German 1000 Guineas The Focus On Sunday

All eyes are already on Royal Ascot, but before that catalogue of high-class encounters unfolds there is Classic action on Sunday with Dusseldorf hosting the G2 Wempe 102nd German 1000 Guineas. Tried in the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen, or German 2000 Guineas, Gestut Karlshof's Apr. 24 G3 Dr Busch-Memorial winner Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}) was disappointing when only eighth in that May 22 Cologne feature and is back among her own sex with a point to prove. That will not be easy against the British raiders Jumbly (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and Fast Attack (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), with the latter making her seasonal debut having last been seen winning the G3 Oh So Sharp S. at Newmarket in October.

Fabre Takes Aim

At ParisLongchamp, the 10-furlong G3 La Coupe sees some usual suspects and one not so much in the Wertheimers' progressive Kertez (GB) (Intello {Ger}), who is unbeaten in three starts at Saint-Cloud for the Andre Fabre yard in 2022. Fabre also pitches Juddmonte's 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) back into action in the card's Listed Prix Melisande over the same trip, with hope that the extra distance will prompt a revival of the sort of form that saw her inflict a heavy defeat on Welwal (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}) at Chantilly in September. In the Listed Prix Volterra also for fillies over a mile, the maestro of Chantilly unleashes Godolphin's unbeaten Sun Flare (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) who like Kertez has been confined to Saint-Cloud so far this term and she has to deal with Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani's 'TDN Rising Star' Osmose (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) from the Rouget stable.

Thursday Previews: More Fabre-Peslier Magic on Thursday?

First it was Agave, then Dreamflight and now Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) as the Andre Fabre-Olivier Peslier link-up continues apace in the new season. Al Wasmiyah Farm's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine returns in the seven-furlong G3 Prix Imprudence at Deauville, a key trial for the upcoming mile Classics last won by a subsequent 1000 Guineas heroine in Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}) in 2008 and in 2015 by the eventual G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches scorer Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Peslier is on record as saying that he likes to continue his partnerships with certain horses and in the absence of a full-time stable jockey, Fabre seems keen to employ his expertise and experience this term.

Zellie's opponents include Everest Racing, David Redvers and Barbara Keller's G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner-up Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani's  'TDN Rising Star' Osmose (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}), who has a mighty step up to make but is an unexposed Rouget representative. Enough said.

While the G3 Prix Djebel lacks the clout of the Imprudence, Team Calas's unbeaten Rock Boy (Fr) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) comes away from the provinces to test his mettle against hardened colts with sights set on the Poule d'Essai des Poulains.

Zoffany Filly Earns TDN Rising Star Tag at Deauville

Carrying Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani's second strip for Tuesday's Prix Le Cyrano at Deauville, 2-year-old filly Osmose (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) was very much the lead violin coming home and powered to 'TDN Rising Stardom' with a taking performance in the 6 1/2-furlong debutantes' heat. The well-backed 2-1 favourite was sharply into stride and stalked the pace in third through halfway. Looming large full of run passing the quarter-mile marker, she seized control with 300 metres remaining and powered clear in hand inside the final furlong to easily outpoint Enfant Rouge (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}) by a geared-down two lengths.

“She broke alertly and was a bit keen in the early strides, but I was able to get some cover and she relaxed beautifully,” said winning rider Cristian Demuro. “She quickened nicely when I took her out with 2 1/2 furlongs to go and, when she found her best stride, she was very impressive.  She needs more experience, but will get that with racing and she should stay the one-mile trip easily.”

Osmose is the second of four foals and first winner produced by an unraced half-sister to MGISW dual US champion Unique Bella (Tapit), whose three elite-level victories came in the GI La Brea S., GI Clement L. Hirsch S. and GI Beholder Mile. The March-foaled homebred bay's second dam is GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic heroine Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), herself a daughter of GII Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup H. and GII Princess S. victrix Queenie Belle (Bertrando). Osmose is half to a yearling filly by Showcasing (GB) and a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB).
