By My Standards Joins Clark Probables Following Friday Work

Allied Racing Stable's multiple graded stakes winner By My Standards is probable to enter next Friday's $500,000 Grade 1 Clark presented by Norton Healthcare following a half-mile move in :49.40 Friday at Churchill Downs.

Also donning the Friday morning work tab was Rupp Racing's three-time Grade 3 winner Owendale who worked an easy half-mile in :49.20 for trainer Brad Cox.

On Friday morning, trainer Bret Calhoun reported via text that By My Standards, the recent eighth-place runner in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic, would likely be his lone entrant to the 1 1/8-mile race.

The Clark is the centerpiece of a fantastic Thanksgiving week of racing beneath the Twin Spires. Inaugurated in 1875, the Clark will be the featured race on the Friday program at Churchill Downs. Entries will be taken Sunday. The likely entrants to the race include Bodexpress, By My Standards, Code of Honor, In Love (BRZ) and Plus Que Parfait. Coastal Defense and Mr. Freeze are possible to enter the race, according to trainer Dale Romans.

One day prior on Thanksgiving will be the 105th running of the $200,000 Falls City (GII) for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles. Entries for Thursday's card will be drawn Saturday.

On Saturday, Nov. 28, the card will feature all 2-year-olds races for “Stars of Tomorrow II.” The headlining races will be the 94th running of the $200,000 G2 Kentucky Jockey Club and its counterpart for fillies, the $200,000 G2 Golden Rod.

The likely field for the Kentucky Jockey Club includes Arabian Prince (trainer Dallas Stewart), Inspector Frost (Brad Cox), King Fury (Kenny McPeek), Super Stock (Steve Asmussen) and Swill (Cox).

The likely field for the Golden Rod includes Coach (Cox), Lady Traveler (Dale Romans), Roc's Princess (Billy Gowan), Simply Ravishing (McPeek) and Travel Column (Cox).

Entries for Saturday's program will be drawn Wednesday.

Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no turf racing at Churchill Downs through the remainder of the meet because the course has not satisfactorily responded to this fall's climate. Grass racing will resume next spring when the conditions become more optimum. As a result, there will be no turf entries taken for races scheduled to be run on turf from Nov. 25-29. All scheduled turf races in the condition book during this time period will be transferred to the main track and entries taken for the same conditions will be dirt only. Additionally, the $100,000 G3 Cardinal and $100,000 G3 River City will be put on hiatus this year.

By My Standards (Goldencents) worked a half-mile in :49.40 (42/67) at Churchill Downs Friday morning and is a probable starter for next Friday’s GI Clark H., trainer Bret Calhoun told the Churchill press office via text.

Owned by Chester Thomas’s Allied Racing Stable, the 4-year-old was a non-factor eighth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland Nov. 7, but prior to that posted a facile 1 3/4-length victory in the GII Alysheba S. beneath the Twin Spires Sept. 4. He defeated Owendale (Into Mischief) on that occasion and that fellow 4-year-old is also on track for a Clark appearance.

The centerpiece of the fall meet at Churchill also figures to attract New York raider Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}), Bodexpress (Bodemeister) and Mr. Freeze (To Honor and Serve) among others.

Bodexpress Joins List Of Clark Probables Alongside Code Of Honor, Mr Freeze, Owendale

Top Racing LLC, Global Thoroughbred and GDS Racing Stable's multiple graded stakes placed colt Bodexpress has added his name to the expanding lineup for next Friday's Grade 1, $500,000 Clark presented by Norton Healthcare, according to trainer Gustavo Delgado's assistant and son Gustavo Delgado Jr.

Bodexpress, a three-time winner, finished 13th in the G1 2019 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve. The colt drew notoriety following his 71-1 runner-up effort behind Maximum Security in the G1 $1 million Florida Derby. While still a maiden, Bodexpress drew in off the also-eligible list to run in the Kentucky Derby. Most recently, the 4-year-old son of Bodemeister dominated a 1 1/16-mile allowance event at Gulfstream Park West by 11 ¼ lengths.

Other top older horses expected to enter the Clark include W.S. Farish's multiple G1winner Code of Honor; Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister's 2019 Clark third-place finisher Mr Freeze; and Rupp Racing's three-time G3 victor Owendale.

Entries for the Clark will be taken Sunday. Additional horses that could join the field, according to Churchill Downs assistant racing secretary and stakes coordinator Dan Bork: Albaugh Family Stables LLC and Helen K. Groves Revocable Trust's two-time winner Coastal Defense; Bonne Chance Farm, LLC and Stud R D I LLC.'s recent Keeneland turf allowance winner In Love (BRZ); and Imperial Racing's 2019 UAE Derby (GII) winner Plus Que Parfait.

Trainer Bret Calhoun reported he nominated multiple graded stakes winners By My Standards and Mr. Money to the Clark. They are expected to work Friday and could enter the race.

Code Of Honor, Mr Freeze Top Early Probables For Clark

The marquee race of the 2020 Fall Meet is the Grade I, $500,000 Clark presented by Norton Healthcare on Friday, Nov. 27. Nominations for the 1 1/8-mile race are due Saturday but several horses are ramping up their preparation for the race including two-time Grade I winner Code of Honor and multiple graded stakes winners Mr Freeze and Owendale.

The Clark is one of six graded stakes events that are staged on closing week of the Fall Meet at Churchill Downs:

· Thursday, Nov. 26:

o $200,000 Falls City (GII) for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles

o $100,000 Cardinal (GIII) for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles on turf

· Friday, Nov. 27:

o $500,000 Clark presented by Norton Healthcare for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles

o $100,000 River City (GIII) for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles on turf

· Saturday, Nov. 28:

o $200,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (GII) for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles

o $200,000 Golden Rod (GII) for 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles

“This year the Clark is only three weeks removed from the Breeders' Cup because of the way the calendar fell but Mr Freeze just looks phenomenal after the Dirt Mile,” trainer Dale Romans said.

Mr Freeze finished sixth in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (GI) and was defeated 5 ¾ lengths by front-running Knicks Go. Finishing just ahead of Mr Freeze in the race was the six-time winner Owendale. The Into Mischief colt was the runner-up in last year's edition of the Clark behind Tom's d'Etat.

One of the other early top contenders for the Clark is Bill Farish's two-time Grade I winner Code of Honor. Based at Belmont Park with trainer Shug McGaughey, Code of Honor most recently finished second behind Complexity in the one-mile $150,000 Kelso (GII). Code of Honor was a top 3-year-old in 2019 after recording victories in the $1.25 million Travers (GI), $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (GI) and $250,000 Dwyer (GIII). The homebred son of Noble Mission finished second in the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (GI) behind Country House.
