Practical Joke Filly Tops CTHS Ontario Canadian Premier Yearling Sale

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) Canadian Premier Yearling Sale posted gains in gross and average sale price on Wednesday, led by a $180,000 filly by Practical Joke.

Wednesday's auction saw 158 horses change hands for revenues of $3,144,400 (Canadian), up 12 percent from last year's sale, when 142 horses brought $2,795,300. The average sale price rose one percent to $19,901 from $19,685, while the median dipped 31 percent to $10,000 after finishing at $14,500 in 2020.

The ticket read “J. Nelson” on the buyer line for the sale-topper, Hip 75, a Practical Joke filly who hammered for $180,000.

The bay filly is the second foal out of the multiple stakes-winning Silent Name mare Silent Treat, hailing from the family of Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Wavell Avenue.

Bred in Ontario by Stablemates, the filly was consigned by Shannondoe Farm.

The auction's most expensive colt was a son of Silent Name who sold to William and Anne Scott for $160,000.

Offered as Hip 94, the bay colt is out of the stakes-placed City Zip mare Sweet Bama Breeze, whose five foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner Will She, and stakes-placed Sweet Grass Creek and Sweet Crimson. Graded stakes-placed runners Bushetta Buck and Railroad are in the Ontario-bred's extended family.

Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency consigned the colt, as agent.

11-Race Card Opens Woodbine’s 2021 Meeting This Saturday

The long awaited 2021 Thoroughbred season kicks off at Woodbine Racetrack this weekend with an 11-race card set to begin at 1:20 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, June 12.

With the Government of Ontario launching the first stage of its 'Roadmap To Reopen' plan allowing horse racing to resume, Woodbine will host live racing without spectators. Fans can watch and wager on all the action via HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse app, or tune in to the live stream available on Woodbine.com.

The 2021 meet will get underway with an 11-race card on Saturday that includes a $50,000 guaranteed Pick 5 pool and $100,000 guaranteed early Pick 4. The Jackpot Hi-5 will resume, with a carryover of $117,062.64.

Sovereign Award-winning jockey Rafael Hernandez will be busy on opening day as he looks to defend his Woodbine title after earning a meet-leading 129 victories last season. The multiple graded stakes-winning reinsman is listed on nine mounts, including the Roger Attfield-trained three-year-old filly Speightstown Shirl in the eighth race, a $123,200 maiden allowance over one mile of turf.

A full sister to graded stakes winner Shirl's Speight, the Charles Fipke homebred will look to break through for her first win following three consecutive runner-up efforts. Speightstown Shirl will face a field of 13 other fillies and mares that includes the debuting Ontario-bred Astrological, who is a Malibu Moon half-sibling to 2018 Woodbine Oaks champion Dixie Moon. Emma Jayne-Wilson is listed to ride Astrological for Woodbine's top trainer Mark Casse and owners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber.

The highly anticipated opening weekend will feature live racing on Saturday and Sunday, with post time also slated for 1:20 p.m. The racing schedule will add Fridays (4:50 p.m. post time) and Thursdays (1:20 p.m. post time) as it expands to its normal schedule in the coming weeks.

Woodbine’s 2021 Meet To Open Saturday, June 12

With Ontario entering Step One of the 'Roadmap to Reopen' plan earlier than originally expected, Woodbine Entertainment announced Monday that the 2021 Thoroughbred Meet at Woodbine Racetrack will open this Saturday, June 12 with a 1:20 p.m. post time.

The meet will continue Sunday with a 1:20 p.m. post time, followed by racing on Friday, June 18, Saturday, June 19 and Sunday June 20, before continuing with its typical four race days a week schedule (Thursday through Sunday). To help make up for some last race days, Woodbine plans to add additional races to its race cards during the first two weekends of racing.

“While it has been a very frustrating period, I would like to thank the Government of Ontario for the recent attention it has given the horse racing industry,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “In particular, I would like to thank Premier Doug Ford for his understanding and interest in the plight of the horse racing industry that has been so greatly impacted by the global pandemic and ensuing government restrictions.”

Live racing at Woodbine Racetrack will operate without any spectators due to government restrictions.

“Although our industry has been substantially impacted, I do very much remain confident in the future of horse racing in Ontario and look forward to getting back on track later this week,” Lawson added. “On behalf of Woodbine Entertainment, thank you to our horse people for their patience, professionalism, and resiliency they continue to demonstrate, especially in face of adversity.”
