Olympic Glory’s Shiffrin Dominates Prix de Conde Rivals

Haras d'Etreham's homebred Shiffrin (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}–Scruples, by Pioneerof the Nile) followed up a pair of wins at Clairefontaine with a third on stakes bow in last month's Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage and stepped forward to notch a career best in Saturday's G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. In command after the initial strides, the 3-1 chance was last to come off the bridle in the straight and kept on strongly under a drive inside the final 300 metres to comfortably hold De Sica (Fr) (Demarchelier {GB}) by 1 1/2 lengths. Gold Index (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) finished a neck adrift in third.

“To win my first Group race here at Chantilly, I am almost speechless,” said trainer Nicolas Le Roch after registering a landmark success. “Thanks goes to my team at home and thanks also to Nicolas de Chambure. He is a super boss and I would not be here without him. We always loved this filly, even though she ran moderately first time out, but we kept the faith and all has gone well since. She did all we expected from her and all we had planned. She stays well, she had a great ride and she will come back for the [Oct. 22 G1] Criterium de Saint-Cloud.”

Pedigree Notes

Shiffrin, who becomes the ninth pattern-race winner for her sire, is the second of three foals and lone scorer out of Scruples (Pioneerof The Nile), herself an unraced half to G3 Gallinule S. victor Crossfirehurricane (Kitten's Joy) and Listed Patton S. victrix My Generation (Speightstown). The January-foaled bay's stakes-winning second dam Louvakhova (Maria's Mon), whose descendants include multiple stakes winner Jack And Noah (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}), is a half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast). Louvakhova is a daughter of G3 Prix Miesque winner Louvain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}), herself a half-sister to G1 Haydock Sprint Cup hero G Force (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). Scruples has a yearling filly by Belardo (Ire) to come.

What’s In A Name? Morgana, Merlin The Wizard, Will Scarlet, Bobsleigh, Shiffrin

Craon's June 16-winning filly Morgana is by supremely established sire Camelot, as she should be. Morgana (also known as Morgan Le Fay) is quite a presence in the legends of the Knights of the Round Table: sorcerer, enchantress, half-sister and rival to King Arthur, apprentice and maybe lover of Merlin, deadly enemy of Queen Guinevere while secretly in love with, of course, none other than Lancelot. Camelot was no convent finishing school: the court had more intrigues and betrayals than the palace of a late Roman emperor. The name of this 3-year-old filly is particularly fitting, as her dam is called Magic Mist. “Fata Morgana” is a form of mirage, well known to sailors looking at the horizon in open sea, probably caused by vapor and condensation: a magic mist indeed, which makes the name of the filly overflowing with sense and significance. Repeat 3-year-old winner Merlin The Wizard, also by Camelot, obviously, is a similarly straightforward case of Arthurian nostalgia. I believe that there is also a Camelot Lady of the Lake in National Hunt: the sire is clearly a good educator–Excalibur is in good hands.

Robin Hood is the very model of the well-meaning Great Outlaw, secretly loved by the masses–for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, and maybe other reasons as well. There is much Sherwood Forest lore in the name of young Longchamp winner Will Scarlet: his namesake was one of Robin's Merry Men (along with Little John and Friar Tuck) and the dam is Lady Marian, the on-off girlfriend of the great man in green tights.

There may be an intriguing connection between the names of multiple 2-year-old winner Bobsleigh and his dam Lady Rosebud, via Orson Welles's masterpiece film “Citizen Kane”, but to disclose it could be a spoiler for the people who have not seen the movie, so here I stop.

In the case of Clairefontaine 2-year-old winning filly, Shiffrin and Olympic Glory sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble: Olympian US skier Mikaela Shiffrin has two gold medals to her name and has dominated her sport for some time.

Shadai Buys Group 1 Winner Grand Glory For Broodmare Duty

Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farm has purchased Group 1 winner Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) for broodmare duty after her run in Sunday's G1 Japan Cup, Jour de Galop reported. Fifth in the Cup in 2021, she is currently jointly owned 50/50 by Yoshida and Xavier Marie's Haras de Hus. Anne-Sophie Yoh, who manages the interests of Haras de Hus, confirmed the news to JDG.

Bred by Elevage Haras de Bourgeauville and sold for €18,000 to Marco Bozzi Bloodstock during Arqana's October Yearling Sale in 2017, the bay made a winning debut in the colours of Bartolo Faraci at Deauville in December of her juvenile season in 2018. Purchased privately by Albert Frassetto, John D'Amato and Mike Pietrangelo over the winter, Grand Glory would go on to take third in the 2019 G1 Prix de Diane. Returning as a 4-year-old, the mare landed the G3 Prix de Flore in heavy ground after placing in a pair of Group 2s earlier that season. At five, she tallied the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy and G1 Prix Jean Romanet in succession, before missing by a nose in the G1 Prix de l'Opera that October.

She went through the Deauville ring again during Arqana's Vente d'Elevage last December, and brought €2.5 million from Yohea acting for Marie. Now a 6-year-old, the bay won the Listed Prix Zarkava this April and the G3 Prix Allez France a month later in the silks of Haras de Hus. Third in Royal Ascot's G1 Prince Of Wales's S., Grand Glory was unplaced in both the G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Her record stands at 23-8-4-4, $1,257,387.

Out of the placed Madonna Lily (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}), Grand Glory is her fifth of six foals, and one of two stakes winners. Her final and last foal is the 2017 Toronado (Ire) gelding Bois d'Argent (GB), who won at listed level in France. Madonna Lily is a half-sister to GII Canadian S. heroine Minakshi (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), while she is also kin to G1 Crown Oaks victress Arapaho Miss (Aus) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), and that mare's G1 Kennedy VRC Oaks-winning daughter Miami Bound (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}).

Group 1-Winning Juvenile Thunder Moon Retired To Haras De Bouquetot, As 2023 Roster Revealed

Group 1-winning juvenile Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}–Small Sacrifice {Ire}, by Sadler's Wells) has been retired and will stand at Al Shaqab Racing's Haras de Bouquetot in 2023. The 'TDN Rising Star' will stand for €6,000 on their nine-strong roster next season and will be available for viewing at Bouquetot during the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale.

Bred by Aidan and Annemarie O'Brien's Whisperview Trading, the colt was named a 'Rising Star' after his debut win at the Curragh and claimed the G1 National S. in his next outing before running third in the G1 Dewhurst S. Owned by Mrs. C C Regalado-Gonzalez, the Joseph O'Brien trainee was only a head shy of adding the G1 Prix Jean Prat to his resume at three, and he was also third in the G3 Gladness S. this term. He retires with a mark of 13-2-2-2 and $365,398 in earnings.

“Thunder Moon was defined by his natural class and strong turn-of-foot,” said O'Brien. “His performance in the G1 National S. really showcased this and his brilliance as a 2-year-old beating a field packed with Group 1 winners and future group performers. He also came within a whisker of winning the Prix Jean Prat the following year. We are really looking forward to training his progeny in the years to come.”

The son of Small Sacrifice is a half-brother to stakes winner Table Rock (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). His third dam is the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Trusted Partner (Affirmed), dam of GI Matriarch S. heroine Dress To Thrill (Danehill) and her full-sister, the blue hen Polished Gem (Ire) (Danehill), the dam of eight stakes winners.

Haras de Bouquetot's Stud Manager Benoit Jeffroy said, “We're delighted to welcome Thunder Moon at Haras de Bouquetot for 2023. He is a precocious horse of 1m60 (15.3 hh) who has shown plenty of speed winning the National S. like Dubawi (Ire), Danehill Dancer (Ire) and Teofilo (Ire) did before him. We were looking for a Group 1 winner at 2 excelling over seven furlongs, not dissimilar to the profiles of recent French successes Wootton Bassett (GB) and Siyouni (Fr).”

Leading the Haras de Bouquetot roster is Zelzal (Fr), who has sired three stakes winners led by multiple graded winner Dolce Zel (Fr) and GIII Sweet Life S. heroine Ouraika (Fr), and is priced at €15,000. G1 Prix de l'Abbaye hero Wooded (Ire) has his first yearlings in 2023 and is €12,000. As previously announced, Group 1 sire Galileo Gold (GB) has moved to Bouquetot in a joint-venture with his former home, Tally-Ho Stud, and he will stand for €7,000, the same price as G1 Irish 2000 Guineas victor Romanised (Ire), who has his first yearlings. Group 1 winner and stakes-siring Al Wukair (Ire), G3 Molecomb S. scorer and G1 Middle Park S. third Armor (GB) expecting his first foals, and multiple Group 1 winner Ectot (GB) will each command €5,000. Rounding out the roster is Olympic Glory (Ire), the sire of 13 stakes winner, at €4,000.
