Original Prevails In Manila Stakes on Belmont Turf

Eric Fein's Original picked up his first stakes win in Sunday's $100,000 Manila, holding off a furious late rally from Public Sector in the one-mile Widener turf test for sophomores at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The graded stakes-placed Quality Road colt turned the tables on his rival Sunday after fading to third last out when Public Sector prevailed in a one-mile optional-claiming event contested over yielding turf on June 4 at Belmont.

With Luis Saez up once more in the seventh renewal of the Manila, Original broke alertly from post 4 and made all the running, holding off even-money favorite Public Sector's late run to secure a narrow head score.

“I saw him [Public Sector] coming,” said Original trainer John Terranova. “But Luis rode him beautiful and had a little clearance coming to the top of the stretch and was able to hold on.”

Original set splits of :24.85, :50.30, and 1:14.44 over a turf course rated good with It's a Gamble stalking from second position outside of Hot Blooded and a hard-held Straw Into Gold riding the hedge in fourth.

Public Sector, who settled in fifth after the break under Flavien Prat, tipped outside of Hot Blooded and the fading It's a Gamble late in the turn as Straw Into Gold launched his bid up the rail. But there was no reeling in Original, who stayed on stubbornly to secure the win in a final time of 1:37.75.

Public Sector completed the exacta by 1 1/2-lengths over Straw Into Gold. Rounding out the order of finish were It's a Gamble, the slow-starting Annex, and Hot Blooded.

Like the King, who ran second in Saturday's Grade 3 Kent at Delaware Park; and Ridin With Biden, who will race in Monday's $250,000 Grade 3 Dwyer at one-mile on Big Sandy, were scratched.

A maiden winner at second asking over yielding Aqueduct Racetrack turf in November, Original ran third in the Grade 3 Kitten's Joy in January at Gulfstream Park and followed with a third in the Woodhaven in April at the Big A.

The victory marked the second stakes win of the meet for Terranova, who said he felt confident throughout.

“I knew we were going easy. The fractions were slow but the turf is very soft, so I didn't expect too fast fractions,” said Terranova. “They let him out there easy. The only thing we talked to Luis about was if they came to us at the quarter-pole, to kick away a little, because they're going to be kicking down the stretch. We wanted to get a little clear from there, which he did, and it worked out beautiful.”

Saez said his charge was touting himself on the way to the gate.

“Today, I knew I had horse. When I took him away from the pony I could feel it. He was ready. He was on his game today,” said Saez. “He was the speed of the race and he did his thing. He broke pretty well and set the pace. When we came into the top of the stretch, I had a lot of horse, and he came and gave me a fight in the last few jumps. It was an exciting race.”

Bred in Kentucky by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, Original banked $55,000 in victory while improving his record to 7-2-0-3. He returned $15.80 for a $2 win ticket.

Live racing resumes Monday at Belmont with a nine-race card highlighted by the $150,000 Grand Couturier in Race 6 and the Grade 3, $250,000 Dwyer in Race 8. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Annex Adds Blinkers for Penn Mile

'TDN Rising Star' Annex (Constitution), a disappointing eighth as the favorite in the GII American Turf S. at Churchill Downs May 1, adds blinkers for Friday evening's GII Penn Mile S. at Penn National. The chestnut was perfect in his previous three trips to the post, including narrow wins in the Palm Beach S. Feb. 27 and Cutler Bay S. Mar. 27.

The speedy Original (Quality Road) collected third in his previous two attempts in the GIII Kitten's Joy S. Jan. 30 and Woodhaven S. Apr. 17. He will be on the engine from his inside draw with Hall of Famer John Velazquez riding.

Chess's Dream (Jess's Dream), winner of the Kitten's Joy and third-place finisher in the Palm Beach, was seventh at 20-1 in the American Turf.

Trainer Wesley Ward told Daily Racing Form that 8-5 morning-line favorite and last term's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf third Outadore (Outwork) would be scratched in favor of Sunday's Paradise Creek S. at Belmont Park.

Outadore Installed As Morning LIne Favorite For Friday’s Penn Mile

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course announced Monday that a field of seven horses has been entered for the eighth running of the $300,000 Penn Mile (G2) for 3-year-olds going one mile on the turf to be run on Friday, May 28.

Post time for the 11-race card is 6 P.M. EST with the Penn Mile set as the fourth race scheduled for approximately 7:45 P.M. as the final leg of an “All Stakes – All Turf Pick 4.” The Pick 4 will kick off with two $100,000 stakes for Pennsylvania-breds followed by the $100,000 Penn Oaks for 3-year-old fillies going one mile on the turf.

Also featured on the evening card is a mandatory payout of the Hollywood High 5 carryover in race 7 which currently stands at over $216,000 as of Friday, May 21

Breeze Easy, LLC's Outadore, trained by Wesley Ward, was installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite for the Penn Mile. A winner in his last race in the Animal Kingdom Stakes at Turfway Park on the synthetic surface, Outadore will switch back to the turf for Friday's featured race. Twice a winner on the turf as a two-year-old, Outadore also finished third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Keeneland last fall. Irad Ortiz, Jr., Eclipse Award winner as the top rider in North America for three consecutive years and winner of the 2017 Penn Mile aboard Frostmourne, is scheduled to ride.

Hall of Famer conditioner Bill Mott will saddle 9-5 morning line second choice Annex for owners LNJ Foxwoods and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. A winner of his first three lifetime starts including the Cutlers Bay and Palm Beach stakes at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, Annex finished eighth, beaten only five and half lengths, as the favorite in the Grade 2 American Turf run at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby day race card. Jockey Junior Alvarado has the mount.

The Mike Maker trained Chess's Dream, owned by Michael Dubb, Steven Bouchey, Bethlehem Stables LLC and Chester A. Bishop, also last raced in the American Turf checking in seventh. Chess's Dream was victorious in the Kitten's Joy (G3) at Gulfstream Park in January and will be ridden by jockey Kendrick Carmouche on Friday.

Hall of Famer and recent Kentucky Derby winning jockey John Velazquez will be aboard Eric Fein's Original. Trained by John Terranova II, Original placed third in his last two starts – the Woodhaven Stakes at Aqueduct and the aforementioned Kitten's Joy won by Chess's Dream.

Rounding out the field is Godolphin, LLC's Gershwin, trained by Michael Stidham and ridden by Joe Bravo, J Park Racing, LLC and Delia Nash's Sibelius, trained by Jeremiah O'Dwyer and ridden by Sheldon Russell, and Kernan E Morris, Jr. and Jagger Inc.'s The King Cheek, trained by Jamie Ness and ridden by Jaime Rodriguez.

After only seven previous editions the Grade 2 Penn Mile has quickly become one of the top turf events of the year for the 3-year-old division earning Grade 3 status after just three runnings and moving up to Grade 2 status after just four renewals. In its short history, prior Penn Mile winners include Breeders' Cup champion Bobby's Kitten as well as Grade 1 winners Catch a Glimpse and Force the Pass in its short history.

COLTS FROM FLAMBOYANT FAMILIES READY TO SHINE

8th-BEL, 63K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, post time: 4:47 p.m. EDT

A $470,000 Keeneland September yearling for the partnership of Peter Brant and Robert LaPenta, Chad Brown’s MILES D (Curlin) is the first foal of an unraced Bernardini mare who hails from the exceptional Personal Ensign (Private Account)’s immediate family. That Broodmare of the Year’s Breeders’ Cup-winning and -producing daughter My Flag (Easy Goer) is Miles D’s granddam. The depth of this family seems limitless, but the graded winners in the last two years alone descending from My Flag’s daughters include Teresa Z (Smart Strike) and Performer (Speightstown). Including all the stars that trace to Personal Ensign would be an exercise in awe. Miles D will have to work for the win though, as hailing from the barn of John Terranova for Eric Fein is Original (Quality Road), whose unraced Empire Maker dam is a half-sister to GSWs Statuette (Pancho Villa), Academy Award (Secretariat), and Good Mood (Devil’s Bag). No fewer than 40 black-type performers descend from Original’s prolific granddam, Mine Only (Mr. Prospector), highlighted by GISWs Golden Ticket (Speightstown), Leofric (Candy Ride {Arg}), Well Chosen (Deputy Minister), and Telling (A.P. Indy). Original himself brought $425,000 at the OBS Spring sale after working two furlongs in :21 1/5. Speaker’s Corner (Street Sense) is a Godolphin homebred who is liable to improve as a second-timer for Bill Mott with an added furlong. His unraced dam is a Bernardini daughter of GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff and GI Acorn S. winner Round Pond (Awesome Again), who also produced Dubai Group 1 winner Long River (A.P. Indy).

FILLY OUT OF TWO GENERATIONS OF CANADIAN CHAMPIONS DEBUTS AGAINST COLTS

5th-WO, 126.8K, Msw, 2yo, 1m70y (AWT), post time: 3:29 p.m. EDT

Mark Casse unveils filly CURLIN’S CATCH (Curlin) against the boys. She’s a runaway winner on pedigree, as her dam is Catch the Thrill (A.P. Indy), Canada’s champion 2-year-old filly of 2006 and already producer of stakes horse Chic Thrill (Smart Strike). Granddam Catch the Ring (Seeking the Gold) was likewise a Canadian champion and third dam Radiant Ring (Halo) was a GSW & GISP in the U.S. before being named Canada’s 2003 Outstanding Broodmare. Curlin’s Catch has been working well over the all-weather surface here, including a bullet :46 2/5 four panels (1/22) Sept. 16 and a more-recent :59 4/5 five furlongs (4/14) Oct. 1. Breeze Easy LLC picked her up for $430,000 at the OBS Spring sale after the filly worked a furlong in a sharp :10 1/5.
