Gold Cup Hero Kyprios Set for Goodwood as O’Brien Readies Strong Squad

Aidan O'Brien is readying a strong squad for Goodwood, which will be spearheaded by Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

Kyprios is a warm order to build on his G1 Gold Cup triumph at Royal Ascot when he lines out in the G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup while Order Of Australia is on course to run in the G1 Qatar Sussex S.

O'Brien said, “We are happy with Kyprios and the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup has always been the plan since Ascot.

“The plan is for Order Of Australia to run in the Sussex S., provided everything goes well between now and then. He has come out of the Curragh well.”

O'Brien has a number of high-class entries across the week, with Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) set to tackle Thursday's G1 Qatar Nassau S. after finishing fourth in the GI Belmont Oaks earlier in the month, while New York City (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) could move up in trip for the seven-furlong G2 World Pool Lennox S. after coming home last in the G2 Sapphire S. over the minimum trip last Saturday.

Irish Oaks fourth Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is another who could make a swift return stepping back up to 14 furlongs in the G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S.

O'Brien said, “The plan at the moment is for Concert Hall to run in the Nassau. She is just back from America and seems very well, so we are thinking of letting her take her chance.

“New York City has a couple of entries and, if he is to go anywhere, it would probably be the Lennox. We will speak to Ryan [Moore] closer to the time and see what the race looks like.

“Emily Dickinson is a possible for the Lillie Langtry. She only ran last weekend and we are just going to see how she is, but she is in good form and the trip will suit.”

O'Brien has three contenders for the G2 Japan Racing Association Vintage S., headed by last Saturday's impressive Curragh scorer Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Age Of Kings (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) was a beaten favourite in the Tyros S. on Thursday evening, with his other entry Greenland (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) yet to get his head in front.

O'Brien added, “We have not decided about the Vintage S. yet. Hans Andersen only won last weekend whereas Greenland is still a maiden and the other horse [Age Of Kings] ran at Leopardstown last night. We will decide nearer the time.

“The Vintage S. is a prestigious race and we like to have something good for it. If a horse does go to stud, it looks very good on their CV.”

Breeders’ Cup Mile Hero On Top At The Curragh

Winless in five starts since annexing last year's edition of the Curragh's G2 Romanised Minstrel S., 2020's GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Senta's Dream {GB}, by Danehill) repeated the dose with a 3 1/2-length triumph in Sunday's latest renewal of the seven-furlong contest at the Co. Kildare venue. The 5-year-old entire, who also hit the board in last term's G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin, arrived for this defence coming back off a third in last month's G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot and broke smartly to lead from flagfall. In command until bustled along when tackled by Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 4-5 favourite soon had that rival's measure and was ridden clear in the closing stages to win by a comfortable 3 1/2 lengths. Dr Kempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) kept on well to finish a half length adrift in third.

“He's a lovely horse, he has loads of speed, he's tough, genuine and hardy,” said Aidan O'Brien after notching a seventh renewal. “He ran a lovely race first time back at [Royal] Ascot this year and the plan was to come here and go on to the [G1] Sussex [at Goodwood] with him. Obviously he's a Breeders Cup Mile winner so he has plenty of class and, as he's getting older, he's getting quicker and stronger. He was working very well going to Ascot, but it was his first run [of the year] so he had to tire a little bit and that's what he did do. He's very straight forward to ride, he's very sound and we're delighted with him. The plan is to go to the Sussex and finish up at the Breeders Cup and he could go to Hong Kong and do all those races. He's at that great age now that he's seasoned, has experience, and he's quicker this year which is great. That'll be a big help in those big races.”

Sea the Stars’ Baaeed Takes The Moulin

Up in class and up against milers proven at the top level on Sunday, Shadwell's Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) went through the motions in the manner of a true professional to collect the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Sent off the 1-2 favourite having shown rare talent in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. at Newmarket July 8 and the G3 Thoroughbred S. at Goodwood July 30, the William Haggas-trained bay was sent into third early by Jim Crowley and waited outside with no threat of interference. Seizing the lead from the aggressively-ridden Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole, the homebred held Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) to score by 1 1/4 lengths, with Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal) a short neck away in third. “He's a super horse who is improving all the time and still learning,” the winning rider said. “He was idling in front and is very exciting. It's the first group 1 in Europe for Sheikha Hissa, so I'm pleased for her. He's a very easy ride and travels well and stays a mile very well.”

Maiden winners who impress on the clock as well as visually are often false dawns, but Baaeed went forward from his eye-catching debut at Leicester June 7 to register a stunning 7 1/2-length success in a Newmarket novice 12 days later. If there was any chance of a bubble bursting, it would have happened in a fiercely-competitive renewal of the July Course's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. but his answer was a four-length success as lacking in drama as it is possible to see from a lightly-raced 3-year-old so soon after his introduction to racing. That was on good-to-firm, but as the soft dried out to produce a tacky surface at the Goodwood festival he just churned out another star display when the 6 1/2-length winner of the G3 Thoroughbred S. Demanding a tilt at a race such as this in the process, the speedier and classier version of his full-brother Hukum (Ire) was just as unfazed surrounded by winners of a Breeders' Cup, a mile Classic and a super-strong Falmouth.

It was the heroine of the latter contest who broke best, but Jim Crowley was keen to close the door on Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) as Ryan Moore sent on Order of Australia and then Novemba surged by and into isolation in front. That misjudgement of pace by Bauyrzhan Murzabayev meant the G2 German 1000 Guineas winner was an irrelevance up ahead and with Baaeed sticking close to Order of Australia the tactics were already sorted out by the time the home turn was navigated. From the two to the one, the deciding factor was that the Haggas star was quicker than his Ballydoyle rival as Victor Ludorum put up his best performance in some time on a real going day.

“It looks like he was a little bit fresh today and slightly jumped on the bit as the German filly went by and he didn't have cover, but he stayed on nicely in the straight,” Maureen Haggas said. “In fact, he had a little bit of a battle which he hadn't had before so that will be good for his education. I'd imagine there will be some improvement to come, but it will be more from the learning process than physically. Now he's had a battle he might be even better. I would say the [Oct. 16 G1] Queen Elizabeth II [at Ascot] is the logical next race, but we don't want to run him on ground that is too soft so we'll see nearer the time. There is also the Breeders' Cup. He's very lightly-raced and a brand new horse really, so hopefully he might stay in training as a 4-year-old but that's up to his owners.”

Baaeed rates as the fastest group 1 winner for his illustrious sire so far, which is a surprise given that his aforementioned full-sibling Hukum has won two renewals of the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. over 13 furlongs and a G3 Silver Cup over a mile and three quarters. The dam is the Listed Prix de Liancourt winner Aghareed (Kingmambo), who is a daughter of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and GI Flower Bowl Invitational heroine Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). The fourth dam is the Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Bashayer (Mr. Prospector), a full-sister to the dual listed scorer Sarayir who is in turn responsible for the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway). Bashayer is kin to the legendary champion Nashwan and the four-times group 1-winning Nayef et al. Aghareed's unraced 2-year-old filly by Intello (Ger) is named Zaghaareed (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire) and a colt foal by Night of Thunder (Ire).

Palace Pier Faces Generation Clash at Deauville

Having missed the G1 Sussex S. due to a minor setback, Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is back in the picture as he defends his title in Sunday's G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois at Deauville. More workmanlike than impressive when last seen in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot June 15, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's TDN Rising Star has a six-pound weight-for-age gift to present to Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and will need to be at his best to contain Jim Bolger's hard-grafting 3-year-old colt miler supreme. Judged on his prior win in the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury May 15, John and Thady Gosden's 4-year-old is the one to beat even allowing for the scintillating G1 St James's Palace S. victory of his Irish challenger. John Gosden is wary of the effects of his recent problem, however. “He had a blood disorder going into Goodwood and it just took a little time to get over it. We're just finding our way back, he's worked well in towards the race but you could do without those issues coming in the middle of the season,” he said of the bay, who bids to become the first since Spinning World to win consecutive renewals in 1997. “He won the Jacques le Marois last year, but it will be different conditions this year. It's dry and warm and it's a small but elite field. Like most horses, I think he just wants good ground, they can show their acceleration on good ground and that is absolutely his favourite.”

Poetic Flare, who also took the May 1 G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, has a definite achilles heel and that is ground slower than good with his defeats this term all on rain-eased going. Brushed aside by Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the Sussex on soft July 28, he destroyed the opposition on good-to-firm in the June 15 St James's Palace and with the sun beating down on Normandy conditions can work in his favour. Gosden has maximum respect for Poetic Flare and added, “He is a huge threat, obviously, I don't think he was entirely in love with the ground at Goodwood but he's a phenomenal horse and has put in such great performances–he's the top three-year-old colt. It's a very smart race but so it should be, it's the top mile race in France.”

Provided the first two run up to their best, it is difficult to see the winner coming from elsewhere especially as last year's runner-up Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) was disappointing when turned over on her belated seasonal bow in the Listed Lyric Fillies' S. over an extended 10 furlongs at York July 23. Ballydoyle's Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) was beaten over four lengths when fifth in the Sussex and his GI Breeders' Cup Mile victory is looking a notch or two below this level.

If there is a chance of upset, it could come from Godolphin's unexposed Midtown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was third on his seasonal return in the seven-furlong G1 Prix Jean Prat here July 11. He may be the pick of the Andre Fabre-trained duo, with Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal) looking a touch exposed despite having enjoyed a confidence-boosting success in the G3 Prix Messidor at Chantilly July 18. “This has been the target for Victor Ludorum all year and it is very exciting to see him back over the straight mile at Deauville on good ground,” Godolphin's Lisa-Jane Graffard said. “It's obviously a very competitive group 1 and he will have to be at his very best, but we feel that he is. Andre couldn't be happier with Midtown's progress since the Prix Jean Prat. He has thought an awful lot of the horse since his debut last year and the only question mark is whether he is more effective on softer ground.”

Also on the card are a trio of group 3 contests, with the 10-furlong Prix Gontaut Hong Kong Jockey Club featuring Ecurie Jean-Pierre Barjon's progressive June 27 G2 Gran Premio di Milano winner Wally (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), the 12 1/2-furlong Prix Minerve hosting Ecurie Ama Zingteam's June 20 G1 Prix de Diane third Burgarita (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and the Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin for 2-year-olds over seven furlongs seeing Lars Haase's July 21 Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles winner Best Sixteen (Fr) (Penny's Picnic {Ire}) bid to continue his upward trajectory.
