Key of Life Becomes First Black-Type Winner for Mo Town

Key of Life became the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Uncle Mo) with a decisive score in Keeneland's Myrtlewood S. Friday. Hammered down to 3-5 favoritism off consecutive scores, the $350,000 OBSAPR acquisition seized the early advantage, zipping through a :22.34 opening quarter with a rival in hot pursuit. Turning for home in front after a half in :45.91, the bay opened up with ease in the lane to win for fun.

“She really has put it together over the last month or so,” said winning trainer Brad Cox. “Her win at Churchill she ran big, but she came back here and I thought really showed who she is opening weekend (when she won by 6 1/4 lengths). We took her back to Churchill and she was training well, and this race came up with a big field so (we decided to) give it a shot. We liked the (post position) she drew. She broke well. Very happy with her performance today.”

Third on debut behind a 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy performance form Summer Promise (Uncle Mo) at Churchill Downs June 25, Key of Life broke through next out there Aug. 13 and followed suit with an optional claimer score at this oval Oct. 7. Signator Becomes 50th Rising Star for Tapit

Signator (Tapit) earned the 'TDN Rising Star' tag with a good-looking score at second asking at Belmont at the Big A. A $1.7-million OBSAPR acquisition after breezing in :20 4/5 for Eddie Woods, he finished up well to be second on debut going six panels at this oval Sept. 16 and was hammered down to 3-5 favoritism to go one better here. Away a beat slow from his inside stall, the gray tugged his way up the fence, sitting near the back of the tightly bunched group. Saving ground off a modest half-mile in :48.73 over a muddy surface, Signator was patiently handled under a smart ride from Javier Castellano, who didn't panic behind a wall of horses turning for home and got the opening he was looking for at the top of the lane. Signator dove through and rolled clear for an impressive 4 1/2-length score over Weekend Tizzy (Bernardini).

Signator is the 50th 'TDN Rising Star' for his perennial leading sire Tapit. He is a full-brother to $900,000 FTSAUG buy and GSW Thoughtfully. He is also a half to GSW Annual Report (Harlan's Holiday) and MSW Giant Payday (Giant's Causeway). His second dam is GISW Furlough (Easy Goer) and this is also the family of top-level scorers Dancing Spree, Fantastic Find and Finder's Fee. Signator also shares the same female family as GSW Feathered (Indian Charlie), dam of unbeaten sensation Flightline (Tapit).

OBS October Concludes With Open Session

The two-day OBS October Yearling Sale came to a close Wednesday in Ocala, Florida, with moderate declines in the relevant statistical categories.

Following on the heels of a strong Select Sale Tuesday, the action Wednesday was a bit more subdued, with 256 open yearlings reported as sold for gross receipts of $4,367,900. The average of $17,062 was down by just over 8% from last year's $18,593. The median price declined by 13.3% to $13,000, while the buyback rate was nearly double that of 2021 at 30.2% compared to 16.6% last year.

Girvin Yearlings on Top at OBS Wednesday

A colt and a filly by fast-starting freshman sire Girvin shared top billing at Wednesday's open session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Yearlings Sale when attracting matching $110,000 bids.

Michael Sucher's Champion Equine, which acquired a colt by Girvin for $140,000 at last week's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale, purchased another son of the stallion for $110,000 Wednesday. Hip 418 is out of stakes-placed Absoulute Heaven (Not for Love) and was consigned by Boutte Sales. He was bred by Tim Aheam.

Sucher, who purchased the sale-topping full-brother to multiple Grade I-winning juvenile Cave Rock (Arrogate) for $700,000 at the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale in August, campaigns first-out winner Commandant, another colt by Girvin, whom he acquired for $300,000 at the OBS April sale earlier this year.

Later in the session, the Green family's D. J. Stable, which acquired the co-toppers during Tuesday's select session of the auction, went to $110,000 to purchase a filly by Girvin (hip 610) from Camelot Acres Racing and Sales. The bay is out of Liberty Flag (Kingmambo) and is a half-sister to stakes winner Little Chesney (City Zip). The yearling was bred by Janet Erwin.

OBS October Sale Kicks Off Tuesday

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Yearling Sale kicks off Tuesday with a selected yearlings session, which will be followed by an open yearlings session Wednesday.

Tuesday's session gets underway at noon with Hips 1-185 and is followed by the supplements, which are Hips 186-209. Wednesday's session begins at 10 a.m. with Hips 251-660 and followed by a section of supplements, which are Hips 661-684.

“We are certainly excited seeing what has transpired in the yearling market so far this year,” said OBS's Tod Wojciechowski. “The graduates of this sale have been doing very well lately both at the racetrack and at the next level of the market.”

During last year's selected yearlings portion, 104 head sold for $4,539,000 with an average of $43,644 and a median of $32,000. That session was topped by a $170,000 colt by Midnight Storm.

A total of 281 yearlings sold during the open session in 2021 for a gross of $5,224,500 with an average of $18,593 and median of $15,000. The topper during that session was a $170,000 Ransom the Moon colt.

In total, 385 yearlings summoned $9,763,500 at last year's October Sale with an average of $25,360 and median of $19,000. Both of the aforementioned session/co-sale toppers were sold by Lisa McGreevy's Abbie Road Farm.

Recent noteworthy graduates of the OBS October Sale include Friday's GII J.P. Morgan Chase Jessamine S. winner Delight (Mendelssohn), GI Santa Anita Oaks winner Desert Dawn (Cupid) and MSW Outfoxed (Valiant Minister).
