Sioux Nation’s Ocean Quest Too Good For Ballyogan Rivals

Jessica Harrington-trained 3-year-old filly Ocean Quest (Ire) (Sioux Nation–Gold Zain {GB}, by Aqlaam {GB}) posted a close-up fourth in Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup when last seen and was rewarded for her consistency with an all-the-way win in Sunday's G3 Tally-Ho Stud Irish EBF Ballyogan S. at Naas.

The March-foaled chestnut closed her juvenile campaign with a second in the G3 Round Tower S. at the Curragh and followed up a win in Navan's Listed Committed S. on sophomore return with a second here in the G3 Lacken S. in her penultimate start.

Swiftly into stride and on the lead against the far-side rail from flagfall, the 10-11 favourite was set alight passing the quarter-mile marker and lengthened clear thereafter to easily account for Aussie Girl (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by 3 3/4 lengths.

“We gave her time after Ascot, as we know she likes a bit of give in the ground, and that's why we put her away,” explained Harrington. “I think she'll go on anything actually and she's a very classy filly. Ascot [for the G1 British Champions Sprint] in October is the main target and she's in at Haydock [for the G1 Sprint Cup]. We didn't enter her for Irish Champions weekend because it's five furlongs, but she gets a free entry for that now. If it came up heavy, maybe. This summer we've had no idea what ground we're going to get, you can have good-to-firm in the morning and abandoned in the afternoon. We know she goes on heavy, she's won on heavy and she's gone on good-to-firm. She's a very versatile filly, she's classy and speedy.”

Pedigree Notes
Ocean Quest is the second of four foals and leading performer produced by a winning half-sister to G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) hero Poetic Dream (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}) and G3 Prix Francois Boutin victrix Who Knows (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). She is a half-sister to the once-raced 2-year-old maiden filly Ocean Bliss (Ire) (El Kabeir) and a yearling filly by Raven's Pass. Her Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial-winning second dam Zain Al Boldan (GB) (Poliglote {GB}), who ran third in the G3 Bahrain Trophy, is kin to G3 Prix Edmond Blanc-winning sire Svedov (Fr) (Exit To Nowhere) out of Listed Prix des Lilas and Listed Prix Ceres victrix Carla (Fr) (Cardoun {Fr}).

Sioux Nation’s Ocean Quest Impresses In The Committed

Last seen being inched out by Treasure Trove (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in The Curragh's G3 Round Tower S. in August, Ocean Quest (Ire) (Sioux Nation) returned with a vengeance at Navan on Saturday to stamp her authority on the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Committed S. Held together early by Shane Foley racing freely in third, the 10-1 shot brushed aside Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) passing two out en route to a categoric six-length dismissal of that G2 Futurity S.-winning TDN Rising Star, with the 4-5 favourite The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) 3/4 of a length away in third.

“She is a very good filly and Jessie [Harrington] was contemplating stepping up to seven or a mile, but she has a lot of natural speed and was even keen there despite the fact that we were skipping along,” Foley said of the winner, the first part of a listed double for the in-form stable on the card. “She has thickened into a fine filly and is quite keen and forward-going at home and even going down today took me on for the first furlong–she has to have things her way.”

Assistant trainer Kate Harrington added, “She was going to the [G1] Cheveley Park last year and she pulled a muscle the week before, so we put her away for the rest of the season. We knew she was good last year–she won the first two-year-old race of the season and we bided our time with her and let her strengthen up. She'll go to the [G1] Commonwealth Cup, that's what mum said on the phone! Obviously, mum will have a chat with the owners and everything, but it looks like the likely aim at the moment.”

Ocean Quest, who was also third in the valuable Irish EBF Ballyhane S. at Naas at the start of August, is the second foal out of a daughter of the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial scorer and G3 Bahrain Trophy third Zain Al Boldan (GB) (Poliglote {GB}) who also produced the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen winner Poetic Dream (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}) and G3 Prix Francois Boutin scorer Who Knows (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Her 2-year-old filly Ocean Bliss (Ire) is by El Kabeir, while she also has a yearling filly by Raven's Pass.

Siyouni’s Treasure Trove Takes The Round Tower

Backing up a week after her impressive success in the five-furlong Listed Roses S. at York, Merry Fox Studs' homebred Treasure Trove (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) upped her game again to capture Saturday's G3 Heider Family Stables Round Tower S. at The Curragh. ]

Held up towards the rear early by Billy Lee, the Paddy Twomey-trained 6-4 favourite was produced late as the 'TDN Rising Star' Apricot Twist (Ire) (Expert Eye {GB}) started to flag on the lead and her thrust proved strong enough to deny fellow closer Ocean Quest (Ire) (Sioux Nation) by a short head. There was a neck back to Coralillo (Ire) (Havana Grey {GB}) in third, as Apricot Twist faded to be half a length behind in fourth looking as if the six-furlong trip stretched her.

Having met a trio of leading Ballydoyle 2-year-olds on her first three starts in The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), Treasure Trove eventually lost her maiden status by 4 1/2 lengths at Down Royal June 17 before running third in the July 20 Listed Marwell S. at Naas. Denied by a short-head by Mauiewowie (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in the Aug. 13 Listed Curragh S., she excelled at York but was up to six furlongs for the first time since the May 15 G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. on the only occasion that she had failed to make the frame when fifth.

“It was a big ask to go Saturday, Saturday, Saturday in two different countries,” Twomey said. “She's got the mental attitude for it. She's tough, she's versatile and she's a two-year-old. They would like to keep her busy and the [GI] Breeders Cup Juvenile Sprint on the grass in Keeneland is a possibility.”

Treasure Trove is out of the Listed Radley S. third Pichola Dance (Ire) (Distorted Humor), whose dam is an unraced full-sister to the Sadler's Wells pair of group 1 winners Listen (Ire) and Sequoyah (Ire). The latter was later responsible for the four-times Group 1-winning sire and dual Guineas hero Henrythenavigator and his G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas-placed full-sister Queen Cleopatra (Ire) (Kingmambo) who is also the second dam of the Derby runner-up Cliffs of Moher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Also related to Galileo's Irish Guineas hero Magician (Ire), her daughter of Blue Point (Ire) is due to sell at the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2, while she also has a filly foal by Blame to whom she was bred back to for 2023.

Newbloods Set for Saturday Launch

Thursday saw the final fields take shape for Saturday's flat turf season prologues at Doncaster and The Curragh and with them the sensation of new winds careening the established order. While the hardened tifosi look to the established pillar of the Town Moore fixture, the Lincoln Handicap, the breeding merchants will pivot towards the arrival of untested and unproven stock in the card's “Brocklesby” and in the Co. Kildare venue's opening maiden. These two juvenile medleys contain the first runners for some of Europe's most enticing first-season sires, with the Brocklesby featuring progeny by Expert Eye (GB), Havana Grey (Ire) and Massaat (Ire) and the Curragh's curtain-raiser boasting a daughter of Sioux Nation.

Juddmonte's Expert Eye was precocious enough himself and being by Acclamation (GB) from the immediate family of the top-class 2-year-old Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy) it would be no surprise to see the Ian Williams-trained I Still Have Faith (GB) out of the fast The Thrill Is Gone (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) supply a champagne launch at Doncaster. Mickley Stud's Massaat has a pair in the same race in Evolicatt (GB)–from the David Evans yard always to be feared and respected in equal measure in these early speed tests–and the Adrian Nicholls-trained Mascapone (GB), while that also applies to Whitsbury Manor Stud's Havana Grey. His two are the geldings Knowwhatimeanharry (GB), from the Bill Turner stable successful in the Brocklesby in 2013, and Rocking Ends (GB) who represents Brett Johnson's Epsom establishment.

Coolmore's G1 Phoenix S. hero Sioux Nation, who takes up the baton from Scat Daddy's Caravaggio and No Nay Never, is already hot favourite with the English and Irish bookies to be leading first-season sire and he has the Jessie Harrington-trained filly Ocean Quest (Ire) in The Curragh's 'Alkumait Standing At Castlefield Stud With A €10,000 Bonus Irish EBF Maiden.'

“Ocean Quest has been exciting us at home and she's done everything nicely,” her trainer said.

At this stage, when everything is to be played for, these flurries will give initial shape to the landscape of 2022.
