Mastercraftsman’s Coltrane In Tune In The Lonsdale

Mick and Janice Mariscotti's ultra-consistent 6-year-old gelding Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}–Promise Me {Ire}, by Montjeu {Ire}) settled for placings in this term's G1 Gold Cup and G1 Goodwood Cup and exacted revenge on Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) with a determined effort in Friday's G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York.

Coltrane, a 14-length runner-up in this marathon contest last year, had risen through the staying ranks to notch victories in last term's G2 Doncaster Cup and this term's G3 Sagaro S. and raced in fourth through the early stages. Inching into third at halfway, the 11-4 second favourite made continued headway to wrest control from habitual frontrunner Quickthorn approaching the two pole and was driven out in the latter stages to withstand the late threat of Courage Mon Ami by 1 1/2 lengths in game fashion. Giavellotto (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) fared best of the remainder and stayed on to finish a half-length adrift in third.

“That was fully deserved, he's been incredibly consistent and he is adored by everyone,” commented Anna Lisa Balding. “Tom [Marquand] gave Quickthorn such a great ride at Goodwood and he fully deserved that, but it was Coltrane's turn today and he's done it in brilliant style. I'm thrilled to win another Group 2 for Mick and Janice [Mariscotti] as they have been incredibly patient. He had surgery two years ago and he hasn't looked back since, but that is why he doesn't go to Australia. He's like a pet, he's adorable and I think it will be Ascot [Champions Day] next as he ran so well in the [G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup] race last year.”

Stable companion Nate The Great was pulled up in the home straight and vanned off the track for treatment. “Hopefully Nate The Great will be okay,” Balding added. “They have put a compression boot on him and taken him back to the stables. The vets are there and they are doing what they can.”

Reflecting on the performance of Gold Cup hero Courage Mon Ami, Franke Dettori said, “He wasn't keen, but it took him a while to warm up and then he came good. The [Group 1] penalty and shorter trip made Coltrane a better horse than me. We didn't let Quickthorn go today and that made a big difference. It was the right result today, Coltrane and my horse first and second in the Gold Cup and first and second today. The [G1] Prix du Cadran over two-and-a-half [miles] would be tailor-made for him and I guess he'll come back for the Gold Cup next year without me.”

First Stakes Winner For Ollie Sangster At Sandown

Ollie Sangster trainee Shuwari (Ire) (New Bay {GB}–Lady Pimpernel {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}) recovered from a slow getaway to snag her June 27 debut at Newbury and stepped forward to register a first black-type success for the freshman conditioner in Friday's Listed European Bloodstock News Star S. at Sandown. The 9-4 second favourite was less than perfect at the break once more and occupied a midfield fifth for the most part here. Making eyecatching headway on the bridle in the straight to join the front rank passing the quarter-mile marker, she came under pressure approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to deny Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) by a half-length for a career high.

“Oisin [Murphy] gave her a lovely ride and I'm delighted,” said Sangster. “I was on the fence this morning having seen the [weather] report from last night, but I spoke to [Ballylinch Stud's] John O'Connor and he was fairly confident New Bays go on the [soft] ground, so we thought we would take our chance. It was probably not ideal ground, but she dug deep. She is a tenacious and courageous filly and, hopefully, we might have some nice targets later in the year. I've some nice juveniles, but she is at the top at the pile at the moment.” Looking forward to possible future targets, he added, “The [G3] Prestige at Goodwood might be for her and then I suppose something like the [G2] Rockfel and maybe the [G1] Fillies' Mile. That is ambitious and we will see how we progress between now and then. I'd like to think she will stay the mile next year and she strikes me as a filly that will stay as she relaxes well and she finishes out well too. I'm lucky to have a horse like this in the yard and it is nice to have good support and nice horses to work with.”

Shuwari is the fourth of five foals and one of three scorers produced by GIII Rober J Frankel S. victrix Lady Pimpernel (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), herself a granddaughter of G3 Deutscher Stutenpreis winner and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) third Anno Luce (GB) (Old Vic {GB}). Her second dam Angeleno (Ire) (Belong To Me) is a half-sister to Listed Prix de l'Avre winner Air Trooper (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). Shuwari's fourth dam is G2 Preis der Diana-winning dual German champion Anna Paola (Ger) (Prince Ippi {Ger}). The March-foaled chestnut is kin to a yearling filly by Nathaniel (Ire).

Fozzy Stack: ‘Aspen Grove Has Nothing To Lose In Belmont Oaks’

Fozzy Stack says that Aspen Grove (Ire) is something of a forgotten horse heading into the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. and revealed that there were genuine excuses for her below-par effort in the Irish 1,000 Guineas when the Justify filly was found to be in season.

Aspen Grove carried Craig Bernick's distinctive silks to victory in a Group 3 contest at the Curragh last term and, with that valuable black-type success already secured, Stack felt connections could afford to be brave in travelling her over for Saturday's Grade I assignment.

Stack said of the filly who is co-owned by Mrs. John Magnier, “She was in season when she ran in the Irish 1,000 Guineas so there was very much a plausible excuse for that effort. There's only one Guineas, she couldn't run in it next year, so that's why we took our chance.

“Listen, she's travelled over well and she seems to have settled in nicely. Mark Enright is over here with her and he is happy with her so we'll see what happens.”

He added, “She has good form. She ran very well on her reappearance at Leopardstown when third in a Group 3 despite being caught wide the whole way round.

“You could run around in Group 3s at home in Ireland for forty grand or you can come over here for a lot of money. She's already a Group 3 winner so she's nothing to lose and it all to gain.”

Aspen Grove is a general 8-1 chance with most firms for the Belmont Oaks and will have the assistance of Oisin Murphy in the saddle.

Murphy's primary reason for jetting out Stateside is to ride Andrew Balding's The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in the Belmont Derby and Stack said that it would have been “silly” not to snap up a rider of his quality for Aspen Grove.

He said, “It made a lot of sense to get Oisin to ride the filly. He's coming over to ride The Foxes for Andrew Balding anyway so it would have been silly not to use him while he's here.”

Stack has enjoyed a good start to his domestic campaign in Ireland and is operating at a 17 per cent strike-rate with 11 winners under his belt.

Indeed, he has already tasted big-race success on American soil when Yesterdayoncemore (Ire) (No Nay Never) won a Grade II at Del Mar in 2019.

Like Yesterdayoncemore, Stack says that Aspen Grove could well continue her career in America for Bernick, who he describes as an important supporter of his famous County Tipperary stable.

Stack said, “We'll get this over with first, but we will probably run her at Saratoga or at Del Mar after this. I'm very lucky to have Craig as an owner. He's a very nice guy and has a great interest in the game. He actually bred Aspen Grove.”

On the race itself, he added, “Graham Motion's filly [Mission Of Joy (Kitten's Joy)] sets a good standard and Chad Brown has a couple of nice fillies [Aspray (Quality Road) and Prerequisite (Upstart)] in there as well.

“There are no easy Group 1 races wherever you go but they are usually not as difficult to win on the grass in America than they are in Europe so hopefully she can go close.”

Murphy To Replace Dettori Aboard Chaldean In Sunday’s Prix Jean Prat

Oisin Murphy will take over from the suspended Frankie Dettori aboard 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville.

Dettori will miss the ride after receiving a nine-day careless riding ban at Royal Ascot last month and that suspension will also rule him out of riding Emily Upjohn in the Coral-Eclipse on Saturday.

Murphy has never ridden Chaldean in public before but Barry Mahon, racing manager for Juddmonte, the owners of the top-notch colt, said once the Irishman was available to replace Dettori, connections were left with a straightforward decision.

“If everything is going okay with the horse and Andrew [Balding, trainer] is happy with him, the plan will hopefully be to run at Deauville and, as far as I am aware, Oisin Murphy will take the ride,” Mahon told the Nick Luck Daily Podcast.

He added, “Oisin is a top-class jockey and is part of Andrew's stable and we'll be delighted to have him on board. [Chaldean is] good, he came out of Ascot in great form and has only had two runs this year so is relatively fresh and he's in good shape.”
