TVG Pacific Classic: A Singular Event That’s Never Gone Solo

If the bars in Del Mar were fully open and heavily patronized as usual this TVG Pacific Classic Week (oh, would that they were!) there might be money to be made with one trivial question:

How many times has the Pacific Classic, the signature event of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's summer meeting, been the only stakes race on that day's program?

The answer, given away by the headline on this piece, is never.

From its start the race that DMTC founding father John C. Mabee envisioned, championed, prodded and pushed to existence – and then won the 1991 inaugural with his Best Pal – has always had stakes company on the card.

But if, as the saying goes, 'Two's company, three's a crowd,' the 30th running on Saturday goes beyond a crowd to a throng. In addition to the $500,000 Classic there are four other stakes, with purses totaling $650,000, on an 11-race program.

How did it come to this?

For the first 16 years, officials carded one other stakes race on Classic Day. Then, in 2007-2009, three besides the Classic were included on the program. A cutback to Classic-plus-two was the formula from 2010 to 2018. Then, last year, the envelope was pushed to the plus-four that will be continued on Saturday.

The stakes escalation, DMTC executive vice president, racing and industry relations, Tom Robbins points out, is both practical and in keeping with a nationwide trend.

“The thing I like about it, and I think David (racing secretary David Jerkens) would agree, is that if you're going after a horse or horses on the East Coast, it's sometimes easier to sell them on the idea of coming out here if they can send more than one out and all travel at the same time on the same day. It has that advantage.

“And from the financial/business side it certainly attracts the players. We want to be attractive to our customers, to have quality programs, and this is our signature race surrounded by others that will also attract national attention.”

Craig Dado, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, not only echoes those sentiments but turns up the volume.

“I'm a big fan of it (stakes stacking),” Dado said. “In an era where you're trying to not only compete with other tracks but stand out, it makes sense. We're hoping to get a lot of eyeballs from around the country on the program Saturday. I'm not standing at home plate and pointing to the centerfield fence, but we're hoping to break the handle record.”

The highest single-day handle total in track history, except for the two days the Breeders' Cup was hosted in 2017, is $25,870,431 on Pacific Classic Day in 2018.

With Del Mar, like nearly every track in the country, racing sans all but a limited number of on-track spectators and relying on internet wagering to provide the lifeblood handle money totals, the notion that 'less is more' becomes an absurdity.

“We look at how those (other stakes) would fit on our schedule, but also how they would fit on the national calendar as well,” Robbins said. “We really want to highlight the Pacific Classic but we want to have a really big day. A lot of tracks do the same thing.”

There were five graded stakes, three of them Grade Is, of 12 races on the Travers Day program at Saratoga on August 8. Churchill Downs' adaption to the Covid-19 circumstances was a basic relocation of the multiple undercard stakes on the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby day programs, many of them Grade Is and Grade IIs, along with the marquee events to the first weekend of September instead of May.

“We could feel the heat (of lured-away horses) in some ways, but the good news is there were not a lot of conflicts there,” Robbins said. “No question the Pacific Classic is going to be the strongest day of the year, and that's what it's designed to be.”

The San Clemente Stakes for 3-year-old fillies was on the inaugural Pacific Classic card, and hasn't been a big day invitee since.

In the next 15 years when one additional stakes was included on the menu, the most frequent Classic partner was the Rancho Bernardo Handicap, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares (7 times). The Pat O'Brien, a 7-furlong sprint, was co-featured four times, the Del Mar Oaks three times and the Del Mar Debutante once.

The O'Brien, Oaks and Debutante all were, or eventually became, Grade I events.

Robbins on the Rancho Bernardo as Classic companion: “It was a race that we wanted to give a little strength to at that time and it fit well on the calendar.

“This year we're running it this Friday because it still fits on the calendar. It came up strong this year, so with that on Friday and the Del Mar Mile on Sunday, we have a good feature Friday, good feature on Sunday and a lot of strength on Saturday with what many consider the best horse in the country (Maximum Security) running in the Classic.”

The Rancho Bernardo has K M N Racing's Sneaking Out, a 4-year-old filly fresh from victory in the Grade II Great Lady M Stakes on the 4th of July as the 8-5 morning line favorite in a competitive field of eight.

The O'Brien and the Oaks have been Classic complements, though never as a duo, every year since 2005. The Del Mar Mile or the Del Mar Handicap have, separately, served to provide a major event on the turf every year since 2010.

Interest of racing fans nationally figures to be piqued by Saturday's Grade I Oaks and Grade II Handicap. The Oaks, at 1 1/8-miles on the turf, features Gary Barber's Laura's Light, trained by Peter Miller, who seeks to take the final step up the graded stakes ladder after winning the Grade III Honeymoon at Hollywood Park on May 30 and the Grade II San Clemente here on July 25.

The Del Mar Handicap is alluring due to the presence of United. The 5-year-old son of Giant's Causeway was narrowly beaten by 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar in last year's Breeders' Cup Turf and has won three straight graded stakes, most recently the Eddie Read at Del Mar on July 26.

“We're always aware of the schedule at the tracks before and after us on the calendar,” Robbins said. “It used to be Hollywood Park, now Santa Anita. The Bing Crosby and the Pat O'Brien have moved around to (align) with the Triple Bend at those places.

“We try to figure out what works best starting with Southern California and then looking at the other parts of the country.”

When it comes to the day of the Pacific Classic, Sunday holds a 16-13 lead over Saturday. That's mainly attributable to a streak of nine straight Sunday presentations from 2001-2009 and four in a row starting in 2011. Saturday, however, is on a six-year streak.

“That's not just a racing department decision,” Robbins said. “We do analysis and we work together. Every department has input on something like that. We bounced around with it on those years we had it on Sunday. I think it was even held the day after Travers Day (at Saratoga) one year.

“But now, we've kind of found this niche. You've got to factor in things from a racing and also from a business standpoint. We've found that Saturdays are typically stronger than Sundays.”

The numbers for the past decade don't lie. Over the span when the Classic was staged on Sunday from 2011-2014, the handle averaged $19.5 million. On Saturdays the last five year the average is $23.9 million.

“All the big race days have moved to Saturday,” Dado noted. “You get more eyeballs on the races and bigger handles.”

Procrastination is not an option when it comes to pinpointing the spot on the calendar for the Pacific Classic.

“That decision is usually made early,” Robbins said. “At the end of one calendar year or early the next. It's a day that people want to know about well in advance. The switchboard will start getting calls about it early in the year.

“We work hand-in-hand with the Thoroughbred Owners of California and we try to give them a stakes schedule in March. So we'll know well before that, but we don't generally announce anything until we have their approval.”

In the year of COVID-19, the squandering of a potential bar bet is but a speck of loss in the overall picture. Consider this, racing fans:

“We had a Breeders' Cup 2021 hat giveaway planned for Pacific Classic Day this year,” Dado said, a reference to Del Mar's second time to host the two-day fall championship event.

It'll keep until next year.

Mandella May Try Pacific Classic Next After United’s Eddie Read Score

Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella fired one of his big guns Sunday at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif., and the boom shook the grounds and might reverberate forward to the shore track's biggest race of the season.

The veteran trainer gave Flavien Prat a leg up on his turf ace United for the $200,000 Eddie Read Stakes at nine furlongs on grass and watched him walk his beat for an impressive half-length tally.

Then he shook up a couple of turf writers afterwards when he said he's seriously considering Del Mar's signature race – the $500,000, Grade 1 TVG Pacific Classic – as a next start for his ace even though the big chestnut son of Giant's Causeway has never run on the dirt.

“…this horse is training so well on the dirt, month after month, that I'm going to consider running him in the Pacific Classic,” Mandella said immediately following the victory. “I've been thinking all summer about it.”

That surprise set up a potential showdown between possibly the best grass horse on the grounds with possibly the best dirt horse in Maximum Security, who won his TVG Pacific Classic prep yesterday in a photo-finish thriller in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap.

United ran the Grade 2 Read distance in 1:46.71 and, as the 7/5 favorite, paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.60 across the board. The $120,000 share of the winner's purse pushed his bankroll to $1,453,549 for owner Larry, Nanci and Jaime Ross, who race under the name LNJ Foxwoods.

Finishing second in the Read was Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal's Sharp Samurai and third was CYBT, Gevertz, Gitomer, et al's Neptune's Storm.

United, a 5-year-old gelding, is racing in some of the best form of his life. He's now three-for-three on the year after winning a pair of Grade 2 turf tests at Santa Anita earlier in the year.

Mandella, it is recalled, surprised folks at Del Mar previously in 2015 when he unexpectedly entered his filly Beholder in the TVG Pacific Classic against the boys and she proceeded to towrope them by more than eight lengths in a stunning performance.

The trainer has four wins in the Pacific Classic already.


FLAVIEN PRAT (United, winner) – “The race came up perfect. He broke real well and we got a great spot. We went along fine and when I asked him, he just went on with it. When you ride a really good horse like this, it makes things easier. Good horses do good things; they put you in good spots. It's all easier with his kind.”

RICHARD MANDELLA (United, winner) – “We ran him short (less distance) just to pick his head up. Sometimes you run them long too many times they get stale. But this horse is training so well on the dirt, month after month, I'm going to consider running him in the Pacific Classic. (United has run 12 times on turf and twice on synthetics in his career). I've been thinking all summer about it. We'll think about the Del Mar Handicap on turf, too, but if he keeps training on dirt as well as he has been…”

The victory in the Eddie Read was the third stakes win of the session so far for rider Prat and his third in the race itself. He now has 47 stakes wins at Del Mar.

Baffert On Maximum Security: ‘I Only Had Him About 80 Percent”

Maximum Security was “good” Sunday morning, following an all-out effort for a nose victory  at Del Mar in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 San Diego Handicap, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert reported.

“I actually thought he was pretty good right after the race being that I only had him about 80 percent,” Baffert said. “I didn't think he'd have to do a stop-and-go movement (during the race) but he showed what a great horse he is.”

Making his first start for Baffert, first in five months, and under new jockey Abel Cedillo, Maximum Security vied with Midcourt for the lead through the first quarter in :23.74, dropped back to third place, 2 ½ lengths behind Midcourt at the half-mile mark, rallied to draw even with an eighth of a mile to go and prevailed by a nose at the end of the 1 1/16-mile race.

“It's a good starting point, we learned a lot about the horse, now we're caught up and he's ready to go,” Baffert said. Rather than “go,” however, Baffert's inclination is to “stay” at Del Mar for the $500,000, Grade 1, 1 1/4-mile TVG Pacific Classic on August 22. Even though there figure to be pressures, subtle and unsubtle, to exercise other options. The Woodward Stakes at Saratoga is the same purse and distance as the Pacific Classic two weeks later on the calendar.

“The Pacific Classic or the Woodward, depending ….but I like the Pacific Classic,” Baffert said. “He brings his racetrack with him. He's got a lot of will to win, he's courageous and a smart horse. There's just something about him, he's got a lot of will to win. He's got a lot of W's by his name and there's a reason for that.”

John Shirreffs, trainer of Midcourt, said his 5-year-old gelding showed no ill effects from a fully game try for a sixth victory in 12 starts.

“We are, of course, very proud of his race,” Shirreffs said via text. “It was a flip of a coin who would  hit the wire with his head down.” There are no immediate plans regarding a next race.

‘You’ve Got To Run When You’re Ready’: Higher Power Takes On Maximum Security In San Diego

Trainer John Sadler has saddled the winner of the last three runnings of the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. A fourth would appear to be a tough task considering the intimidating record and presence of rival Maximum Security.

But Sadler, and his major client Hronis Racing, are hardly ones to be intimidated. And there's recent history on their side.

“Maximum Security is one of the best horses in the world,” Sadler said. “But you've got to run when you're ready, and we're ready right now.”

Sadler has entered TVG Pacific Classic defending champion Higher Power for the Grade II $150,000 San Diego, a 1 1/16-mile main track event that is the primary stepping stone to the Classic. His 5 ¼-length convincing Pacific Classic victory was the highlight of a 2019 campaign as a 4-year-old in which the son of Medaglia d'Oro won three times and compiled earnings of more than $1.2 million for Hronis.

Higher Power opened 2020 with a last-place finish of 10 as the favorite in the Pegasus World Cup in January at Gulfstream Park, then went unraced until a runner-up finish, beaten 3 ¼ lengths by Improbable, in the Hollywood Gold Cup on June 6 at Santa Anita.

“We were very happy with it,” Sadler said. “It was a very good second, coming as it did off a really extended layoff because of travel and COVID. We brought him down here where he's run well before and plan to run him twice – the San Diego and the Pacific Classic.”

Sadler and Hronis also have Combatant, a 5-year-old son of Scat Daddy who is also entered in Sunday's Grade II, $200,000 Eddie Read Stakes on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Combatant won the Grade I Santa Anita Handicap on March 7 in his second start for Sadler after previously being based in the Midwest with Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. A venture to Hot Springs, Ark., in May for the Oaklawn Handicap produced only an 11th place finish in a field of 13. Combatant, generally a come-from-behind type, has four wins from 25 lifetime starts and earnings of $1,033,998. One victory, and $294,740 in earnings, came from turf races.

“He got cut off and generally had a bad trip at Oaklawn, so we've given him time off,” Sadler said. “Even if I go with him on the grass instead of the San Diego he's still a candidate for the Pacific Classic.”

Catalina Cruiser secured victories in the San Diego Handicap for Sadler, carrying Hronis colors, in 2018-19. In 2017 eventual champion Accelerate did the honors. Accelerate's victory was over the Bob Baffert-trained Arrogate, then the No. 1 ranked horse in the world. Arrogate finished fourth, beaten 15 lengths. Baffert will saddle Maximum Security on Saturday.

The San Diego Handicap, planned for July 18, was rescheduled a week later due to COVID-19 and post positions were re-drawn. It made no difference for Higher Power.

“They drew the race twice and I got the rail both times,” Sadler said. “The post is not my favorite, but we'll live with it.”

The field from the rail: Higher Power (Flavien Prat); Ax Man (Mike Smith); Sharp Samurai (Jorge Velez); Combatant (Drayden Van Dyke); Maximum Security (Abel Cedillo), and Midcourt (Victor Espinoza).

Prat's agent, Derek Lawson, was asked how he felt about going up against Maximum Security with Higher Power. “The same as I felt going up against Maximum Security with Country House in the Kentucky Derby,” Prat said.

Racing fans know how that turned out.
