Palace Pier, Poetic Flare Tied Atop Cartier Horse Of The Year Standings

Royal Ascot winners Palace Pier and Poetic Flare are tied at the top of the Cartier Horse Of The Year standings following their victories at Royal Ascot last week.

The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing. There are eight equine awards – the Cartier Horse Of The Year, the Cartier Older Horse, the Cartier Sprinter, the Cartier Stayer, the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt, the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly, the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt and the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly.

The 31st annual Cartier Racing Awards will be awarded in November. Cartier continues its ongoing support with the presentation of the Cartier Racing Awards.

Both Palace Pier and Poetic Flare currently have 96 points in the Cartier Horse Of The Year standings after establishing themselves as the best milers of their generations.

Four-year-old Palace Pier, trained by John & Thady Gosden for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, cemented his status as the world's best older horse over a mile when recording his fourth G1 victory in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 15.

Poetic Flare has emerged as the top miler of the Classic crop following a remarkable start to his season for breeder/trainer Jim Bolger that included a stunning success in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes at the Royal Meeting on June 15.

The son of 2012 Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Dawn Approach had previously run in all three major mile Classics for colts, winning the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, finishing sixth in the Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains and going down by a short-head in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Other contenders in the Cartier Horse Of The Year standings include the Aidan O'Brien-trained Mother Earth (72), who followed up her QIPCO 1000 Guineas win and Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches second with a third in the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 18.

St Mark's Basilica (64), owned like Mother Earth by a Coolmore partnership and also trained by Aidan O'Brien, has already established himself as one of the stars of 2021 with victories in the G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains and the G1 Qatar Prix du Jockey Club.

Palace Pier, who was crowned last season's Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt, also leads the way in the Cartier Older Horse standings, ahead of G1 Prix d'Ispahan scorer Skalleti (56).

Last year's Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly Love made an impressive return to action at Royal Ascot with victory in the G1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes for Aidan O'Brien and a Coolmore partnership on June 16.

She currently has 48 points in the Cartier Older Horse category, along with stable-companion Broome, who finished second in the G2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19. Helvic Dream, Lady Bowthorpe, Mare Australis and Pyledriver also feature among the early contenders in the same category with 40 points each.

Poetic Flare (96) and St Mark's Basilica (64) lead the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt category ahead of G1 Cazoo Derby victor Adayar (52).

Mother Earth heads fellow Classic winners Snowfall (56) and Joan Of Arc (56) in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly division, with the latter having provided Aidan O'Brien with a historic first success in the G1 Prix de Diane Longines at Chantilly on June 20. Alcohol Free, winner of the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 18, and G1 Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary heroine Incarville are next on 40 points.

Oxted (40) heads the Cartier Sprinter category following his win in the G1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 15. American star Campanelle (32) made a triumphant return to action as she was awarded the G1 Commonwealth Cup at the Royal Meeting on June 18 following a stewards' enquiry.

Having filled the runner-up spot for the past two years, Dream Of Dreams (32) recorded a deserved success in the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19, while the David Evans-trained Rohaan (24) continues to be one of the success stories of the season, landing the Wokingham Handicap on his latest start on June 19.

There is a new name atop the Cartier Stayer standings following Subjectivist's win for trainer Mark Johnston in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on June 17. The Dr Jim Walker-owned four-year-old has 60 points, ahead of Spanish Mission (28) and Princess Zoe (24) who were third and second in the staying highlight.

Murphy, Gosden, Godolphin Clinch Royal Ascot Titles

Champion jockey Oisin Murphy secured his first Leading Jockey title at Royal Ascot with five victories, one ahead of Ryan Moore, with Frankie Dettori and William Buick both partnering three winners during the meeting.

Murphy, whose final day success on Foxes Tales in the Golden Gates Handicap helped clinch the title, said: “I wouldn't have expected it if you had asked me on Tuesday morning if I would be leading jockey this week – of course not. It normally belongs on Ryan or Frankie, but they gave me a turn this week.

“Thanks very much to the fast horses. It has been a super week. It's special, because as I get older, I appreciate these days more and more. I know I'm only 25, but life, as we learnt this week, is precious, and it's a continuous reminder.

“My best moment of the week was Alcohol Free. She came along at a very important time in my career last year – I was under a lot of pressure and I managed to nail a G1 – and yesterday was a similar scenario. The pressure was on.”

John & Thady Gosden broke new ground as the first training partnership to take Leading Trainer honours at Royal Ascot. The father and son combination sent out four winners, the same total as Andrew Balding, but took the title by virtue of Reach For The Moon's second in Saturday's Listed Chesham Stakes.

John Gosden said: “First of all, we had the most glorious weather for three days – cool on Thursday, stunningly hot and summer on Tuesday and Wednesday, and great racing under those conditions. It was wonderful to see people back in here; 10,000 people, all socially distanced, tests taken.

“There is no doubt with the rain that came heavily here on the Friday. The Ascot executive and all the groundstaff did a magnificent job in changing some of the railing, organising to get away from some of the places that were a little bit waterlogged, and we raced right through yesterday and right through today.

“Fabulous racing and horses seemed in great order, and I think it's a testament to willpower that it's been pulled off with government blessing to go ahead, and I think it's a very safe environment. Of course, we are in big, open spaces, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, but it was very safe at the same time.

“The first race on the first day, Palace Pier, was wonderful for us. The Gold Cup – we didn't have the best trip [with Stradivarius] but I thought the winner was the best horse, and I think he won in great style. We had a great meeting with some fillies winning G2 races, and it was a good atmosphere here – safe, sensible and people actually coming out and living their lives again.”

Godolphin received the Leading Owner award thanks to three victories, including Kemari winning the G2 Queen's Vase and Creative Force beating Naval Crown to provide the operation with a 1-2 in the G3 Jersey Stakes.

Hugh Anderson, Godolphin Managing Director (UK and Dubai) said: “I am delighted for everyone at Godolphin and of course His Highness Sheikh Mohammed. This has already been a memorable season for Godolphin with Derby success and to be crowned Royal Ascot Leading Owner once again is very special. We hope for more success throughout the rest of the year.”

Top-Rated Palace Pier Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth With Queen Anne Victory

The world's top-rated racehorse Palace Pier followed up his St James's Palace Stakes win from 2020 with victory in the opening contest of this year's Royal Ascot, the G1 Queen Anne Stakes over a mile. The win earned Palace Pier an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Mile this fall at Del Mar in California.

Sent off a red-hot 2/7 favorite under Royal Ascot's most prolific current jockey Frankie Dettori, the 4-year-old was pushed out for a comfortable length and a half success over Lope Y Fernandez (12/1), with Sir Busker (22/1) another length back in third.

Last year's G1 victory over the round mile was played out in front of empty grandstands, but today 12,000 spectators were able to enjoy a classy performance from Palace Pier. This victory was a 74th at the meeting for the rider, and a first for John Gosden in a training partnership with his son Thady.

A relieved John Gosden said: “It was a slowly run race over a straight mile and he's a very relaxed horse — you saw how he cantered down, he hack cantered down.

“I think we were very aware that there was no pace in the race. Frankie said, 'I'm drawn where I am so I'll stay on the wing' because we suspected a slow pace, which is what we got – a slow pace and a slow time – but then, don't sit out the back when they kick, with two and a half, three to run. He has done it really smoothly; he has come through, won his race, and is exactly like his father [Kingman], as soon as he gets there, he has done enough. And if I worked him at home with a very ordinary horse, he'd just stay with them – that's his game.

“If you are odds-on like that, it would be a bit odd if you weren't nervous, because your only thing round the corner is a banana skin, so it can happen. He had a normal blow afterwards – he has done more in his work at home than he did today. I've been second in this race three times – it took [son] Thady to get me over the line!

“It's wonderful – those people who have come and had a test, it's fantastic and there's a gorgeous atmosphere because it's not crowded, it's very comfortable, and it's a gorgeous day. To that extent, full marks to people who made the effort.

“Palace Pier's options are the Sussex Stakes, the Jacques le Marois in Deauville, which he won last year. And obviously you can step him up a trip if you wanted to, for the Juddmonte International, something like that. He is a grand horse, great attitude, good looking, nice scope.”

Dettori said: “Wow, wow. What can I say? He has shown again that he is the best miler around.

“You can rely on Palace Pier. It is like getting one of the proper guys to take the first penalty and they will put it in the back of the net.

“He is one of the best horses in the world and everything went right. 31 years ago I rode my first Royal Ascot winner on Markofdistinction in the Queen Anne. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then.

“I am still getting the same kick and I am pretty relieved that everything went smooth. It makes a big difference [to have an early Royal Ascot winner]. I have a lot of big rides this week and it takes the pressure off.

“Palace Pier is the best miler around the world. He goes on any ground, he is very kind, does what you ask him to do. He comes from behind, can be up there and he is a great partner to have in these races. It's not just me, he should take the credit.

“You cannot imagine to see the colors, the people screaming. It is a mirage – I'm so pleased to have the crowd back. It's great. What can you say? Royal Ascot with people is amazing and this meeting is a big part of my life. I couldn't ask for anything more.”
