Oisin Murphy Crowned Britain’s Champion Jockey For Second Straight Year

Oisin Murphy signed off his British racing campaign with a double at Southwell Racecourse on Tuesday, Nov. 3 and it has proved enough to win him a second jockey's title.

The 25-year-old Irishman finishes the season on 142 winners, maintaining a healthy lead over his closest challenger William Buick until the very end.

On winning a second successive Champion Flat Jockey title, Murphy said: “I'm incredibly proud to have won a second Champion Jockey title and I'm extremely thankful for the team around me that have enabled me to do so – my agent, manager, driver, form-man, and family.

“It's huge to win two jockeys' championships in two years and beyond my wildest dreams. I tried my absolute best to do so and thank you to everyone who has helped along the way.

“I'm particularly proud of my strike rate for Andrew Balding. Sheikh Fahad allowed me to go wherever I wanted to and for that I must thank him and all the team at Qatar Racing too.”

Amongst his 142 wins, Oisin Murphy claimed his maiden Classic success when securing the QIPCO 2000 Guineas with Kameko in a scintillating performance.

In total, Murphy claimed seven UK Group wins this season and earned over £2.2 million in prize money. His top performing racecourse has been Kempton Park where he has enjoyed 16 wins.

Amongst the personal milestones achieved by jockeys this season, Murphy claimed his 1000th British winner Perfect Sign at Southwell Racecourse.

Oisin Murphy Earns Second Champion Jockey Title

Last year’s champion jockey Oisin Murphy earned his second crown with 142 wins in 2020. William Buick closed to within nine wins, but could ultimately not make up the deficit at Newcastle on Friday. Murphy is currently at the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Keeneland. The retained rider for Qatar Racing, Murphy booted home Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in June.

“I’m incredibly proud to have won a second champion jockey title and I’m extremely thankful for the team around me that have enabled me to do so–my agent, manager, driver, form-man, and family,” Murphy told Great British Racing. “It’s huge to win two jockeys’ championships in two years and beyond my wildest dreams. I tried my absolute best to do so and thank you to everyone who has helped along the way.

“I’m particularly proud of my strike rate for Andrew Balding. Sheikh Fahad allowed me to go wherever I wanted to and for that I must thank him and all the team at Qatar Racing too.”

Cieren Fallon won his second consecutive champion apprentice jockey title. It was the first time an apprentice earned back-to-back titles in 32 years. Fallon’s highlight was undoubtably Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) in the G1 July Cup. Fallon is the retained second jockey for Qatar Racing.

“It’s an amazing achievement for me, it is something I set out to do after the success of last year,” said Fallon. “I’ve been very lucky to have the people I have around me to help me achieve these goals–my jockey coach, nutritionist, a great boss in Sheikh Fahad, William and Maureen Haggas, my mum and dad.

“They are all the best at what they do, so I’m very lucky to be in the position. Winning the July Cup with Oxted is obviously the greatest highlight of my year and a memorable day.”

Champion Jockey Oisin Murphy Reaches 1,000-Winner Mark

Qatar Racing colourbearer Perfect Sign (Ire) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) gave pilot Oisin Murphy his 1,000 winner. The reigning champion jockey and retained rider for Qatar Racing teamed up with the juvenile filly for trainer Michael Dods at Southwell. The 25-year-old Irishman, who was the champion apprentice in the UK in 2014, was appointed number one Jockey for Qatar Racing in 2016. On board Qatar Racing’s Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) he gained his first Classic success in the 2020 G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas.

Murphy told Sky Sports Racing: “I ride for great people, and it’s really nice to get my 1,000th in these colours. The filly is in the sale on Thursday, so it’s a good moment. When you start out as an apprentice you hope to just get one winner–hopefully I can ride 1,000 more in the future. I ride good horses all over the world–I’m very privileged and I have to remember that.”

The Kitten’s Joy colt, who is bound for a stallion career at Tweenhills Farm & Stud after a start in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 7, galloped at Kempton on Tuesday.

“We’ve been so lucky to find good horses over the years,” he added. “Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) was a champion, as is Kameko, but to replace them isn’t easy–so we keep trying. To win my first Classic on Kameko was great–growing up as a child you watch all the Classics, and that was very special.

“Kameko heads to the Breeders’ Cup, and we took him to Kempton this morning and we went round left-handed so he could get used to that.”

2,000 Guineas Winner Kameko Will Retire To Tweenhills After Breeders’ Cup Run

QIPCO 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko will be retired to stand at Tweenhills, home of the Qatar Racing stallions, at the end of his 3-year-old campaign in 2020.

Kameko was the fastest ever winner of the 2,000 Guineas and Qatar Racing's third European Gr.1 Classic winner after Simple Verse and Just The Judge. He was also an impressive winner of the Gr.1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at two and successfully gave weight to world-class older horses in the Gr.2 Joel Stakes.

The son of Kitten's Joy – the same sire as Qatar Racing's late world champion Roaring Lion – joins Zoustar, Champion First-, Second- and Third-Season Sire in Australia, Gr.1-winning sire Havana Gold and champion older miler Lightning Spear at Tweenhills for the 2021 breeding season.

Looking back on Kameko's success, Sheikh Fahad Al-Thani, Chairman of Qatar Racing, said: “My brothers and I are delighted to own another superstar in Kameko, whose record-breaking two- and three-year-old campaigns will live long in our memory. We cannot wait to unveil him to breeders.”

Trainer Andrew Balding added: “Kameko is without doubt the best horse I've trained. He has all the attributes of a top-class miler and is a striking horse to look at. I feel very honored to have had the opportunity to train a horse of such class.”

Kameko was a first British Classic winner for jockey Oisin Murphy, who said: “I felt from the very beginning that this could be a special horse. He's the perfect model – he has size, durability and a great character. To ride, he has super balance, a great turn of foot and a good mind – you can put him anywhere in a race. He's a machine.”

Kameko will run at the Breeders' Cup and on his return will be paraded for breeders, along with other Tweenhills stallions, at Longholes Stud in Newmarket during the Tattersalls December Mare Sale. His 2021 stud fee and syndication plans will be announced in due course.
