After ‘False Start,’ Eagle Orb Dominates New York-Breds In Notebook

E.V. Racing Stable's Eagle Orb was anxious to get going, leaving the starting gate early in Saturday's $100,000 Notebook. But after the field re-loaded, the son of Orb settled down, tracked the early speed and finished strong for a 2 3/4-length victory in a stakes for New York-bred juveniles going six furlongs over the main track at Aqueduct in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Eagle Orb, who entered with a pair of runner-up efforts in three stakes appearances for trainer Rudy Rodriguez, was one of four entrants to burst through the gate before the official start. It was a case of no-harm, no-foul, as all seven horses were re-loaded for the start, with Eagle Orb breaking sharp from post 4.

Storm Shooter set the early speed for a tightly bunched pack, going the opening quarter-mile in 23.28 seconds over a track labeled good. Under current meet-leading rider Kendrick Carmouche, Blue Gator, the 7-5 favorite, took command with the half-mile going in 47.26 as Storm Shooter retreated to the back of the pack.

Out of the turn, jockey Manny Franco urged Eagle Orb from the outside, where he overtook Blue Gator and drew away, hitting the wire in 1:11.71 while improving to 2-2-0 in five career starts. Bred by Barry Ostrager, Eagle Orb built on runner-up efforts in Funny Cide going 6 1/2 furlongs on Sept. 4 at Saratoga Race Course and a last-out second in the one-turn mile Sleepy Hollow on Oct. 24 at Belmont Park.

“I think he's a better horse sprinting,” Franco said. “Today, he was in a nice stalking position and when I put him in position, he started going very comfortably and started opening up.”

Cutting back in distance, Eagle Orb won for the first time since a triumphant debut on Aug. 21 at the Spa. Off at 6-1, he returned $12.20 on a $2 win bet and improved his career earnings to $153,100.

“I didn't want to get involved in the speed duel early,” Franco said. “I was trying not to take my horse too far off the pace, but I didn't want to be up there. I wanted to wait behind the speed. My horse settled nice for me and when I put him in the clear, he took me there after that.”

Added Franco on the start: “The horse on the outside of us [Horn of Plenty] was kind of moving around and all the horses broke through the door, that's when it happened.”

Rodriguez praised Eagle Orb's consistent start to his career.

“This horse always shows up. I was a little disappointed why we didn't get the last two wins,” Rodriguez said. “He's been close at Saratoga and at Belmont. He was knocking at the door.”

Three Diamonds Farm's Blue Gator, a stakes winner last out in the New York Breeders' Futurity over a sloppy and sealed Finger Lakes track on Oct. 26, finished 6 1/4 lengths ahead of Market Alert for second for trainer Mike Maker.

“I didn't want him to be that close, but those horses weren't fast enough to beat my horse there, so I was just sitting as long as I could,” Carmouche said. “I asked my horse to run around the turn and at the quarter pole he quickened up, but the other horse quickened faster than me. I thought he ran his race.”

Horn of Plenty, Lookin for Trouble, Storm Shooter and Half Right completed the order of finish.

Live racing resumes on Sunday at the Big A with a 10-race card highlighted by the $100,000 Winter Memories for 3-year-old fillies in Race 9 at 3:47 p.m. Eastern and the $100,000 Key Cents for New York-bred juvenile fillies going six furlongs in Race 2 at 12:22 p.m. First post is 11:50 a.m.

War Front Leads Claiborne Farm’s 2021 Stallion Roster

The Hancock family's Claiborne Farm announced stud fees Oct. 15 for a number of their stallions that will stand at the Paris, Ky-based farm during the upcoming 2021 breeding season.

Among 13 stallions, War Front leads the charge with a stud fee of $150,000. The internationally acclaimed son of Danzig and emerging sire of sires is North America's #1 sire by percentage of lifetime stakes winners, graded stakes winners, and Grade 1 winners. In 2020, War Front has added three new Grade 1 winners to his record, bringing his lifetime total to 23, the most of any stallion in North America behind only Tapit with 27.

War Front's most recent Grade 1 winners include Breeders' Cup hopefuls Civil Union and Halladay, as well as classic winner War of Will, who will stand alongside his sire at Claiborne Farm for the upcoming breeding season.

In the sales ring, War Front continued his reign among leading sires with yearlings commanding prices up to $1,050,000. On the racetrack, no other sire in North America has more Grade 1 winners than War Front in 2020.

“In these unprecedented times, we felt it would be irresponsible to raise or keep some stud fees the same as last year, despite our stallions having outstanding success in the sales ring and on the racetrack,” said Claiborne president Walker Hancock. “It is now more important than ever that we do what is best for the sustainability of our industry.”

Eclipse champion and three-time Grade 1 winner Blame will stand for $30,000. Ranked among the top of his crop with 63 stakes horses and 30 stakes winners lifetime, his 16 graded stakes winners include Nadal, winner of this year's Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. Yearlings sired by Blame have sold up to $400,000 this year.

Flatter, the prolific son of A.P. Indy, will stand for $35,000. He has sired more than 100 stakes horses and 50 stakes winners lifetime, including recent champions West Coast and Avie's Flatter. This year, his 2-year-olds sold for up to $600,000, while yearlings brought up to $330,000 in the sales ring.

Mastery, the undefeated Grade 1-winning son of Candy Ride (ARG), will remain at $25,000. The much-anticipated first yearlings by Mastery sold for $510,000, $450,000, and $400,000 this year, with an average of $142,425.

Catholic Boy and Demarchelier, who both stood their first seasons at Claiborne in 2020, will remain unchanged. Catholic Boy, one of only three North American 3-year-old colts in history to win Grade 1 events on both dirt and turf, will stand for $25,000. Demarchelier, the only son of top international sire Dubawi standing in Kentucky, will stand for $5,000.

First Samurai, the proven son of Giant's Causeway, will stand for $15,000. He is the sire of undefeated 2-year-old sensation Plum Ali, a Breeders' Cup hopeful and winner of the recent G2 Miss Grillo Stakes. Yearlings by First Samurai have sold for $260,000, $250,000, $240,000, etc. this year.

Stud fees for Eclipse champion Runhappy and War of Will will be announced following the Breeders' Cup.

Preakness Stakes hero War of Will, a classic-winning son of War Front, will join his sire at Claiborne Farm for stud duty in 2021. A Grade 1 winner on both dirt and turf, War of Will captured the G1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland this summer and is pointed towards the Breeders' Cup.

Bahamian Squall Filly Fastest At OBS July Sale Under Tack Finale

Hip No. 1030, a daughter of Bahamian Squall consigned by McKathan Bros. Sales, Agent, sped a quarter in :20 3/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the sixth and final session of the under tack show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 July Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age.

The dark bay or brown filly is out of Up for Grabs, by First Samurai, from the family of graded stakes winner Love That Jazz.

Hip No. 983, a son of Laoban consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, turned in the session's fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :9 4/5. The bay colt is out of One Look, by Henny Hughes, a half-sister to graded stakes placed Before You Know It.

Two horses shared honors for the fastest three-eighths, clocked in :33 flat.

Hip No. 938, a 2-year-old dark bay or brown colt by Protonico consigned by Whitman Sales LLC, Agent, is out of Mongolian Changa, by Brilliant Speed, from the family of Grade 1 winner High Yield.
Hip No. 992, Chambers Creek, a 3-year-old bay filly by Goldencents consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent, is out of Secret Song, by Dunkirk, from the family of graded stakes placed stakes winner Honolua Storm.

Hip No. 1021, a gray or roan colt by Anchor Down consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, worked the session's only quarter in :21 flat. He's out of Solo Buena, by Half Ours, a half sister to stakes winner Ide Like a Double.

A pair of youngsters worked quarters in :21 1/5.
