Order Of Australia Retired And Will Stand In India

Breeders' Cup winner Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Senta's Dream {GB}, by Danehill) has been sold privately and will stand at Manjri Stud in India beginning in 2024 according to published reports. A fee will be announced later.

Bred by Aidan and Annemarie O'Brien's Whisperview Trading, the Coolmore partners-owned bay had been entered in the Tattersalls July Sale, but had been withdrawn. Trained by O'Brien for five seasons, the son of three-time Group/Grade 1 producer Senta's Dream won six of his 25 starts and earned over $2.25 million.

Besides his 2020 GI Breeders' Cup Mile score, he also triumphed in two editions of the G2 Minstrel S. (2021/22) and was placed in another five top-level races across England, France, and the U.S. A half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) and the late GI Belmont Oaks/Beverly D. S. heroine Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), the 6-year-old will stand alongside Group 3 winner Phoenix Tower and the Group 1-placed Fiero (Jpn).

Emblem Road Returns To Defend Title As One Of Over 1400 Entries For 2023 Saudi Cup Festival

Emblem Road (Quality Road), the victor of the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup last year, is back to defend his title, as over 1,400 nominations were received for the $35.35-million extravaganza at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh Feb. 24-25. Locally owned and trained, Emblem Road will be seen in action on Friday over 1600 metres, as a prep for the nine-furlong Saturday cornerstone in just over a month's time. If he is successful on Feb. 25, he would become the highest-earning Thoroughbred in history with over $20.2 million in prize-money.

The supporting card is also filled with sought-after prizes, with a quintet of Group 3 races for Thoroughbreds, as well as a pair of group races for Purebred Arabians on tap over the two-day festival. Multiple countries have nominated strong contingents, including Japan, America, and the UAE, as well as UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Argentina. A total of 47 top-level winners have been handed entries.

Successful in four of the six group races on last year's Saturday card, the Japanese have nominated another strong battalion to further burnish their international strike rate. Although they have yet to land the Saudi Cup, it is surely only a matter of time. Yoshito Yahagi's 2022 G1 Dubai Turf scorer Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) and Tetsuya Kimura's G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas hero Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) are both nominated. Jun Light Bolt (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) already holds a berth in the big dance after booking his ticket in the G1 Champions Cup at Chukyo in December. Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah), named the Japanese Champion Dirt Horse earlier this week, also has a Saudi Cup nom.

Godolphin's 2022 GI Breeders' Cup Turf hero Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby has signed on, as has Jane Chapple-Hyam's multiple Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), who was purchased for 3.6 million guineas by Najd Stud at the Tattersalls December Sale with the Cup in mind. GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) represents Aidan O'Brien, while Argentina's flag will be flown by Nino Guapo (Arg) (Catcher In The Rye {Ire}) for trainer Maria Munoz.

The impact of the Saudi Cup continues to expand, and Laws Of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}), who now races for Australian-based trainer Annabel Neasham, is the first Australian-trained horse to enter. He captured the G1 Prix Jean Prat during his European tenure, and has proved just as lethal Down Under, with placings in both the G1 Toorak H. and G1 George Ryder S. He exits a meritorious third in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile on Dec. 11.

The American challenge for the feature is expected to be robust and will be headed up by horses owned–completely, or in part–by Amr Zedan. Country Grammer (Tonalist), campaigned in partnership with WinStar Farm and Commonwealth, covered himself in glory last February when beaten just a half-length into second by Emblem Road, and he used the effort as a stepping stone several hundreds of miles to the east when taking out the G1 Dubai World Cup. Country Grammer ran out a facile winner of the GII San Antonio S. in his most recent appearance Dec. 26. 'TDN Rising Star' Taiba (Gun Runner) is also ticketed for King Abdulaziz, having backed up in trip to impressively win the GI Runhappy Malibu S. on the same program as the San Antonio.

Also possible to represent the red-white-and blue is Rich Strike (Keen Ice), last year's GI Kentucky Derby hero; the progressive Law Professor (Constitution) and Juddmonte's Fulsome (Into Mischief), a good third to Proxy (Tapit) and the Saudi Cup-entered West Will Power (Bernardini) in the GI Clark S. in late November.

America could field a handful of horses for the sprint races to be held on both surfaces. The in-form Sibelius (Not This Time) is among the entries for the $1.5-million G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint and could be joined by the likes of Juddmonte's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint hero Elite Power (Curlin), while the latter's stable companion Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) could get the chance to atone for his narrow runner-up effort in the G3 1351 Turf Sprint.

The most valuable undercard race is the 3000-metre G3 Red Sea Turf Cup, and it could mark the much-awaited return of G1 Gold Cup hero Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}). Other UK-trained notables are Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Trawlerman (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}).

Winners of the Dirt Sprint in 2021/22, Japan sends last year's five-length victor Dancing Prince (Jpn) (Pas De Trois {Jpn}) back to defend his title. He is not the only representation from the Land of the Rising Sun, as G3 Capella S. hero Remake (Jpn) (Lani) earned an automatic berth with his tally in last month's Group 3.

Japanese Filly Triple Tiara heroine Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) holds an entry in the 2100-metre $1.5-million G3 Neom Turf H. over 2100 metres, but she does not face an easy task, as her countryman Panthalassa is cross-entered here. Godolphin's Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) could also make some noise for Saeed bin Suroor.

Dual Group 2 winner Bathrat Leon (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), also trained by Yahagi, goes up against defending champ Songline (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) in the 1351 Turf Sprint. Charlie Appleby's Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will attempt to find the winner's circle for the first time since taking the G1 British Champions Sprint S. in 2021, but he did run a close second to stablemate Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Royal Ascot's G Platinum Jubilee S. last June.

One of the supporting races is the $1.5-million G3 Saudi Derby, won exclusively by America and Japan throughout the first three editions, each of whom could offer strength in numbers. Karl Burke's Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), the first debutante to win at Royal Ascot since 1996, is a possible runner.

Besides the main action on Feb. 25, the day prior features 14 jockeys–seven men and seven women–competing in the International Jockeys Challenge. There is also the $500,000 Saudi International H. that day, which is designated especially for horses trained in countries that are not classified as Part I by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.

Tom Ryan, Racing Advisor to the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, said, “Last year's meeting could not have been more successful, with Emblem Road making history by becoming the first Saudi Arabian-trained winner of the Saudi Cup. There was also the remarkable success of Japanese horses, who took home four group races, and the strength of the Japanese entry has continued to grow this year.

“These were results that resonated throughout the racing world and we are confident that many more memorable stories will be created again this year showcasing the highest level of horse racing.

“Once again we're delighted with the depth of the international entries, from 22 different countries across five continents, which goes to show the reputation and global standing the Saudi Cup meeting has quickly established after just three years.

“With The Obaiya Arabian Classic being promoted to Group 1 status and the Al Mneefah to Group 2 this year, we now have a Group 1 for Thoroughbreds and another for Purebred Arabians. This is a hugely proud moment for everyone at the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia.

“We look forward to welcoming horsemen and women, and horse racing fans from all over the world to Riyadh next month for what promises to be another unforgettable Saudi Cup meeting.”

Aidan O’Brien String Exits Quarantine And Steps Out At Keeneland Ahead Of The Breeders’ Cup

Tuesday marked the first day the seven-strong Aidan O'Brien string got a taste of the Keeneland track ahead of the two-day Breeders' Cup on Nov. 4-5.

Leading the Coolmore partners septet after their quarantine period was Group 1 winner Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and G3 Derby Trial S. hero Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who both line up in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf and will leave from stalls four and three, respectively. Second in the 2021 Turf to Godolphin and Charlie Appleby's Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) at Del Mar, Broome took the G2 Hardwicke S. from six starts this term and enters the Breeders' Cup having run eighth in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe last out at the beginning of October.

“Looking at the team, we have two horses in the Turf,” O'Brien said. “Broome ran very well in the race last year. Conditions have not always been in his favour, but I think he will enjoy the ground if it's quick.

“His one flaw is he misses the break. He's a late loader, but he can get on the back foot. We are trying to do things to help him break better. He broke badly at Del Mar under Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] and he rides him again. That day he gave him a chance and said he couldn't believe he got beat.

“Stone Age ran well [when fifth] in the heavy [G1 Champion S.] and is comfortable over a mile and a half, but I think there'll be no more rain this week and the going will be different for him.”

Already a Breeders' Cup winner after taking the GI Mile in 2020, Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) aims to take his second Mile. The 5-year-old entire ran second in the G1 Prix du Moulin to Dreamloper (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in September and he was third to the re-opposing Annapolis (War Front) and Ivar (Brz) (Agnes Gold {Jpn}) in the GI Coolmore Turf Mile S. over this course and distance on Oct. 8. He exits stall 10 in the 16-horse field.

“We have Order Of Australia in the Mile, going for a repeat of two years ago,” O'Brien said. “I was very happy with his run at Keeneland and he was drawn out a bit. I've taken my time with him all year and have just gently turned the screw on him and his last work was very pleasing. We bred him and still own a leg in him.”

O'Brien also has a pair of fillies entered in the GI Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf in listed winner and G1 Irish Oaks runner-up Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Cazoo Oaks victress Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Ryan Moore will be aboard Tuesday and will leave from barrier five, while Wayne Lordan has the call on Toy. The latter pair have drawn gate seven.

O'Brien said, “Tuesday is very well, she has a nice draw. It was bad ground when she ran in France [G1 Prix de l'Opera], but her work has been very good.

“Toy has made very good progress since her last race, she has a good draw and the trip and ground should be fine for her.”

Consistent filly Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), who is four-for-six, flies the flag for O'Brien in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Besides winning her first four starts in succession, including group victories in the G3 Coolmore Stud Fillies Sprint S., G3 Albany S., and the G2 Debutante S., the dark bay rolled a pair of twos in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and the G1 Cheveley Park S. both in September.

“Meditate is one I really like stepping up in trip and I think that, coupled with going round a bend, will help her,” he said. “She's a No Nay Never out of a mare by Dalakhani (Ire) and we are still learning about these No Nay Nevers who are fast, precocious horses. Meditate has plenty of stamina on the dam's side, we are still working out about what we do with her next year.

“She's never lost a kilo since her last run, we've given her the chance to back out in her work but there are no negative signs. She's also got a good mind and is a hardy filly whose constitution will also help her with the distance.”

The master of Rosegreen also saddles G3 Prix de Conde hero Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. He's drawn in stall one and will be ridden by Ryan Moore.

“Our 2-year-old colt [Victoria Road] came from a good bit back at Chantilly and we think he could develop into a [G1] French Derby horse,” O'Brien said. “The main thing is that we don't want him to get lost early in his race on Friday, but I feel it's only when he goes further that we will see him in a better light.”

O'Brien also reflected on the strong European Breeders' Cup participation, and added, “It's always good to see Charlie Appleby with his team at the Breeders' Cup. He's a very good trainer, he's doing a great job and has an adept team of horses and people to bring with him.

“We love coming to Keeneland because its weather can be similar to ours and everyone here is horsey minded, like we are in Ireland. You have to be tactically quick around here, but you need to be able to finish off your race as well.

“We will be looking at the ground, but in my opinion I prefer it quick because Flat horses should be all about speed.”

Moulin Marred By Coroebus Injury As Lope De Vega’s Dreamloper Wins

There was the kind of drama at ParisLongchamp on Sunday that nobody needs as Godolphin's 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace S. hero Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) suffered a fatal injury in early straight before Jason Fill's Dreamloper (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Livia's Dream {Ire}, by Teofilo {Ire}) ran out an impressive winner of the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. The Ed Walker-trained mare, who had also won the G1 Prix d'Ispahan here May 29, was prominently-placed throughout by Kieran Shoemark and was therefore ahead of the 21-10 favourite's fall passing two out.

Hitting the front with a furlong remaining, the 6-1 shot surged clear for an impressive 5 1/2-length success from Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}), with The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) 3/4 of a length away in third. “She's stepped up again–fair play to Kieran, we talked about the race for about four hours as it wasn't obvious what was going to happen tactically and then I just said 'do your job' and he absolutely nailed it,” Walker said. “She's not a straightforward ride, but ever since the Sun Chariot he's got on incredibly well with her and we are reaping the rewards for that. She's an eight to nine-furlong horse and I'd love to have a go at the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf–two turns and 9 1/2 furlongs would be perfect for her.”

Dreamloper's stock began to rise markedly with a 4 1/2-length defeat of the smart Freemason Lodge representative Lights On (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G3 Valiant S. over a mile at Ascot last July and it was the drop back to seven rather than a dip in her level that was to blame for a fourth placing three weeks later in Newbury's G2 Hungerford S. Only 10th in the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown in September, the bay began her fruitful partnership with Shoemark when third at 25-1 in the G1 Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket in October and it was at that track that she shone on her next start when coming back from the winter to annexe the nine-furlong G2 Dahlia S. at the start of May.

Her dynamic performance when taking the d'Ispahan over 9 1/4 furlongs led connections to point to a mile and a quarter for her next two starts, but her sixth in the G1 Pretty Polly S. at The Curragh June 26 and fifth in the G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood July 28 confirmed that she was being stretched too far. Granted an honest pace to run at here by the previously-unbeaten 3-year-old God Blessing (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), Dreamloper was in her element and when let go showed top-class miling pace to dominate. “She clearly doesn't stay ten,” Walker added. “I blamed the ground in the Pretty Polly and really fancied her for the Nassau, where she was the winner at the nine pole but ended up fifth. The gap to the Sun Chariot is perfect, but there is the ground to think about and she's been busy and had a bit of travelling, so I might just freshen her up for one last hoorah at the Breeders' Cup.”

Coroebus, who had puzzled connections with a fifth placing in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, was being angled out of a pocket by William Buick in early straight as he sustained his fatal injury and was euthanized soon after.

The Revenant showed he retains much of his ability on his comeback, posting a 11.06 penultimate furlong as he gave vain chase to the dominant winner on ground as lively as he can operate on. A repeat bid in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein back here on Arc weekend is the next port of call, with the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. as usual on his agenda. “Considering that he didn't have his favorite soft ground, I am delighted with this performance after a long break,” trainer Francis-Henri Graffard said.

Pedigree Notes:

Dreamloper's dam Livia's Dream (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), whose yearling filly by Golden Horn (GB) is catalogued in the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, enjoyed her finest hour when capturing the 12-furlong Listed Wild Flower S. She is out of the Listed Dick Hern Fillies' S. winner Brindisi (GB) (Dr Fong), whose listed-placed half-sister La Spezia (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) produced the G2 Doncaster Cup hero Thomas Hobson (GB) (Halling). Descended from Dick Hollingsworth's Oaks heroine Bireme (GB), the family features another heroine of that Epsom Classic in Talent (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), whose daughter Ambition (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) took the G2 Prix Corrida. Livia's Dream also has the unraced 2-year-old filly Dreamrocker (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}).
