Thoroughbred Charities Of America To Honor Jen Roytz, Our Mims Retirement Haven

Thoroughbred Charities of America will honor Jen Roytz with the Allaire du Pont Leadership Award and Our Mims Retirement Haven with the Ellen and Herb Moelis Industry Service Award at the 32nd Annual Stallion Season Auction 'Tis the Season Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at Grand Reserve in Lexington, Ky.

The Allaire du Pont Leadership Award is presented annually to an organization or individual whose philanthropic endeavors are consistent with TCA's mission. Past award winners include LNJ Foxwoods, Dan Rosenberg, Barbara Banke, Bourbon Lane Stable, Graham and Anita Motion, Frank Stronach, Fasig-Tipton, Darley, Todd Pletcher, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and Madeline Auerbach.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Jen Roytz is a marketing and communications specialist based in Central Kentucky with a professional background in Thoroughbred racing, breeding and aftercare. Over the past 10 years, Roytz served in the capacities of board member, marketing consultant, and executive director of the Retired Racehorse Project. Roytz is a partner in Topline Communications and was previously marketing director for Three Chimneys Farm. Roytz is a passionate advocate for Thoroughbred aftercare and regularly speaks on the topic at both the national and local levels. She and her husband, Dr. Stuart Brown, own and operate Brownstead Farm, a breeding, sales, racing and sport horse facility in Versailles, KY. Her dedication to the well-being of Thoroughbreds during and after their racing careers exemplify the spirit of the Allaire du Pont Leadership Award.

The Ellen and Herb Moelis Industry Service Award is presented annually to an organization that works to uphold TCA's mission. Past award winners include the TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program, Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare, Backstretch Employee Service Team (B.E.S.T.), The Jockey Club's Thoroughbred Incentive Program, CANTER USA, Retired Racehorse Project, Belmont Child Care Association, Old Friends, and New York Race Track Chaplaincy.

Founded in 2007 by Jeanne Mirabito, Our Mims Retirement Haven is the only Thoroughbred aftercare organization in the U.S. dedicated solely to caring for retired broodmares. The organization's namesake is the 1977 Champion Three-Year Old filly who Mirabito adopted in 1997. As a tribute to the mare, Our Mims Retirement Haven was created to help many more broodmares at the conclusion of their breeding careers. Sadly, in 2020, Mirabito passed away however her husband, Pete Mirabito, and the organization's board of directors proudly carry on the organization's vision and mission.

The Stallion Season Auction opens with an online auction of stallion seasons at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 5 and continues through 4:30 p.m. EST on Friday, January 7. Over 150 seasons will be available in the online auction including Audible, Basin, Candy Ride, McKinzie, More Than Ready, Speightstown, and Volatile. A full list of seasons is available here.

Most of the seasons will sell during the online auction however select seasons to Bolt d'Oro, Charlatan, City of Light, Constitution, Liam's Map, Maxfield (with 2023 breed back), Nyquist (with 2023 breed back), Quality Road, and Yaupon (with 2023 breed back) will be sold at the 'Tis the Seasons Celebration on Sunday, January 9. Bidders or their authorized agents may bid on select seasons by attending the event in-person or they may email ecrady@tca.org to register to bid online. Non-season items including a John Deere Gator, accommodations at the Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa “tree house”, a wall box and stall webbing from Charlie Whittingham's barn, and more will also be offered in the live auction. An online silent auction of non-season items including halters worn by Life is Good, Curlin, Charlatan, Tapit, Knicks Go and more will be offered. A list of silent auction items is available here. More items will be added.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Winner, Our Mims Retirement Haven Resident Elmhurst Dies At Age 31

Our Mims Retirement Haven in Paris, Ky., mourns the loss of 31-year-old, Elmhurst (1990, Wild Again x Mimbet), grandson of Our Mims. Elmhurst left this earth on Jan. 4 due to heart failure.

Elmhurst raced 51 times with eight wins, 10 seconds and six third-place finishes, winning a total of $1,100,567. His most notable win was the 1997 Breeders' Cup Sprint.

He arrived at “The Haven” on Nov. 1, 2011. He quickly became a favorite of not only the ladies of Our Mims Retirement Haven, but also the people who came to visit. Since he was born on Feb. 14, he was crowned the King of Hearts and was notorious for his antics with women. He had been known to pop bra straps. If he saw cleavage, he would pull the shirt out and look down.

OMRH owner and president Pete Mirabito commented, “Thank you 'Elmo' for filling my wife Jeanne's heart with joy.”

“Mo was truly one of a kind,” said Ann Cheek, OMRH vice president. “A real ladies' man. I will miss his flirty ways and sweet whisper nickers.”

Sidna Madden, director of development noted, “Elmhurst was an amazing guy – a true gentleman that embodied everything I love about Thoroughbreds. He proudly helped carry the name of the Haven in memory of his granddam, Our Mims. I will certainly miss his antics, along with his loving spirit too, but it brings a smile to my face knowing he and Jeanne, along with Our Mims and all the other ladies of the Haven that have gone before him, are now all reunited. His longevity is also a true testament to the care that all of the horses at the Haven receive.”

After being cremated, Elmhurst will be laid to rest in the farm's Invincible Spirit cemetery.

UK Ag Equine Students Give Back To Equine Community During Inaugural Equine Week of Service

University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment's Equine Programs put on its first Equine Week of Service Sept. 28-Oct. 3. Armed with sanitizer, masks and the desire to give back to the equine industry, students in a leadership program, the Wildcat Wranglers, created and implemented this week of service to give students a chance to get some hands-on experience they may be missing this semester.

“We put together the UK Equine Week of Service as a way to get out into the community, out of the classroom and off our computers during a time where we are not getting as much hands-on experience as we usually would,” said Mackenzie Johnson, a Wildcat Wrangler and UK senior studying equine science and management. “We wanted to give our students a chance to get involved in the equine industry and start making those vital connections with different industry professionals, all while doing a few good deeds along the way.”

Students, faculty, staff and alumni donated around 550 hours of volunteer time to seven local equine organizations in the Lexington area including Blue Grass Farms Charities, Central Kentucky Riding for Hope, Kentucky Equine Adoption Center, Kentucky Horse Park, New Vocations, Our Mims Retirement Haven and the Secretariat Center. Students comprised 86 percent of the volunteers.

Students in the Wildcat Wranglers coordinated volunteers and promoted the service event via social media.

Grace Camp, a UK equine science and management senior, said she feels the event was a good way to get involved off campus.

“I wanted to sign up for the UK Equine Week of Service to help give back to the amazing equine organizations here in Central Kentucky. Also, with my classes being mostly online, I thought this would be a great way to get out of my house and make a difference,” Camp said.

Anne Boggess, a UK undergraduate student who volunteered at the Kentucky Horse Park, said it was beneficial to connect the different communities through service work.

“I think the week of service is important, because it connects so many different communities in a time where everyone is trying to find a new normal. The week put good people together with a goal of doing good work for wonderful organizations,” Boggess said.

According to Kristen Wilson, academic coordinator in UK Ag Equine Programs and advisor of the Wildcat Wranglers, the inaugural event was successful and hopefully helped equine organizations in their day-to-day functions.

“One of the goals of our Wildcat Wrangler student leadership team is to build community among our equine students. The UK Equine Week of Service is such a great way for our students to serve our local equine community in an event lead by our Wildcat Wrangler team. It has been so much fun to work with them as the team's advisor and seeing their vision become a reality,” Wilson said.

James MacLeod, director of UK Ag Equine Programs, echoed her sentiments, adding that he hopes it will become an annual tradition.

“We can all be proud of everything the students have accomplished. The broad participation and enthusiasm are wonderful, with both the host organizations and the volunteers living the commitment to be the change you wish to see in the world,” MacLeod said.

This event was supported by local equine industry organizations. Additionally, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital provided hand sanitizer to the participating organizations and volunteers.
