Telecaster Camp Eyes Arc Bid

Castle Down Racing’s Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), who won the G3 La Coupe on June 25 and the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville two starts later on Aug. 30, is a potential contender for the G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, trainer Hughie Morrison announced on Tuesday. The 4-year-old colt also won the G2 Dante S. last term.

“It’s definitely a possibility that he could go,” said Morrison. “Nothing really sprang out of the trials to put us off. The filly who won the [G1 Prix] Vermeille [Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal)] was impressive, but connections said afterwards that was her day. On quick ground the Vermeille was run three or four lengths quicker than the Foy. You might not be able to take that literally, but given all the results I think we have a right to be there.

“It was heavy when we won at Deauville so if it was soft that would be in our favour, I think–we wouldn’t want it quick, but hopefully at that time of year it wouldn’t be anyway.

“It all seemed to click last time, he seems to have taken the race very well. We’re realistic, but the owner quite rightly feels finishing third in the Arc might be viewed better than a Group 1 anywhere else in the world at this time of yea–bar the [Oct. 17 G1] Champion S.”

Shamardal’s Earthlight Back on Point at ParisLongchamp

Godolphin’s Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) suffered a first defeat in Deauville’s G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest last month and last term’s G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero bounced back in style, under a supremely confident Mickael Barzalona, to garner Sunday’s G3 Qatar Prix du Pin at ParisLongchamp. Settled off fast early fractions in seventh after breaking to the fore, the 9-10 pick made smooth headway on the bridle into contention passing the quarter-mile marker and unleashed a familiar burst once shaken up for the lead with 150 metres remaining to deny stablemate Tropbeau (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) by an ultimately comfortable 3/4-of-a-length.

“Earthlight is such a lovely horse with a great attitude and he showed us what we knew he was capable of today,” said Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard. “Mickael felt that he didn’t have the best trip and was wide the whole way, which makes it a pretty long way round when you are going to the second winning-post here. He said that Earthlight was brave and will come on for the race. He was having a good blow afterwards, he’s quite a heavy horse who needs plenty of work and plenty of racing, so that will do him good. Andre [Fabre] is confident that Earthlight could stay a mile, but options are running out at this time of year, so I would imagine that the G1 Prix de la Foret would be one of the main races that come into consideration.”

The trainer concurred, saying, “He didn’t run badly in his last race, but sprinting for the first time against older horses is a a different story and not easy. Of course, he will now come back [over seven furlongs here] in the [Oct. 4 G1] Prix de la Foret.”

Earthlight is the first foal bred from G1 Fillies’ Mile runner-up Winters Moon (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), whose own dam Summertime Legacy (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) took the G3 Prix des Reservoirs and ran third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Summertime Legacy has four stakes performers to her credit, headed by G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud victor Mandaean (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Wavering (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), herself the dam of the G3 Prix de Flore second Switching (Street Cry {Ire}) and G3 Prix Chloe placegetter Flowrider (Street Cry {Ire}). Summertime Legacy is the leading performer for Zawaahy (El Gran Senor), who in turn is kin to G1 Epsom Derby hero Golden Fleece (Nijinsky) and the stakes-producing Listed Modesty H. victrix Office Wife (Secretariat). Anthony Van Dyck Denies Stradivarius in the Foy

Coolmore’s 2019 G1 Epsom Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was winless in seven starts, six of those attempts coming at the highest level, since registering that Blue Riband success and revelled in his old gusto to outbattle Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in a pulsating renewal of Sunday’s G1 Qatar Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp. He lined up as the 19-5 second choice, coming back off a second to Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the June 5 G1 Coronation Cup at Newmarket and a fifth in Royal Ascot’s G2 Hardwicke S. last time, and led a steady tempo for the most part. He looked set to be swamped, but was up for a battle when tackled and headed by Stradivarius off the home turn, reclaiming the initiative with 300 metres remaining and staying on strongly under a continued drive to hold that rival’s renewed effort by short neck.

“We knew there was no early speed in the race and hatched a plan to move forward early,” revealed winning rider Mickael Barzalona. “We jumped off easily and I found myself in front, so I let him find a rhythm and go along bit by bit. I had a bit of trouble getting him to stretch out, but once he sensed the danger of Stradivarius he fought back gamely and found more with every stride. We know Stradivarius makes up ground easily, but sometimes gets caught for a bit of acceleration so I wasn’t too worried. I gave him a breather turning for home before winding him up and I think he enjoyed that. He has every right to a place in the line-up for the Arc as he gets into a good rhythm and just keeps galloping in a straight and true line.”

Owner Bjorn Nielsen has not discounted a tilt the Arc for his star stayer Stradivarius and said, “They have basically walked there and Frankie thought he should have gone in front. The race has turned into a sprint and we were only beaten a neck. To be beaten in such circumstances isn’t too much of a worry and certainly not a disgrace. I don’t know if he will run in the Arc, I need to speak with John [Gosden], but given how that race was run I wouldn’t rule it out. The ground conditions on the day will not play a huge part. He goes better on good ground, but can handle soft if needs be.”

Anthony Van Dyck is the fourth of five foals and one of three winners for G3 Blue Diamond Prelude victress Believe’n’succeed (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who also produced by G1 Railway S.-winning New Zealand champion sprinter Bounding (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) and a yearling filly by Galileo (Ire). His dam, full to MGSW sire Kuroshio (Aus) and the stakes-winning Agulhas (Aus), is a daughter of GI Alabama S. and GI Test S. heroine November Snow (Storm Cat). Shamardal’s Tarnawa Powers to Vermeille Triumph

His Highness The Aga Khan’s Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal), who annexed the G2 Blandford S. on this weekend last year, defeated this semester’s Blandford victress Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}) when successful in last month’s G3 Give Thanks S. at Cork. At the top of her game for Sunday’s G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille over 12 furlongs at ParisLongchamp, she displayed an impressive turn of foot to down a stellar cast in taking fashion. Settled in rear for most of this stamina test, the 28-5 chance made eyecatching headway out wide in the straight and powered clear once quickening smartly for the lead approaching the final furlong to easily account for Raabihah (Sea the Stars {Ire}) by three lengths, with that rival edging the pacesetting Dame Malliot (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) by a short head for second.

“She is a marvellous filly, the Prix Vermeille is a very, very prestigeous race and she needed to be good to win there,” said assistant trainer Mark Weld. “She has lots of speed and class and deserves a Group 1 win. She was very impressive when winning the Blandford last year, just like last month in the Group 3 [Give Thanks] at Cork. We have a lot of hopes for her and she is very straightforward. The whole family have got better with age, particularly the females. She is a pleasure to train and we are very lucky to have her. I have just spoken to my father and we will have a look at the next step. She holds an entry in the [Oct. 4 G1] Prix de l’Opera and she is comfortable over 10 furlongs, so that’s a possibility.” The Arc is not yet out of the equation as stud manager Georges Rimaud revealed, “She was in good form and Dermot [Weld] was keen to run her here in search of a first Group 1 win. She is nice, she is consistent and won well. She is not in the Arc, but today she won the supplementation [fee] so it is a possibility that she will come back on the first Sunday in October.”

The Arc also remains on the agenda for runner-up Raabihah, according to Jean-Claude Rouget. “She ran well, but now she is racing against tougher rivals,” he reflected. “She was beaten by a good, older filly and proved that she is the best 3-year-old filly in France. We will see how she is over the next two weeks, I have spaced her races and never trained her hard so I think that she can improve on that and be at her best in three weeks’ time. This defeat hasn’t altered plans and, if she is well in herself, she will run in the Arc.”

Tarnawa, a half-sister to the unraced 2-year-old colt Tazaral (Ire) Fastnet Rock (Aus) and a weanling filly by Siyouni (Fr), is the first foal bred from MSW dual G3 Curragh Cup third Tarana (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), herself the leading performer for G3 Noblesse S. third Tarakala (Ire) (Dr Fong), who in turn is the best horse produced by Listed Oyster S. second Tarakana (Shahrastani). Continuing the theme, Tarakana is the leading light out of Tarafa (Ire) (Akarad {Fr}), herself a half-sister to five black-type winners headed by G3 Princess Royal S. victress Tashtiya (Ire) (Shergar {GB}), G3 Prix Messidor victor Tassmoun (Kalamoun {GB}) and Listed Chester S. winner Tarikhana (Ire) (Mouktar {Ire}), who in turn is the dam of G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero Tiraaz (Lear Fan).
