy, the G3 Glorious S. runner-up, is out of a half-sister to Group 1 winners Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}) and Reams of Verse (Nureyev). This is the close family of champion, six-time Group 1 heroine Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Freville, lot 25, conditioned by Christopher Head, found success in the G3 Prix d'Aumale at ParisLongchamp in early September and the juvenile filly hails from the female family of Linamix (Fr) (Mendez {Fr}). She will be offered with her entry in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac-Criterium des Pouliches, where she is considered one of the favorites for the contest.

Foy Title For Lope De Vega’s Place Du Carrousel

Al Shaqab Racing's Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), already a Group 1 winner in last year's G1 Prix de l'Opera, defeated defending champion Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) by a neck to take Sunday's G2 Qatar Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp. The latter was a half-length to the good of 2022 G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in third.

The 4-year-old filly was the 13-5 second choice behind her G1 Prix Ganay conqueress Iresine at 1-2. Content to race midfield as Plesant Jane (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) forged to the front while watched by Fenelon (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Place Du Carrousel perched one off the fence next to Sammarco with Iresine last of the quintet. Drifting back a spot to fourth on the bend, the daughter of G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victress Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) remained well covered up, as the field neared the straight. Closing willingly when given her cue, she quickly drew on even terms at the 200-metre mark and found just enough late to withstand the withering run of Iresine in the final strides.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, racing manager for Al Shaqab Racing, said, “The filly showed that she's in good form. She's still fresh because she hasn't run much this year, due to a slight setback in the spring. The weather conditions are exceptional today, and Monsieur Fabre preferred to go for the Qatar Prix Foy rather than the [G1] Qatar Prix Vermeille, anticipating that there would be less pace in the Foy.”

Since her Opera heroics last October, Place Du Carrousel was a never-nearer fifth in the Ganay this spring, but after a break, was a winner over good to soft ground in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville in August. Connections are now dreaming of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“When we decided to keep her in training at four, after her success in the Prix de l'Opéra Longines last year, the idea was

to aim her at the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe,” he added. “So if all goes well between now and then, we'll be heading to the race of dreams.”

Mandore International Agency, on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing, picked up the bay for €260,000 out of the Arqana Select Sale at Deauville in September of 2020 from the Ballylinch Stud draft.

Pedigree Notes

One of 19 Group 1 winners for her Ballylinch sire, Place Du Carrousel is the first foal out of Traffic Jam, who also ran second in the G2 Prix de Pomone. Since foaling the Foy winner, she has delivered four fillies–the 3-year-old Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a 1.05-million gns Kingman (GB) juvenile named Monyat Galby (Ire), a yearling by Sea The Stars (Ire) who is consigned as lot 158 by Ballylinch to the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, and a full-sister to the winner this term.

Her third dam, Sweet Emotion (Ire) (Bering {GB}), foaled Listed Midsummer S. victor Winged Cupid (Ire) (In The Wings {GB}), who also ran second in the G1 Racing Post Trophy. This is the extended family of the high class dual Group 1 winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).
