Marcel Boussac Glory For Wootton Bassett’s Zellie

Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac which opened ParisLongchamp's Arc fixture took place without TDN Rising Star and likely favourite Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) after Andre Fabre opted to wait for Friday's G3 Oh So Sharp S. due to an excess of 20 millimetres of rain falling pre-racing. How Juddmonte's unbeaten daughter of Emollient (Empire Maker) would have coped with the very soft ground is an unknown, but her stablemate Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) handled it with aplomb to deny the 33-1 shot Times Square (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) in what appeared a grind in the conditions and book her trip to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar in November.

Impressive in this ground when winning the seven-furlong Listed Prix Roland de Chambure at Deauville July 11, Al Wasmiyah Farm's acquisition was second to Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) in the Aug. 3 G3 Prix Six Perfections over that same track and trip and to Fleur D'Iris (GB) (Shamardal) in the G3 Prix d'Aumale over this course and distance Sept. 9. Held up in rear early by Oisin Murphy, the 4-1 shot was sent up the inner to pass all rivals in the straight and overhaul Times Square 100 metres from the line en route to a 1 3/4-length success, with Oscula three lengths away in third. “She is a nice, uncomplicated filly who has been so consistent,” commented Fabre, whose juggling act here resulted in a second Marcel Boussac and first since 1995. “She is finished for the season and I don't think she'll go much further than a mile. It'll be either the 1000 Guineas or the Pouliches.”

Zellie, who was campaigned in the colours of Fabre's daughter Lavinia until being sold to Qatar's Ali Hamad Al Attiya prior to the Six Perfections, had also shown an aptitude for heavy going when off the mark over six furlongs on debut at Saint-Cloud May 18 but is no one-trick pony. Following up on good ground back there on her second start over seven June 8, the bay was on good-to-soft when charging late in the Prix d'Aumale and is just an admirably versatile and honest performer with the touch of class necessary to lift a prize such as this. As fellow Fabre runner and 11-5 favourite Fleur D'Iris and the G3 Silver Flash S. and G2 Debutante S. winner Agartha (Ire) (Caravaggio) caved in having animated the race from the outset, it was a case of who had the strength in the finale and the winner lacks for nothing in that department.

Oisin Murphy said, “She prefers good ground, but has enough class to cope with this ground on the day. She is trained by an extraordinary man. Thank you very much to the owners and to Mr Fabre for the confidence placed in me. She is a beautiful, easy-to-ride filly and she has a big heart. She is a dream ride for a jockey!”

Times Square's trainer Christophe Ferland said of the runner-up, “She is a nice filly who has been very difficult to train. She has a lot of temperament and is not easy to be around, so my team have done a great job working with her. She worked very nicely 10 days ago and although the odds said we had no chance, I believed. She was beaten by a better horse on the day, but at least we have a nice filly for next season.”

Emulating the career-best success of her burgeoning sire presence, whose big day came in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on this card on the same ground in 2010, Zellie is the second foal and first runner out of Sarai (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) who is kin to three stakes winners. They are headed by Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who won a soft-ground G1 1000 Guineas as well as the G2 Rockfel S. and G3 Nell Gwyn S., and include the GIII Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Turf H. scorer Major Rhythm (Rhythm). Two of the less-accomplished half-siblings Bold Classic (Pembroke) and Gadfly (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) are responsible for the G1 Irish Derby third Festive Cheer (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}) and this year's G3 Prestige S. winner Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) respectively.

The third dam is the listed-winning Specificity (Alleged), who produced the G1 Champion S., G1 Hong Kong Cup and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud heroine Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre) who was also second in the 2006 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She is the dam of the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly winner One Foot In Heaven (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and the dual group-placed Queen (Fr) (Kingman {GB}). Pride's half-sister Fate (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) captured the G3 Prix de Flore and was third in the G1 Prix Ganay, while this is also the family of the G1 St Leger hero Touching Wood (Roberto). Sarai's son of Dabirsim (Fr) was a €95,000 purchase by Paul Nataf at the recent Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale.

Another Joel For Benbatl As Newmarket’s Track Record Falls

Confirming his love for Newmarket's Rowley Mile once again on Friday, one of the oldest TDN Rising Stars around Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) showed up in uncompromising mood to break Kameko's track record over the 2000 Guineas track and trip when repeating his 2019 success in the G2 Joel S. Third behind that Classic hero in this 12 months ago, Saeed bin Suroor's veteran warrior had been a short-head second to Lavender's Blue (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in Goodwood's G2 Celebration Mile having blown the start on his only subsequent outing Aug. 28. Sharper for that comeback, the 13-8 second favourite tracked the forcefully-ridden Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) from the outset and eventually had his measure a furlong from home. As the 11-8 market-leader Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made a second challenge up the stand's rail having had to switch around the front pair two out, Benbatl and Oisin Murphy were already beyond recall. At the line, the 7-year-old held a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over Pogo, with Master of the Seas half a length behind in third on his first start since being edged out in the Guineas in May. “He's been a machine for a number of years,” Murphy said. “He gave me my first ever Royal Ascot winner. We're in 2021 now and he's still winning group twos. He is the horse of a lifetime.”

Remarkably, Benbatl has only raced on this home strip on three occasions, winning this twice and finishing third in the 2017 G3 Craven S. Successful in Royal Ascot's G3 Hampton Court S. that season, he has since won eight group races including the G1 Dubai Turf, G1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis and G1 Ladbrokes S. in 2018 as well as finishing two-lengths runner-up to Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in the G1 Cox Plate that same year. That defeat, as well as the aforementioned Dubai Turf success stand out among his exploits, as does his five-length success in this two years ago which was enough to place him in the upper echelons of that year's class. “When he won this race in 2019 he ran to a rating of 125,” his rider added. “He's one of the best horses I've ridden and I'm thrilled that we've got him back on track. They've done a super job at the stable to produce him year in, year out.”

Saeed bin Suroor is pondering options now. “He is the horse that is leading the stable,” he said. “We follow him really! We have had a lot of fun with him. We'll keep the options open for him. It could be Champions Day, but we'll talk to Sheikh Mohammed and make a plan for him. It could be the Breeders' Cup, we'll see. It depends on the ground at Ascot, as he doesn't like it soft.”

Benbatl was the first foal out of Nahrain (GB) (Selkirk), who captured the GI Flower Bowl Invitational and G1 Prix de l'Opera and was second in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. She has since produced the useful filly Fooraat (Ire) also by Dubawi, who was second in the Listed Snowdrop Fillies S. and third in the Listed Rosemary S. on this card. Nahrain is out of Bahr (GB) (Generous {Ire}), who took the G2 Ribblesdale S. and G3 Musidora S. and was placed in the G1 Epsom and Irish Oaks and the Flower Bowl.

Bahr is also responsible for the dual listed winner Baharah (Elusive Quality) and the dam of this year's G2 Railway S. winner and G1 Phoenix S. third Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), who lines up in Saturday's G1 Middle Park S. with live claims. From the family of last year's G3 Palace House S. winner Far above (Ire) (Farhh {GB}), Nahrain's 2-year-old filly is a full-sister to Benbatl and Fooraat, while she also has a yearling colt by Muhaarar (GB) and a filly foal by Kingman (GB).

Glass Slippers Tries For Second Flying Five Stakes Win At The Curragh

Irish Champions Weekend concludes at The Curragh on Sunday with two Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win and You're In” races headlining the card. The winner of the Group 1 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes will receive an automatic starting position into the $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, and the winner of the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes earns a free spot into the $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge is an international series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into corresponding races of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California, on Nov. 5-6.

Last year the Bearstone Stud-owned Glass Slippers (GB) earned an automatic berth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint with a victory in the G1 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes, before following up with success in the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky.

This year, the Kevin Ryan-trained mare, a 5-year-old daughter of Dream Ahead, faces 12 rivals in the five-furlong contest. Tom Eaves, who has ridden the mare in 17 of her 18 starts, will again be in the saddle.

Heading the opposition is the King Power Racing owned 3-year-old filly Winter Power (IRE), who earned an automatic entry into the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint with a victory in the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes at York last month.

Trained in Yorkshire, England, by Tim Easterby, the daughter of Bungle Inthejungle (GB) has won six of her last eight starts and will be ridden by former British champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa.

The Archie Watson-trained Dragon Symbol (GB), was first past the post in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup, but was placed second behind the Wesley Ward-trained Campanelle (IRE) following a Stewards' Enquiry, and is another strong contender from Britain.

The 3-year-old was third behind Winter Power in the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes last time out and jockey Oisin Murphy believes the undulating track will suit. Murphy said: “He's been knocking on the door in Group 1 company all season and we're trying to find the key; so hopefully the stiff nature of The Curragh's five furlongs will help. Hopefully, it will bring him and Winter Power closer together. He's in very good shape.”

The Irish-trained contenders include the Jack Davison-trained Mooneista (IRE) who defeated Gustavus Weston (IRE) and Romantic Proposal (IRE) in the Group 2 Paddy Power Sapphire Stakes over course and distance in July.

Homeless Songs out to Preserve Unbeaten Record in Moyglare Stud Stakes

Impressive Leopardstown maiden winner Homeless Songs (IRE) faces seven juvenile fillies as she bids to make it two wins from two starts in the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes.

Owned by the race sponsors Moyglare Stud Farms and trained by Dermot Weld ― who enjoyed a breakthrough Breeders' Cup success with Tarnawa (IRE) at Keeneland last year ― the daughter of Frankel (GB) defeated subsequent stakes winner Agartha (IRE) by two lengths on debut.

Since finishing second behind Homeless Songs in July, the Joseph O'Brien-trained Agartha (IRE) has gone on to win the Group 3 Frank Conroy Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown and the Group 2 Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes over course and distance last month. The second, third, and seventh-placed horses that day ― Sunset Shiraz (IRE), Discoveries (IRE), and Concert Hall (IRE) ― all take her on again here.

Ireland's champion trainer Aidan O'Brien has won the seven-furlong contest a record nine times and fields two this year with Prettiest (USA), a daughter of Dubawi (IRE), and the mount of Ryan Moore, and Concert Hall, who will be ridden by Seamie Heffernan.

The eight-runner field is completed by the Ger Lyons trained Caidre Go Deo (FR) and big-priced outsider Missing Matron (IRE), trained by Jim Bolger.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winners of the Challenge Series winners to start at this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be run at Del Mar. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.

Siyouni’s Mise En Scene Swoops For Prestige Triumph

Qatar Racing's unbeaten 2-year-old filly Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) backed up a four-length debut score at Haydock last month with victory on black-type bow in Saturday's G3 Tote Prestige S. at Goodwood and provided trainer James Ferguson with a landmark score in the seven-furlong fillies' test. The 7-1 chance went forward from the break and claimed a prominent slot along the rail behind the leading duo after the initial exchanges. Angled outside for a clear passage passing the quarter-mile marker, she was shaken up approaching the final furlong and produced a strong late burst to deny 7-2 favourite Daneh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by a neck in the dying strides.

“We've always really liked her at home and to get her from Sheikh Fahad, given her pedigree, was a real honour,” said Ferguson after securing the first pattern-race winner of his fledgling career. “She looks like she'll make a really nice 3-year-old to 4-year-old, but just came to hand ready for Haydock and she was impressive [on debut] there. That kept the dream alive for everyone at home and black-type was then the route. I knew she'd taken a step forward for her first run and it was great to see her finish out like that. I'll have to talk to Sheikh Fahad and the team before making a plan, but the [Oct. 8 G1] Fillies' Mile [at Newmarket] looks an option. She's obviously the best I've had and it feels brilliant.”

Mise En Scene, half-sister to a weanling filly by Zoustar (Aus), is the third of four surviving foals and lone scorer produced by an unraced half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G1 1000 Guineas heroine Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and GIII Stars & Stripes Breeders' Cup Turf H. winner Major Rhythm (Rhythm). The February-foaled bay's second dam Specifically (Sky Classic), whose descendants also include G1 Irish Derby third Festive Cheer (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}) and this term's stakes-winning G3 Prix Six Perfections runner-up (Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), is kin to MG1SW distaffer Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre) and G3 Prix de Flore victrix and G1 Prix Ganay third Fate (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}). Pride has produced two black-type performers of her own, namely G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victor One Foot In Heaven (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange and G3 Pride S. runner-up Queen (Fr) (Kingman {GB}).
