Maxios Filly Upsets the Grotte

Runner-up in the G3 Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville in October and in the Listed Criterium du Languedoc at Toulouse the following month, Ecurie Waldeck's Cirona (GB) (Maxios {GB}) stuck her neck out to cause an upset in Sunday's G3 Prix la Grotte at ParisLongchamp. Soon in front under Maxime Guyon, the 18-1 shot had to dig in when headed a furlong out but was game against the rail to edge a five-way thriller by a head from Silvestri (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), with the same margin separating her and King's Harlequin (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

Flintshire’s Cheshire Academy in Noailles Upgrade

White Birch Farm's Cheshire Academy (Fr) (Flintshire {GB}), who was victorious over 10 furlongs at Pau in both prior starts, retained his perfect record–after a fashion–when stewards intervened to promote the Jean-Claude Rouget trainee from a second-place finish, at the expense of 4-5 favourite Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), in Sunday's G3 Prix Noailles at ParisLongchamp. The 37-10 chance was slowest away and raced towards the rear until turning for home in this black-type bow. Nudged along to reduce arrears with 500 metres remaining, he came under increased pressure passing the quarter-mile marker and, impeded by the errant Pretty Tiger when set to pounce deep inside the final furlong, kept on well to finish a sliver behind that subsequently demoted rival.

“I didn't see the incident live, but from watching the head-on replay it was obvious and, with a nose between the two, I am not surprised the stewards took the 'winner' down,” explained trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “This horse has a great potential, he has improved physically with time, but is very immature and still on the weak side. He would have preferred faster ground and the jockey said it was too soft for him. He quickened like a good one in the straight and will now go straight to the [June 6 G1] Prix du Jockey club [at Chantilly]. That will give him time to get stronger and, even if he doesn't win, it should set him up for the [July 14 G1] Grand Prix de Paris over one-and-a-half miles back here. That could be his race and, with time, he should definitely develop into a nice horse.”

Cheshire Academy is the first of two foals produced by stakes-winning GI Flower Bowl S. runner-up Danza Cavallo (Fr) (Sunday Break {Jpn}), herself full to MGSW Scandinavian champion Brownie (Fr) and one of three stakes winners out of the Listed Prix Urban Sea runner-up Tropical Mark (GB) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}). Tropical Mark is a granddaughter of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Tropicaro (Fr) (Caro {Ire}), who produced G3 Prix La Force scorer The Scout (Kris {GB}) and is the ancestress of G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua victor Amaron (GB) (Shamardal). Danza Cavallo, who is also a half-sister to GSW G1 Prix du Cadran third Trip To Rhodos (Fr) (Rail Link {GB}), has a yearling filly by Almanzor (Fr) to come.

Frankel One-Two In the Vanteaux

It was all about Frankel (GB) in Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux at ParisLongchamp, with the Juddmonte giant supplying the first two fillies home in this early Prix de Diane pointer. While the market spoke very much in the favour of Petricor (GB) carrying the green-and-pink livery, it was the 14-1 shot Rumi (Fr) who had first run on that rival to upset the odds. Racing for Al Shira'aa Farms, the latter who had won in impressive style on her sole 2-year-old start over this course and distance in October and had been fourth just eight days prior to this in a 10 1/2-furlong conditions event at Saint-Cloud. Positioned in a close-up second with the tempo only tepid, she had five lengths in hand on Petricor as a result and it is testament to the ability of the 7-5 favourite that she managed to get on terms and briefly get her head in front a furlong from home. Rumi, who had been committed by Olivier Peslier with over two furlongs to race, had raced more efficiently and despite the effort of Pierre-Charles Boudot to claw back the deficit on the runner-up there was a 3/4-of-a-length margin between them at the line. Omnia Munda Mundis (GB) (Australia {GB}) was the same margin away in third in a race that could prove a significant guide to the Chantilly Classic. “She is a filly I really like and she had won well as a 2-year-old and when she ran eight days ago it was a matter of giving her a race to get her fit for this,” winning trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias commented. “She won nicely and we'll come back here for the [May 24 G1 Prix] Saint-Alary.”

Rumi, who made a splash at the Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, hails from a proven Wertheimer family with her dam Secrete (Fr}) (Cape Cross {Ire}) being a daughter of the high-class producer Featherquest (GB) (Rainbow Quest). Secrete, whose prior black-type performers are the G3 Prix Noailles third Normandy Eagle (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and the Listed Bluebell S. scorer Solage (GB) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire), is therefore a half to the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud heroine Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and the G2 Prix de Royallieu scorer Balladeuse (Fr) (Singspiel {Ire}). Responsible for three black-type performers each, the former is the dam of the G2 Prix du Muguet winner Plumatic (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and second dam of the Saint Alary third Solsticia (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) who took the Listed Prix Zarkava on this card. Balladeuse's trio is headed by the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). This is also the family of the G1 Prix Lupin-winning prolific sire Groom Dancer, the G1 Prix Vermeille-winning champion Indian Rose (Fr) (General Holme) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-winning sire Falco (Pivotal {GB}). Secrete's as-yet unnamed 2-year-old colt is by Galileo (Ire), while she also has a yearling colt by Roaring Lion.

Classic Clues in Abundance on Sunday

There is no doubt that the Flat is back on Sunday, with the action at Leopardstown and ParisLongchamp featuring several Classic contenders jostling for position. In the G3 Ballylinch Stud “Priory Belle” 1000 Guineas Trial at the Foxrock venue, Coolmore hold a strong hand with last year's G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) saddled with just a three-pound penalty despite those exploits. Ryan Moore has picked her over Aidan O'Brien's promising maiden winners Empress Josephine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Joan of Arc  (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), with their illustrious pedigrees suggesting there could be plenty to come as 2021 rolls on. Joan Brosnan's Loch Lein (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was impressive when winning a six-furlong maiden at Cork in September and represents the Jessie Harrington yard, while Shadwell's Mehnah (GB) (Frankel {GB}) looked a filly with a bright future when scoring on her debut over seven furlongs at Dundalk in September.

While the Listed Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2000 Guineas Trial S. lacks the same strength as the fillies' version, there is nevertheless intrigue with a clutch of aspiring Classic protagonists attempting to meet the form standard of Shadwell's G2 Beresford S. runner-up Monaasib (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) and Jim Bolger's G3 Killavullan S. scorer Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}). Of the Ballydoyle trio, Ryan Moore has opted to ride the Mar. 21 Curragh maiden scorer Horoscope (Ire) (No Nay Never) while in the 10-furlong G3 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax S. he is on Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was fifth in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in October. Another of Rosegreen's Derby types is the Dundalk maiden winner Lough Derg (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), while the Harrington stable puts forward Fiona Carmichael's Naas maiden scorer Taipan (Fr) (Frankel {GB}). There is also the G3 Eyrefield S. first and second Flying Visit (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) and Wuqood (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), with the latter carrying TDN Rising Star status for Shadwell and Dermot Weld.

At ParisLongchamp, the 10-furlong G2 Prix d'Harcourt boasts Jean-Claude Seroul's high-class Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) bidding for a seventh Pattern-race success as he meets Jean-Louis Bouchard's returning G2 Prix Greffulhe winner and G1 Grand Prix de Paris third and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe fourth Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}). The card's nine-furlong G3 Prix la Force sees G1 Prix du Jockey Club hopefuls go to post including Godolphin's Erasmo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who captured Chantilly's seven-furlong Listed Prix Saraca in October, while in the G3 Prix Vanteaux over the same trip the cast of fillies is headed by Miguel Castro Megias's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G3 Prix Francois Boutin winner Tiger Tanaka (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). Only second in Saint-Cloud's Listed Prix la Camargo Mar. 21, she faces Juddmonte's exciting Petricor (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who won her sole start over 7 1/2 furlongs at Deauville in August when the Camargo winner Sweet Lady (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) was last. In the G3 Prix Noailles over the Jockey Club trip of 10 1/2 furlongs, Bernard Giraudon's progressive Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) looks to re-establish his dominance over another Juddmonte representative in Media Stream (GB) (Frankel {GB}) with the pair separated by seven lengths when first and third in the Listed Prix Francois Mathet at Saint-Cloud Mar. 21.
