Galiway Colt Tops Finał Day of Osarus

The stock of Galiway continues to be on the rise and his son from MM Stud, out of the winning Exceed And Excel (Aus) mare Exceedingly Diva (GB) (lot 136), topped the Osarus Yearling Sale as it concluded its run at La Teste de Buch.

Bought for €41,000 by Pegasus Bloodstock, the colt is from the family of Sarayir, the half-sister to Nashwan, Unfuwain and Nayef who made her own mark on the breed as the dam of 1,000 Guineas winner Ghanaati.

A Kendagent (Fr) half-sister to G3 Prix du Bois winner Cosachope (Fr) (Soave {Ger})  (lot 146) was signed for by Laurent Benoit on behalf of Capucines Bloodstock for €40,000 and was the leading filly on a day when trade picked up a little on the opening session.

A larger catalogue this year saw 224 horses pass through the ring over the two days, with 144 sold (64%) for a total of €1,423,950. The average price of €11,069 was largely on a par with last year's trade, while the median dropped by 10% to €9,000.

Haras des Faunes, which consigned the Kendargent filly, was the sale's leading consignor with 23 horses sold for €291,500. Marseille-based trainer Christophe Escuder was the leading buyer after signing for 11 yearlings.

Steady Start to Osarus September

The next round of yearling sales is currently taking place in La Teste de Buch near Bordeaux, with the two-day Osarus September Yearling Sale having got underway on Monday.

This auction has been in steady decline in recent years and that appears to have continued through the first session, which recorded a clearance rate of 58%, with 67 of the 115 yearlings offered finding new homes for total sales of €627,750.

Few will have made much profit along the way, with an average price of €10,425 and median of €9,000, both of which were slightly down on last year's opening day trade.

The session was jointly led by a colt from the first crop of Sumbe's G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde (Ire) and a filly by Goken (Fr), each of whom sold for €30,000. The former, consigned by Elevage de Traou Land, was bought by Equos Racing International, while Haras de la Haie Neuve's daughter of Goken out of the treble winner Terra Nova (Fr) (American Post {GB}) was picked up by Katie McGivern of Derryconnor Stud.

This sale has been a happy hunting ground for the breeze-up sector, with the Group 1 winner Sands Of Mali (Fr) its most notable graduate. Con Marnane bought that son of Panis back in 2016, and he was back in action on Monday, signing for a pair of colts by Romanised (Ire) and Yafta (GB).

Nick Bradley also selected a yearling filly by Yafta, a son of Dark Angel standing at Haras de la Haie Neuve, and the syndicator added a filly by France's leading first-season sire of 2023, City Light (Fr), to his list of purchases.

Pau-based trainer Simone Brogi is currently the leading buyer, with four yearlings purchased on the first day and, as ever, Alain Chopard's Haras des Faunes played a leading role on the vendors' table, with 11 sold so far for €119,000.

Star Graduate Sands Of Mali Looms Large in Osarus Catalogue

Osarus has released the catalogue for its September Yearling Sale, which is to be held at La Teste de Buch racecourse on September 11 and 12.

The 236 yearlings catalogued across the two days include one from the first crop of Sands Of Mali (Fr), who is arguably the most celebrated graduate of the sale, having been bought at Osarus in 2016 by Con Marnane. The winner of the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint among his four group wins, Sands Of Mali is now at Ballyhane Stud in Ireland. His entry in the sale is lot 7, consigned by Haras des Loges, a half-sister to the Listed-placed Pacifica (Fr) (Red Jazz), while the stallion's family is also represented by Sands Of Mali's half-brother by Gutaifan (Ire). Lot 192 is one of 25 yearlings by Gutaifan, who now stands at Alain Chopard's Haras des Faunes.

Haras de Maulepaire consigns two first-crop yearlings by the Meon Valley Stud-bred G2 Dante S. winner Telecaster (GB), who is resident at Maulepaire's sister stud Haras du Mesnil. They include lot 53, a colt out of Subprime (Fr), a four-time winner by fellow Mesnil stallion Doctor Dino (Fr).

Also catalogued are two daughters of the popular Aga Khan Studs stallion Zarak (Fr), including lot 96, who is out of a full-sister to the G1 Preis von Europa winner Baila Me (Ger) (Samum {Ger}).
