Lope De Vega’s Sweet Lady Makes All For Vermeille Glory

Rebounding off a fourth in a quality renewal of July's G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Gemini Stud's G2 Prix Corrida victrix Sweet Lady (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–High Heel Sneakers {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) showed a clean set of heels to her 10 rivals and made all to register a first elite-level triumph in Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille at ParisLongchamp. Swiftly into stride and passing every marker in front, she was scrubbed along as the pack threatened off the home turn and called upon abundant reserves under an all-out drive inside the final quarter mile to hold on bravely for a career high.

“The plan this year has always been to target the autumn races with this filly as she loves soft ground,” revealed trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. “The spring had been positive, with her victory in the Corrida, and she had an ideal preparation for this. Everything has gone very smoothly at home in the mornings and she was ready for this. When I saw her travelling nicely, with her ears pricked, I thought she could do well. She wasn't stopping in the straight and didn't stop lenghthening. She is now a Group 1 winner and I am sure that her owners will be pleased to let her take her chance in the Arc. The softer the better on the day, so who knows what might happen on the day.”

Sweet Lady, who becomes the 16th Group 1 winner for her sire (by Shamardal), is the latest of seven reported foals out of Listed River Eden S. victrix and G2 May Hill S. runner-up High Heel Sneakers (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who also produced Listed Oaks Trial winner Toujours L'Amour (GB) (Authorized {Ire}). Sweet Lady's third dam Charmie Carmie (Lyphard) is the dam of MG1SW Peruvian champion Faaz (Fappiano) and her descendants also include G1 SA Fillies' Classic heroine Zaitoon (SAf) (Count Dubois {GB}). Charmie Carmie is kin to MGISW American Fillies' Triple Crown heroine Chris Evert (Swoon's Son), whose descendants are headed by Belmont S.-winning sire Chief's Crown (Danzig), GI Frizette S. and GI Gazelle S. heroine Classic Crown (Mr. Prospector) and MGISW dual GI Beldame S. victrix Sightseek (Distant View). Charmie Carmie is also kin to stakes-winning GI Delaware Oaks third All Rainbows (Bold Hour), herself the dam of GI Kentucky Derby heroine and MGISW US champion Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}).

Sea The Sky had failed to get in front since snagging her Nov. 2 debut at Chantilly and went postward for this marathon coming back off a third in Deauville's Aug. 14 G3 Prix Minerve. Settled off the pace in sixth for the most part, she made continued headway under pressure in the home straight to gain a narrow advantage entering the final furlong and was ridden out late to deny Divine Jewel in a bobbing finish for a career high.

Sea The Sky, the seventh of nine foals, is one of three scorers produced by an unraced full-sister to G1 Deutsches Derby-winning sires Samum (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and Schiaparelli (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and G1 Preis der Diana  (German Oaks) heroine Salve Regina (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). The €820,000 BBAG September yearling is a full-sister to runaway G1 Deutsches Derby-winning sire Sea The Moon (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and to the dam of this term's Listed Abingdon S. runner-up Golden Lyra (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). She is also a half-sister to Listed Dallmayr Coupe Lukull runner-up Sansiwa (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and a yearling filly by Frankel (GB). Sea The Sky's weanling full-brother is slated to sell at this year's Goffs November Foal sale, according to Gestut Gorlsdorf's Niko Lafrentz.

Churchill’s Blue Rose Cen Powers To G3 Prix d’Aumale Success

Yeguada Centurion's homebred 2-year-old filly Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}–Queen Blossom {Ire}, by Jeremy), who followed up wins at Saint-Cloud in June and at Clairefontaine in July with a runner-up finish in Deauville's Aug. 20 Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage in her latest start, made her experience tell in Thursday's G3 Prix d'Aumale at ParisLongchamp and surged to a career high in the one-mile fillies' test. The 13-5 second favourite was steadied to track the leaders in third after an alert getaway. Coming under pressure to reduce arrears approaching the quarter-mile marker, she quickened in stylish fashion to hit the front passing the eighth pole and was ridden out in the latter stages to account for British raider Heavenly Breath (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by an ultimately comfortable 1 1/2 lengths.

“She is so tough and genuine and has never let us down,” said winning trainer Christopher Head. “She was beaten by a good horse [Victoria Road] last time and was facing only fillies this time, so we were hopeful. Aurelien [Lemaitre] gave her the perfect ride, she handled the softer ground very well and she now deserves to take her chance in the [G1 Prix] Marcel Boussac. She takes her racing so well that I have no doubt that she will be ready on the day.” Reflecting on the performance of 'TDN Rising Star' Left Sea (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Carlos Laffon-Parias added, “Unfortunately, she tied up [in the straight] which explains why she has run like that.”

Blue Rose Cen is the lone foal out of G3 Park Express S. and GIII Santa Barbara S. victrix Queen Blossom (Ire) (Jeremy), herself the leading performer produced by G3 Silver Flash S. third Mark Of An Angel (Ire) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}). Mark Of An Angel, in turn, is a granddaughter of dual South African Grade 3 winner and G1 Gosforth Park Fillies & Mares Challenge third Grey Angel (GB) (Kenmare {Fr}).

Dubawi’s Kubrick Pounces For G3 Prix des Chenes Triumph

White Birch Farm's 2-year-old colt Kubrick (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Rosa Bonheur, by Mr. Greeley) backed up a July 24 debut second going seven furlongs at Dieppe with a breakthrough triumph at Deauville last month and continued on the upgrade by turning back a strong Irish challenge in Thursday's G3 Prix des Chenes at ParisLongchamp. The eventual winner employed patient tactics from flagfall and was settled sixth, at the tail of the field, through halfway. Making continued headway under pressure in the home straight, the 31-10 second favourite quickened to gain a slender advantage with 100 metres remaining and was ridden out in the dying embers to assert by a neck from Coolmore and Westerberg's hithero unbeaten Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) for a first black-type success.

“He is a nice, uncomplicated horse, we like to see them finish the way he did and it is very promising for the future,” commented trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “He is an easy horse to train, he is easy to ride and a real pleasure to deal with. He could be a horse for next year's French [2000] Guineas, but first we will try to run him in the [G1] Criterium International at Saint-Cloud if all is well with him.”

Kubrick, the seventh of eight foals, becomes the third scorer produced by Listed Prix de la Cochere runner-up Rosa Bonheur (Mr. Greeley), herself a daughter of G2 Prix Robert Papin victrix Rolly Polly (Ire) (Mukaddamah). The April-foaled homebred bay is a half-brother to GI Hollywood Derby, GI Shoemaker Mile and GI Maker's Mark Mile hero Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and a yearling filly by No Nay Never.
