Laoban Filly Tops OBS Wednesday

A filly by fast-starting young sire Laoban (Hip 805) topped Wednesday's open session and the entirety of the OBS Winter Mixed Sale, selling to Nick de Meric, who signed as Sand Hill Stables, for $175,000. Consigned by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, the bay was bred in New York by the late Kenny LeJeune.

A colt from the first crop of MGISW Mor Spirit (Eskendereya) (Hip 616) brought the day's second-highest price, hammering for $115,000 to bloodstock agent Donato Lanni. The bay was bred in Florida by Beth Bayer, who consigned the colt.

“He was a cool horse,” said Lanni. “When you lock onto a nice horse, you have to stretch a little bit more. He is just a good-looking, athletic racehorse. I just hope we get lucky.”

An $85,000 FTKOCT buy, Mor Spirit was picked out by Lanni on behalf of his owner for $650,000 at the FTFMAR sale the following year. He went on to win six of his 14 races, topped by a victory in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity S. and a dazzling score in the GI Met Mile.

“I was involved with the sire and he did remind me a lot of his sire,” Lanni said. “Overall, I thought the Mor Spirits looked really nice. He was just a tremendous racehorse, a really fast horse.”

A total of 231 head sold during Wednesday's open session for $2,054,800 with an average of $8,895 and median of $4,500. Throughout the two day sale, which included a consignor preferred and horses of racing age session Tuesday, 406 horses summoned $5,686,600 with an average of $14,006 and median of $6,000.

“There is a good turnout here,” said Lanni. “For a January sale, there are a lot of people here. I visited the training centers around town and there are a lot of people at the training centers, more than I've ever seen. I think people just want to get out. People just want to get on with their lives.”

Bear Brian Tops OBS Winter Mixed Sale’s Opening Session

Hip No. 368, Bear Brian, consigned by Summerfield (Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent for Stonestreet Stables LLC, went to Kerri Raven for $150,000 to top the Horses of Racing Age section on the first day of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 Winter Mixed Sale.

The 3-year-old bay colt by Tiznow, who captured a maiden special at Sam Houston Race Park on Jan. 9, is out of stakes winner Lil Super Bear, by Super Saver.

Hip No. 182, a son of Practical Joke also consigned by Summerfield, was purchased by Ronald Clark Shepherd for $130,000 to top the Consignor Preferred Session. The bay yearling colt is out of Mobeautiful, by Uncle Mo, from the family of graded stakes winner Speed Dialer.

Hip No. 321, Polterer, a 3-year-old son of Ghostzapper, went to Danny W. Brown for $110,000. Consigned by Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent), Agent, the chestnut colt is out of graded stakes winner Honey Hughes, by Henny Hughes.
J. Stable LLC paid $100,000 for Hip No. 360, Pledge, a 3-year-old filly by Candy Ride consigned by Six K's Training & Sales, Agent. A 6-1/2 length winner of a maiden special at Turfway Park on Jan. 2, she's a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Hello Don Julio out of Faithful, by Vindication.
Hip No. 25, a daughter of Mendelssohn consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, was sold to Democracy Bloodstock for $95,000. The dark bay or brown yearling filly is out of stakes placed Simply Confection, by Candy Ride (ARG), from the family of champion Ashado.

Hip No. 117, a daughter of Malibu Moon consigned by Kerri Szegi, Agent, went to Windylea Farm – NY LLC for $95,000. The bay yearling filly is out of graded stakes placed Fortunia, by Leroidesanimaux (BRZ), a half sister to grade one stakes winner Dionisia.
Hip No. 315, a son of Distorted Humor consigned by Oscar Brown Stables, was sold to Kerri Raven for $90,000. The 3-year-old bay colt, whose three eighths in :32 2/5 was co-fastest at the distance at the Under Tack Show, is out of graded stakes placed Goldstryke Glory, by Second in Command.
Hip No. 289, Street Ruckus, also consigned by Kaizen, was sold to Holly and David Wilson and Peernboom – Bowyer, LLC for $85,000. The dark bay or brown 3-year-old colt by Street Boss, a half brother to grade one stakes placed Sir Sahib, is out of Xs Belle, by Dynaformer.
Hip No. 307, Waltzing Champ, by Ghoszapper, went to Al and Bill Ulwelling for $85,000. The 4-year-old chestnut gelding, consigned by Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent), Agent, is out of First Waltz, by Medaglia d'Oro, a daughter of graded stakes winner Spring Waltz.
Hip No. 338, Brother Brody, consigned by L. G. Agent, was sold to Emerald Sales, Agent for Michael Eiserman for $80,000. The 3-year-old dark bay or brown colt by Brody's Cause, who breezed three eighths in :32 3/5 at the Under Tack Show, is out of Mesa Mist, by Sky Mesa, from the family of graded stakes placed Logan's Mist.
DKW Racing paid $67,000 for Hip No. 90, a daughter of Hard Spun consigned by C & S Thoroughbred Sales, Agent. The dark bay or brown yearling filly is out of Cleo, by Pioneerof the Nile, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Prospective Saint.
Hip No. 63, a daughter of Twirling Candy consigned by Pelican State Thoroughbreds, Agent, was sold for $65,000 to Al and Bill Ulwelling. The bay yearling filly is out of American Kitty, by Tale of the Cat, a half sister to stakes placed American Diva.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 98 horses sold for a total of $1,893,300, compared with 85 horses grossing $1,912,300 in 2020. The average price was $19,319 compared with $22,498 a year ago, while the median price was $10,050 compared with $13,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 30.9 percent; it was 37.9 percent last year.

For the Horses of Racing Age session, 73 horses grossed $1,676,500 compared with 70 selling for a total of $1,366,900 in 2020. The average was $22,966, up from $19,527 a year ago, while the median price was $13,000 compared to $11,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 12 percent; it was 11.4 percent in 2020.

Distorted Humor, More Than Ready Colts Fastest At OBS Winter Mixed Sale’s Under Tack Show

Colts by More Than Ready and Distorted Humor breezed three-eighths in :32 2/5 to post the fastest works at the distance at the Under Tack Show for Racing Age section of the Ocala Breeders' Sale Company's 2021 Winter Mixed Sale.

Hip No. 306, a dark bay or brown 4-year-old colt by More Than Ready consigned Woodard Sales, Agent, is out of Fanfire, by Elusive Quality, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Straight Story.
Hip No. 315, consigned by Oscar Brown Stables, is a 3-year-old bay colt by Distorted Humor out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Goldstryke Glory, by Second in Command.

Two horses turned in three-eighths in :32 3/5.

Hip No. 262, Herecomesyourman, a 7-year-old gray or roan gelding by Distorted Humor consigned by Woodard Sales, Agent, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Know More out of Seattle Qui, by Seattle Slew.
Hip No. 338, Brother Brody, consigned by L. G. Agent, is a 3-year-old dark bay or brown colt by Brody's Cause out of Mesa Mist, by Sky Mesa, from the family of graded stakes placed Logan's Mist.

Three worked in the distance in :32 4/5.

Hip No. 256, consigned by Wes Carter, Agent, is a 3-year-old dark bay or brown filly by Tourist out of stakes winner Red's Round Table, by Cuvee, from the family of graded stakes winner Sun and Snow.
Hip No. 274, Lemon Creek Louie, a 3-year-old bay gelding by Beautyinthepulpit also consigned by Wes Carter, is out of Swimmer, by Rock Slide, from the family of stakes winner Miss Running Vany.
Hip No. 303, Tipsy Tourist, a 3-year-old dark bay or brown filly by Tourist consigned by L. G. Agent, is out of Dyslexicperfection, by Congrats, a daughter of stakes winner Perigee Girl.

Hip No. 278, consigned by Wes Carter, Agent, is a 3-year-old dark bay or brown gelding by Wicked Strong out of Tricky Game, by Medaglia d'Oro, a half-sister to stakes-placed Twenty Eight Hours.
Hip No. 312, Edmund Fitzgerald, a 4-year-old bay colt by Carpe Diem consigned by Woodard Sales, Agent, is out of graded stakes winner Gitchee Goomie, by City Zip.
Hip No. 349, Angel Embrace, consigned by Rod McVey, Agent, is a 3-year-old bay filly by Winslow Homer out of St. Borealis, by War Chant, from the family of stakes winner Dancewiththebride.

Hip No. 362, Kramden, scored at Tampa Bay Downs on Jan. 24. The 4-year-old gelding by Kitten's Joy, consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, is out of First in Time, by Broken Vow, and is a full brother to graded stakes placed Surf and Turf.

Hip No. 10, a 2-year-old filly by The Fifth Sun consigned by Coolmade, Agent, has newly-minted stakes-placed half-sister in Erawan, third in Laurel's Howard County Stakes on Dec. 26.
Hip No. 518, a 2-year-old colt by Noble Bird consigned by Sue Vacek, Agent, is a half-sister to Adios Trippi, winner of Tampa Bay's Gasparilla Stakes on Jan. 16 and third in the Cash Run Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan. 1.

The sale begins on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 10:30 a.m. with Hip No.'s 1 -183 cataloged in the Consignor Preferred Session. The Horses of Racing Session, cataloged as Hip No.'s 251 – 371, begins immediately following the conclusion of the Preferred Session. The Open Session, with Hip No.'s 451 – 805 cataloged, is set for Wednesday, Jan. 27 and will also begin at 10:30 a.m.

OBS Winter Mixed Sale Kicks Off Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company kicks off their 2021 season Tuesday with the two-day OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Tuesday's session starts with a 183-head consignor-preferred session which will be immediately followed by a 120-head Horses of Racing Age session. Wednesday's open session consists of 354 horses and is a mix of broodmares and short yearlings. Both sessions start at 10:30 a.m.

Those numbers include late supplements. The supplemental catalogues will be available on the grounds and those additional horses will sell immediately following the original catalogue.

“We are cautiously optimistic,” OBS's Tod Wojciechowski said. “We have a good book of yearlings and mares, as well as some nice racing age options. We saw some bright spots in [Keeneland] January and hopefully some of those bright spots carry down here.”

Covering stallions include Enticed, Collected, Speightster and Tapit, as well as Florida-based stallions, such as St. Patrick's Day, Khozan and Girvin. Short yearlings on offer include the offspring of such stallions as Accelerate, Always Dreaming, Bolt d'Oro, Constitution, Into Mischief and Mendelssohn.

During Monday's under-tack preview of the auction, a pair of colts shared the fastest three-furlong work of :32 2/5.

Load to Fire (More Than Ready), hip 306, an unraced 4-year-old colt, worked his :32 2/5 three furlongs for consignor Woodard Sales. Hip 315, an unraced 3-year-old colt by Distorted Humor, worked in :32 2/5 for consignor Oscar Brown Stables.

Four horses enter the Winter sales ring off recent wins on the racetrack. Pledge (Candy Ride {Arg}) (hip 360) broke her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths at Turfway Park Jan. 2; Kramden (Kitten's Joy) (hip 362) won at Tampa Bay Downs Sunday; Bear Brian (Tiznow) (hip 368) broke his maiden on debut at Sam Houston Race Park Jan. 9; and Lower for Longer (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) (hip 370) broke her maiden at Tampa Bay Downs Sunday.

The 2020 renewal of this auction generated $4,957,800 of turnover from 359 transactions with an average of $13,810 and median of $7,000. The sales-topper was a $165,000 yearling colt by Union Rags, who was purchased by Blue Sky Stables.

OBS will continue to implement COVID-19 safety protocols and provide online bidding.

“We are still committed to trying to provide the safest environment possible,” Wojciechowski said “We will continue with the COVID protocols we initiated last year. In addition, there will be a mask mandate for inside the building and the back walking ring. It is obviously something we have to deal with. That is one reason the online bidding was implemented, so buyers unable or unwilling to travel can still shop.”
