Freshman Sire Masar Off The Mark In Paris

Darley's first-crop sire Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) became Europe's latest freshman off the mark when Godolphin's homebred juvenile Will Scarlet (GB) eased to a smooth victory in Thursday's €34,000 Prix du Bassin Parisien over seven furlongs at ParisLongchamp.

1st-ParisLongchamp, €34,000, Cond, 6-15, 2yo, 7fT, 1:26.60, gd.
WILL SCARLET (GB) (c, 2, Masar {Ire}–Lady Marian {Ger} {G1SW-Fr, GSW & G1SP-Ger, $546,566}, by Nayef), a May 25 debut runner-up tackling 6 1/2 furlongs at this venue last time, recovered from a sluggish getaway to stalk the tempo in a handy third through the early fractions. Impeded along the rail by the errant Jojo Junior (Fr) (Hunter's Light {Ire}) soon after turning for home, the 2-5 favourite worked his way outwards into the clear passing the furlong pole and quickened smartly to deny Intellect (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) by an ultimately snug 3/4-of-a-length in the dying strides, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by New Approach {Ire}). Will Scarlet, half-brother to a yearling filly by Kingman (GB), is the ninth of 10 foals and fifth scorer out of G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) and G1 Prix Jean Romanet runner-up Lady Marian (Ger) (Nayef), who was the second highest-priced lot when knocked down for 1.8-million guineas at Tattersalls' 2008 December Mares sale. The February-foaled bay is also kin to dual Group 2-winning G1 Jebel Hatta fifth Loxley (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). His dam is a half-sister to German Group 3 victor Lucidor (Ger) (Zafonic) and hails from the family of multiple Group 1-winning sire Lomitas (GB) (Niniski). Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, €23,000. Quartet Of French Fillies’ Races To Be Sponsored By Darley

A race series for 3-year-old fillies in France will be sponsored by Darley, the organisation and France Galop announced on Tuesday.

Since discontinuing its sponsorship of the G1 Prix Morny, Darley has instead branched out into a quartet of fillies' races. The newly sponsored races are:

  • Listed Prix de Thiberville, ParisLongchamp on June 15
  • G3 Prix Chole, Chantilly on July 16
  • Listed Prix Joubert, ParisLongchamp on Sept. 7
  • Listed Prix Coronation, Saint-Cloud on Sept. 22.

Valuable race series in Great Britain and Ireland are also newly sponsored by Darley, it was announced earlier in the year.

Sam Bullard, Director of Stallions, said, “Following the expansion of Darley's sponsorships at grassroots level in Great Britain and Ireland, it was only natural to extend this support of racing to France. We have an exciting young roster of stallions standing at Haras du Logis and these new sponsorships further demonstrate Darley's support of French racing and breeding. We are delighted to be involved.”

Olivier Delloye, Chief Executive of France Galop, said, “France Galop is delighted to count once again on the support of Darley, a leading international partner, which confirm the quality of our races.”

Breizh Sky Comes Good In The Paul De Moussac

Finally getting his ideal conditions and ride, TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) had his head back in front in Sunday's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac at ParisLongchamp. Dogged mainly by ill fortune since his success in Deauville's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure in July, the Alain Jathiere colour-bearer was reverting to seven furlongs following his creditable third in this venue's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains last month. Allowed to stride to the front from his disadvantageous wide draw by Maxime Guyon, the Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti-trained 5-1 shot kept finding to ward off his G3 Prix Djebel conqueror Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths.

Breizh Sky, who had gained his TDN Rising Star tag with an eight-length debut win over six furlongs at Saint-Cloud before following up in the Roland de Chambure, had looked on form to have levelled off when going down narrowly in the G3 Prix la Rochette and when third in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere over this course and distance. Again missing out in the Djebel on his return also at this distance at Deauville in April, the feeling persisted that he was being continually found out by the lack of a strong pace to run at under hold-up tactics.

This reversion to front-running seemed to unlock his latent talent and Alessandro Botti is hoping he can use it as a stepping stone back to the big time. “He is such a good and brave horse and really deserved to win this,” he said. “After his good performance in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, my first idea was to go straight to the [G1] Prix Jean Prat but he was doing so well that I was tempted by this. We will go to the Jean Prat now and enjoy this victory.”

Pedigree Notes

Breizh Sky is out of Anna Danse (Fr) (Anabaa), a granddaughter of Danse Bretonne (Fr) (Exit To Nowhere)  who was responsible for the G3 Prix Gladiateur winner and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Varevees (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and was the second dam of last year's G1 Preis der Diana heroine Toskana Belle (Fr) (Shamalgan {Fr}). Danse Bretonne is kin to the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc and G3 Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord winner and GI Man O'War S. runner-up and sire Kaldounevees (Fr). Anna Danse's unraced 2-year-old filly by Birchwood (Ire) is named Breizhy Girl (Fr), while she also has a yearling filly by Attendu (Fr) named Breizh Danse (Fr).

Anmaat Prevails In Blanket For The Prix D’Ispahan

Less than a length covered the first five home in Monday's G1 Prix d'Ispahan at ParisLongchamp, with Shadwell's Anmaat (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) edging it from Light Infantry (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}) in a finish that was touch-and-go. Successful in the G2 Prix Dollar on testing ground here on Arc weekend, the Owen Burrows-trained 5-year-old who was runner-up to Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the G3 Gordon Richards S. at Newmarket earlier this month stayed on the best to oust four rivals in line across the track. They were, in order, the outsider Facteur Cheval (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}), who was nosed out of the runner's-up spot, Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) beaten by two short necks with the latter suffering significant trouble in running in the closing stages.
