Cupid Filly Earns OBS Bullet Wednesday

The under-tack show ahead of next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training reached its halfway point with its third session Wednesday and a filly by Cupid (hip 576) became the second juvenile of the week to work a quarter-mile in :20 2/5. Out of Callipepla (Yes It's True), the bay filly is consigned by Jenn and Quincy Adams's Q Bar J Thoroughbreds.

“That was a 'wow' work,” Quincy Adams said Wednesday afternoon. “She galloped out strong. She's so classy. She is just a princess. She walked back to the barn like an older horse. She's a cool horse.”

Q Bar J purchased the filly for $42,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic October Yearling Sale.

“She was just big and scopey and had muscle like she was going to be fast, but also looks like she could get two turns,” Adams said. “She's filled out in all the right places. She has that big hip that everybody likes–that big motor–and she's got a real big slinky walk. She has some scope to her and she's got some size.”

The filly is from the first crop of GI Gold Cup at Santa Anita winner Cupid (Tapit).

“We've had three Cupids and we really liked all of them,” Adams said. “They've all been kind of different, but the biggest thing that I've seen is that they all have good minds.”

A filly (hip 317) by another Coolmore first-crop sire, champion Classic Empire, worked the bullet quarter-mile of :20 2/5 during Tuesday's second session of the six-day under-tack show.

Twenty-eight juveniles shared Wednesday's fastest furlong time of :10 flat. Three were from Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables consignment, which sent out one of three juveniles by Juddmonte's late champion Arrogate to share the day's fastest furlong.

Hip 490, a gray colt by Arrogate (Unbridled's Song), turned in his :10 flat breeze just minutes into the day's session. Out of Ask the Question (Silver Deputy), he is a half-brother to multiple Grade I winner Heart to Heart (English Channel) and was purchased by Dunne for $155,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale on behalf of the pinhooking partnership responsible for last year's highest-priced colt, a $1.25-million son of Quality Road.

“He's been one of our talking horses all year,” Dunne said. “He's just a beautiful horse. He's got the best of both worlds. He's got the stretch and length of an Unbridled's Song and he's got the power of a Silver Deputy. He's a really nice colt.”

Wavertree also sent out a filly by Curlin (hip 594) to work in :10 flat Wednesday. Out of the unraced Catch the Flag (A.P. Indy), a full-sister to Canadian champion Catch the Thrill, the juvenile was purchased privately after RNA'ing for $120,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase.

“The Curlin is a beauty,” Dunne said. “She is as pretty as a picture, a medium-sized filly with a ton of class. She has always worked well and we weren't surprised when she showed up to work today.”

Rounding out the trio of Wavertree's :10 flat workers was hip 530, a son of Runhappy out of Bible Belt (Pulpit). The dark bay colt is a half-brother to graded placed Hardworkcleanlivin (Colonel John). He was purchased by Columbia Bloodstock for $250,000 as a weanling at the 2019 Keeneland November sale before RNA'ing for $120,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“The Runhappy was an expensive foal who went into a yearling sale when Runhappy was not the flavor of the month, shall we say. So they called an audible and figured they would give him more time,” Dunne said. “He was an expensive foal and when you look at him, you can see why.”

Wavertree had one of six juveniles to work in :9 4/5 Tuesday, when hip 253 shared the week's fastest furlong so far. Bred by Brenda and Philip Robertson, the son of Cairo Prince RNA'd for $35,000 at Keeneland last September.

“He's a really cool horse,” Dunne said. “Philip Robertson owns him and he really liked him as a yearling. He drew one of the later books at Keeneland and he wasn't willing to give him away. He figured he would take a shot down here and it looks like he might have been right.”

The majority of Wavertree's OBS March consignment worked quarter-miles at the under-tack show ahead of last month's sale, but an increasing emphasis on gallop-out times prompted Dunne to limit his April consignment to furlong works.

“Regardless of how far a horse works, they want to clock them galloping out from the wire to the five-eighths pole, which is an extra three-eighths of a mile,” Dunne explained. “They just do the gallop-outs by how fast they went, not by how far they went. The horses who go eighths obviously gallop out a better three-eighths than the horses who went a quarter. We had some horses that I thought worked really, really well in March going quarters and they wanted to come back and knock them for how they galloped out. Whereas if they had gone eighths, that wouldn't have been an issue. To my mind, there is no advantage to going a quarter anymore. It's all become too much about what they do after the wire as opposed to what they do to the wire. So that was our reasoning to backing them up.”

In addition to hip 490, Arrogate also had a pair of fillies share Wednesday's furlong bullet. Hip 463, a daughter of multiple graded stakes winner Amen Hallelujah (Montbrook), was purchased for $150,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale by Nice Guys Stables and worked in :10 flat for Mayberry Farm.

Also working in :10 flat, hip 486 is a daughter of multiple Grade I winner Artemis Agrotera (Roman Ruler) who is consigned by Sequel Bloodstock on behalf of Chester and Mary Broman. Her half-brother Chestertown (Tapit) topped the 2019 OBS March sale when selling for $2 million.

Also working in :10 flat Wednesday were:

Classic Empire Filly Sets Quarter-Mile Mark at OBS

The under-tack show for next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training continued Tuesday with a livelier track that saw six horses break the :10 flat mark and a filly by Classic Empire turn in the fastest quarter-mile work of the week so far.

Working early in the day's first set Tuesday, a chestnut filly from the first crop of juvenile champion Classic Empire (hip 317) zipped her quarter-mile in :20 2/5. The juvenile is consigned by Keiber Rengifo's Golden Rock Thoroughbreds on behalf of breeders Gabriel and Aisling Duignan of Springhouse Farm.

“She worked really well today,” Rengifo, who was aboard for the work, said. “She just repeated what she had been doing the last couple months at the farm where she showed a lot of talent on the dirt. So we weren't surprised by the time she did over here at OBS because she was working unbelievably the last couple months. The way she worked today is the way she was training the last 60 days.”

The filly is out of the unraced Tigress Tale (Tale of the Cat), who is a half-sister to graded winner Stays in Vegas (City Zip). She RNA'd for $37,000 at Keeneland last September.

“I was one of the bidders,” Rengifo said. “I loved the way she was built, she is a nice-looking filly and I loved the way she looked at Keeneland. I bid almost $27,000, but she didn't make it to the reserve and the breeders still own her. We were talking to Spider and Aisling and they gave me the opportunity to train her.”

Golden Rock, which has 21 juveniles consigned to the Spring sale, was also represented Tuesday by a pair of :10 flat workers: a filly by Lord Nelson (hip 368, :10 flat); and a colt by Tiznow (hip 376, :10 flat).

In addition to breezing all his own horses, Rengifo also works horses for Karl Keegan's Lucan Bloodstock, Scott Kintz's Six K's Training and Sales and Juan Centeno's All Dreams Equine.

“The track was a little bit better today than it was yesterday because of all the water from the thunder storms Sunday,” Rengifo said. “There was still a lot of water in the track Monday. I saw a lot of good horses breezing today, it's 100% a better track today. But the fast horses are still going fast. We had a :10 flat in the last set, so it was pretty consistent if you had the right horse.”

While 13 horses shared Monday's bullet furlong time of :10 flat, six broke through that mark to work the co-fastest time of :9 4/5 Tuesday.

Among them was a filly by Into Mischief (hip 288) who worked in :9 4/5 for Mayberry Farm. The bay filly is out of Take Charge (Hard Spun), a daughter of multiple graded placed Hidden Reserve (Mr. Prospector) and a full-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Reload and a half to graded winners Philanthropist (Kris S.) and Defer (Danzig).

The juvenile was purchased for $300,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale by Paul Manganaro, Nice Guys Stable and Steve Hornstock.

“Visually and emotionally pleasing,” Manganaro said of his reaction to the bullet breeze. “She had been under the care of April Mayberry and her team and they had thought highly of her for a long time. So it was nice to see the talent we thought she had come out at the right time. I've been in this business long enough, so I know anything can happen. But it was exciting at the same time. When she crossed that finish line, it was like watching one of your siblings score the winning goal or touchdown in a sports event.”

Of the filly's appeal at last year's September sale, Manganaro said, “The head of our selection team was the legendary John Williams. So the main attraction was John liked her physically. Then obviously being by arguably the hottest stallion in the world right now in Into Mischief sealed the deal. And she's from a wonderful deep family.”

The initial plan was for the partners to race the filly, but high praise from Mayberry convinced them to test the market.

“We bought this filly and a Gun Runner filly at the Keeneland sale last year without any intention of pinhooking, but April's reports were that she was a very talented filly,” Manganaro said. “When we saw the demand for Into Mischief in the marketplace, we decided, if she can bring us there, let's test the market. She brought us to this point, so we are very happy with that.”

Manganaro, Nice Guys Stables and Hornstock do have a horse to look forward to at the racetrack in impressive maiden winner Defeater (Union Rags).

“We have a few horses together,” Manganaro said of the partnership. “We have a pretty nice 3-year-old colt who was with Tom Amoss named Defeater. We were just starting to get Derby fever with him and he got a slight injury, but he'll be back soon.”

A colt from the first crop of Midnight Storm (hip 264) also shared the co-fastest :9 4/5 furlong time for G.W. Parrish's Parrish Farms.

“He prepped really well, so I was expecting him to work well,” Parrish said of the colt.

Parrish and his wife Karen purchased the dark bay colt for $34,000 at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

“My wife picked him out, so she was very happy,” he said with a chuckle. “He had a nice head and a nice eye. I did the bidding, but she liked him, so I kind of listened to her–happy wife, happy life.”

The juvenile is out of Summer of Joy (Sky Mesa), a full-sister to multiple graded placed Spectacular Sky.

Also sharing the bullet furlong time Tuesday were: a colt by Speightstown (hip 232, :9 4/5) consigned by Centofanti Thoroughbreds; a colt by Cairo Prince (hip 253, :9 4/5) consigned by Wavertree Stables; a colt by Twirling Candy (hip 262, :9 4/5) consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales; and a filly by Daredevil (hip 395, :9 4/5) consigned by Eddie Woods.

The under-tack show continues through Saturday and commences each day at 8 a.m. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday with bidding beginning each day at 10:30 a.m.

Violence Filly Fastest at OBS Monday

The under-tack show for next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, delayed a day by Sunday's stormy weather, got underway Monday in Central Florida with 13 juveniles sharing the bullet furlong time of :10 flat and a filly by Violence turning in the day's fastest quarter-mile breeze.

Eddie Woods consigns hip 107, a daughter of Violence out of the unraced Royal Paradise (Unbridled's Song). The bay filly claimed the session's quarter-mile bullet time of :20 3/5.

“I was expecting a good work for her,” Woods said Monday afternoon. “You can't tell someone a horse is going to go in :20 3/5, it's ridiculous. But whatever the fastest work was going to be of the day, she was going to be really right on it.”

The filly is a half-sister to stakes-placed Bano Solo (Goldencents), who sold for $400,000 at the 2018 OBS March sale. She was purchased for $50,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“She's tall, leggy and she's got some length to her,” Woods said. “She's out of an Unbridled's Song mare and you can kind of see that in her. And she's bigger than I'd ever thought she'd be. She was a medium-sized yearling, but she's a big, beautiful filly now.”

Woods sent out six juveniles to work at OBS Monday.

“We had a good day, it all went pretty well,” he said of his results. “There were no surprises. Everyone looked to come back well, so we are happy about everything.”

Of the track following a day of intense rain storms Sunday, Woods said, “I think the track was very fair. There were a couple of :20 4/5s and :10 flats. There weren't any :9 and changes and that's kind of the way the track should be. We had so much rain yesterday and that track acts a little bit like a sponge at times with a lot of water where it absorbs some of the stuff and expands a little bit. We're talking minute amounts, but minute amounts effect times. So it will be interesting to see how it is as we go forward in the week. Hopefully it stays the same.”

Becky Thomas's Sequel Bloodstock sent out four New York-breds to work Monday and came away with three sharing the bullet furlong time.

Leading off the trio was hip 4, a daughter of Laoban out of Paper Kite (Bernardini). The bay filly, bred by Sequel, turned in her :10 flat work early in the day's first session.

“When you see me have a horse that goes first, that's usually a horse that I think a lot of in terms of speed,” Thomas said, adding of the filly, “She's a pretty mover out of a Bernardini mare. She is very nice. We're happy with her.”

Another Sequel homebred, a son of the operation's stallion Mission Impazible (hip 135), also turned in a :10 flat work. The gray colt is out of Scott's Aly Cat (Tale of the Cat).

“I bought [Scott's Aly Cat] from Roy Lerman from his Lambholm program,” Thomas explained. “We bought her in foal to Mission because I had seen her year-before baby and liked it. He has a little bit of a Tale of the Cat look and yet has a little more leg to him because of the Unbridled's Song from Mission. I gave that mare away on a co-breed deal to one of our breeders who is probably very happy today.”

Also working in :10 flat from the Sequel consignment was hip 187, a first-crop son of Grade I winner Cupid out of Silver Sands (El Prado {Ire}). Thomas purchased the colt for $57,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale.

“He's a May 25 foal and he's got a lot of length and a lot of stride,” Thomas said. “He belonged to a friend of mine who bred him in New York, so you always feel good when you can give back to our whole community. That horse was a Hidden Lake horse and they like to support our stallions, so I try hard on those breeders who support our stallions.”

Rounding out Sequel's team of New York-breds working Monday was a colt by Central Banker (hip 115), who worked in :10 1/5. Thomas is consigning the colt on behalf of breeders Chester and Mary Broman.

“Mr. Broman is another one who supports the New York program,” Thomas said. “So it's always fun when you have home-team horses.”

Despite the heavy rains Sunday, Thomas called an audible and sent her horses out to train following the cancellation of the breeze show.

“Normally we don't train the day before the breeze, but because they had already had one day off, I didn't want to not train,” Thomas said. “So we trained yesterday heading in.”

She added of the weather, “It was terrible. I realized we were about to get a deluge right in the middle of it.”

De Meric Sales sent out a pair of bullet workers Monday: a son of American Freedom (hip 78, :10 flat); and a colt by Classic Empire (hip 87, :10 flat).

Also represented by a pair of bullets Monday was Grassroots Training and Sales, which sent out a filly by Dialed In (hip 113, :10 flat); and a filly by Violence (hip 190, :10 flat).

The brigade of bullet workers Monday was completed by: hip 48, a colt by Kantharos consigned by Julie Davies (:10 flat); hip 108, a colt by Tapiture consigned by Tradewinds Farm (:10 flat); hip 118, a colt by Gun Runner consigned by Eisaman Equine (:10 flat); a filly by Noble Mission (GB) (hip 163) consigned by Top Line Sales (:10 flat); a colt by Dialed In (hip 175) consigned by Wavertree Stables (:10 flat); and a filly by Klimt (hip 203) consigned by Randy Bradshaw (:10 flat).

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning each day at 8 a.m. The OBS Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday. Bidding begins each day at 10:30 a.m.
