Ollie’s Candy to be Offered at Keeneland November

Paul and Karen Eggert’s versatile Grade I winner Ollie’s Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) will be offered for sale during Book 1 of the Keeneland November sale on Nov. 9–two days after she competes in the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

“Ollie’s Candy’s Grade I talent combined with her pedigree and conformation make her a tremendous prospect to offer this November,” said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales, which will consign the 5-year-old. “I also love the fact that she is an open book to breed to many of the top stallions from around the globe.”

Two-for-two on synthetic to kick off her career, the homebred annexed the GII Summertime Oaks as a sophomore on the dirt and was a narrow second in the GI American Oaks on turf. She got her Grade I last year in Del Mar’s Clement L. Hirsch S. on the main track, and has been on the board despite tough trips in all four of her tries this term–all at the highest level–including a second in defense of her Hirsch title last time Aug. 2.

The John Sadler pupil is scheduled to prep for the Breeders’ Cup in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. at Keeneland Oct. 4. She currently has earnings in excess of $830,000 and has been on thee board in 12 of 14 career starts. Ollie’s Candy is out of the Grade III winner Afternoon Stroll (Stroll).

Grade 1 Winner, Breeders’ Cup Hopeful Ollie’s Candy To Be Offered At Keeneland November Sale

The ultra-consistent Ollie's Candy, a Grade 1 winner on dirt who is Grade 1-placed on turf, is scheduled to compete in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland on Nov. 7 and two days later be offered as a racing or broodmare prospect during the premier Book 1 of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, will consign the 5-year-old daughter of leading sire Candy Ride, who has been first, second or third in 12 of 14 starts from coast to coast while defeating 24 graded winners and nine Grade 1 winners. She has earned $830,151.

Ollie's Candy, an alumnus of Keeneland's 2016 September Yearling Sale, is out of Afternoon Stroll, a daughter of Stroll who won Keeneland's Grade 3 Appalachian and is the dam of three winners from three foals.

Based in Southern California, Ollie's Candy has competed at the highest level of her division while traveling across the U.S. She won the 2019 G1 Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar and was second in the race this year. Her 2020 campaign also includes a second in the G1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn and third-place finishes in the G1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita and G1 Ogden Phipps at Belmont.

The mare is pointed to the Oct. 4 G1 Juddmonte Spinster at Keeneland during the prestigious Fall Stars Weekend on the opening three days of the Fall Meet. The stakes is a “Win and You're In” race for the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Ollie's Candy has been an outstanding performer since she began her career at three and won her first three races, including the G2 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita. On turf at Del Mar, she was second in both the G1 Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club and G2 San Clemente.

Last year, Ollie's Candy won the Clement L. Hirsch after finishing second in the G3 Wilshire on turf at Santa Anita. She also was third in the G2 Zenyatta and fourth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Santa Anita.

Fighting Mad ‘Ran Them Off Their Feet’ In Del Mar’s Clement L. Hirsch

Gary and Mary West's homebred filly Fighting Mad bolted out of the gate to the lead Sunday in the $250,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes and then never looked back, outrunning five classy rivals to capture the first Grade I race of her career at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

Abel Cedillo was aboard the 4-year-old daughter of New Year's Day as she covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.46 for her half-length tally. She is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert.

“I had the same instructions today that I had yesterday (for his victory on Thousand Words for trainer Bob Baffert in the Shared Belief Stakes),” said Cedillo. “Get her out of there and see if you can get to the front. She really broke sharply and want to go right away. I got her to relax some on the backside, then she went right on with it. She's just an amazing filly.”

Finishing second in the filly-mare headliner was Paul or Karen Eggert's Ollie's Candy, who had won this race last year. Running third was Bo Hirsch's Ce Ce. Hirsch is the son of the man the race is named for.

Fighting Mad picked up a check for $150,000 for the win and moved her bankroll up to $444,008 after her fifth win in eight starts. As the 9-5 favorite, she paid $5.60, $3.00 and $2.20 across the board.

Because she took the Hirsch, Fighting Mad is now a “Win & You're In” Challenge Race winner, meaning she gets a guaranteed spot in this year's $2-million Breeders' Cup Distaff along with all her fees paid for the championship race. The nine-furlong crucible runs Saturday, November 7, at Keeneland in Lexington, KY.

Baffert and Cedillo won the Shared Belief Stakes with Thousand Words in a very similar scenario to the Hirsch. He, too, was quickly sent to the front and made every pole a winner. The pair also teamed earlier in the session with the Wests' Maximum Security to win the San Diego Handicap.

“I was a little bit worried about her because she was getting pretty warm in the paddock,” said Baffert. “But Abel (Cedillo) knows her pretty well and he knows speed is her weapon. To look at her you wouldn't think she could go (a distance), but when she started opening up, I figured he must know what he's doing. Basically, she ran them off their feet. The way she acted in the paddock, she ran an incredible race. She was trembling and sweating and I was worried, but once the race started she was pretty serious. ”

Earlier on the card, C T R Stables' Positivity, ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, withstood a claim of foul and won the $100,500 Graduation Stakes for 2-year-old California breds by half a length. The Paynter colt ran five and a half furlongs in 1:05.49 and picked up a winner's share of $57,000.

J. Kirk and Judy Robison's Good With People made all the fractions in the race, but tired late and had to settle for second. KMN Racing's Scooby was third.

Positivity won his only other start – a straight maiden race at Santa Anita on May 22 – and now has $87,000 on his earnings ledger.

The victory for his trainer, Luis Mendez, was his second at Del Mar. Last year he won this same race with Big Returns via disqualification.

Positivity paid $13.20, $4.80 and $3.60 across the board.

Sunday's riding star was Van Dyke with three firsts. Flavien Prat and Juan Hernandez each won two races. Prat now leads the riders' standings with 18 first after 10 days of racing.

Racing returns to Del Mar Friday with first post at 2 p.m.

Trio of Grade I Winners Face Off in Clement Hirsch

A competitive field, highlighted by three top-level scorers, are set to face off Sunday in the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. at Del Mar, a “Win and You’re In” for the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Ce Ce (Elusive Quality) scored back-to-back wins in the Mar. 14 GI Beholder Mile and Apr. 18 GI Apple Blossom H. Favored to repeat in the GII Santa Maria S. back at Santa Anita, she could only manage third behind the re-opposing Fighting Mad (New Year’s Day) and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Hard Not to Love (Hard Spun).

Victorious in the GI La Brea S. in December, Hard Not to Love followed suit with a win in the GII Santa Monica S. in February. The one-eyed bay finished second to Ce Ce after setting the pace in the Beholder Mile, but rallied from off the pace in the Santa Maria last time.

Last year’s Hirsch winner Ollie’s Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) looks to successfully defend her title in this event. Third in the Beholder Mile, the dark bay came up just a head short in the Apple Blossom and finished a close third in a blanket finish in Belmont’s GI Ogden Phipps S. June 13.
