Derby Winner Adayar’s Arc Bid Depends On Ground

Godolphin's Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), winner of the G1 Cazoo Derby and the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. in 2021, is likely to run in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 2, as long as he gets his desired ground, trainer Charlie Appleby confirmed on Thursday. If the going is too deep, he will instead be pointed for the Oct. 15 G1 Champion S. at Ascot. Fourth in the ParisLongchamp test last year over the heavy going, the bay was then fifth in the G1 Champion S. on QIPCO British Champions Day. Planned runs at Royal Ascot, Sandown, and Ascot, did not come to fruition, and the bay made a successful return to the races in the Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Conditions S. over 10 furlongs at Doncaster on Sept. 8.

“It's most likely Adayar is going to work on Saturday and if we're happy with that work we will then leave him in the Arc on Monday and take a look at it then,” said Appleby.

“We'll keep an eye on the ground. We know what it can be like [at ParisLongchamp] and I don't want him to have to encounter what he went through last year.

“Admittedly the race wasn't run to suit us–we ended up on the lead where we didn't want to be–but it was very testing conditions and then we backed him up on Champions Day.

“The mindset is still Champions Day, but if the Arc comes up as being sensible ground, we know at this time of year you're going to have to go where the ground is because every day it can change.

“If I was going to say we'll wait for Champions Day and all of a sudden it's bottomless there, I'll be kicking myself that I've potentially missed an opportunity of running in the Arc on decent ground.”

Added Appleby, “He looks great. Everyone was very pleased with the manner in which he did it at Doncaster and he's come out of there thinking he's King Kong again, and that's what you need.

“He finished last season off with two gruelling races in the Arc and on Champions Day and it takes a lot for a horse sometimes to come back from it.

“He's got his mojo 110% now. He's back to how he was when he won the Derby, if not better.”

The trainer also provided an update on Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who won three Group 1s in 2021 and was third in the Arc later that season. Third in the G2 Hardwicke S. on his 4-year-old bow, the chestnut has not graced a racecourse since an eighth-place finish in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on July 3.

“He's probably not going to be in the equation, to be honest,” Appleby added. “I feel for him in that we encountered quick ground during the summer. The first run [at Royal Ascot] we got away with it and on his second run we didn't think we'd get the conditions we unfortunately ran on in the end and it didn't help his cause.

“I backed right off him and what he's encountered hasn't helped us in preparation for an Arc.”

Group 2 Winner Quickthorn Ready For Cadran Challenge

Group winner Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) will start next in the G1 Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 1, trainer Hughie Morrison confirmed on Saturday. Since beginning his 2022 campaign in April, Lady Blyth's 5-year-old gelding was second in the Listed Further Flight S. at Nottingham and filled that position again in the G3 Sagaro S. behind Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) at Ascot at the end of April. The G3 Henry II S. went his way at Sandown one month later and he triumphed in the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil at ParisLongchamp on July 14. In his most recent appearance, he ran out a 14-length winner of the G2 Lonsdale Cup at York on Aug. 19, and turned in a solid work for Morrison on Saturday.

Morrison said, “He worked well this morning and will go for the Cadran. He's in great form.”

Eldar Eldarov In ‘Good Form’, Champions Day Or Prix Royal-Oak Under Consideration

Classic winner Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) has exited his G1 Cazoo St Leger victory on Sunday “in good form” according to trainer Roger Varian. The lightly raced KHK Racing Ltd. colourbearer could possibly reappear this season in the G2 Long Distance Cup at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day or in the Oct. 23 G1 Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp.

“He's in good form, he's come out of the race very well,” said Varian. “I wouldn't rule it out [running again]. I have the option of running him again if I wanted to, he's only raced four times this year and he had a nice break from the [G1] Grand Prix de Paris to the Leger.

“He's only had five lifetime starts and he could run again and the two races to consider are the Long Distance Cup at Ascot or the Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp. They are not until October and are a week apart, so he's got plenty of time and we've got plenty of time to make a decision.”

A winner of his first three starts at two and three, including the G2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot in June, the 'TDN Rising Star' was fourth in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris to Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) on July 14, prior to his St Leger heroics.

Varian added, “There's every chance and no reason to think he won't [make into a cup horse]. His pedigree would suggest he will improve with age and he's won twice now over a mile and three-quarters looking like he will be even better when he goes up to two miles.

“So we have to dream about him turning into a cup horse and see how things develop.”

Arc Calls For Tamayuz’s Simca Mille After Niel Win

Providing a boost to his G1 Grand Prix de Paris conqueror Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), if any was needed, in Sunday's G2 Qatar Prix Niel at ParisLongchamp, Haras de la Perelle and Stephane Wattel's Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) booked his own Arc ticket for the rematch. Always happy taking a lead in third, the 3-1 shot was sent to the front by Gregory Benoist two out and had enough energy to run away from the whip en route to a comfortable 3/4-of-a-length verdict over TDN Rising Star Lassaut (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}), with True Testament (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) a length behind in third. The May 29 G1 Tokyo Yushun hero and 19-10 favourite Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) could only manage fourth, a further two lengths away.
