Army Mule Represented By First Graded Winner in Herecomesthebride

NBS Stable and Elements Racing LLC's Danse Macabre (Army Mule) was making her seasonal debut at a juicy quote of 12-1 in Saturday's GIII Herecomesthebride S. at Gulfstream Park and fought her way to the wire to become the first graded winner for her successful young sire (by Friesan Fire) with a defeat of the U.S.-debuting Papilio (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}).

Stretching out to a route of ground for the first time and visiting the races for the first time since checking in third as the favorite in the GIII Matron S. at Aqueduct last Oct. 8, the $11,000 Keeneland January short yearling turned $55,000 OBS March breezer was eager early on, but not overly so, and settled well enough three wide and a bit more than a length off pacesetting Moonage Daydream (Candy Ride {Arg}). Put to a hard drive by Adam Beschizza while racing three deep at the three-eighths pole, Danse Macabre hit the front once heads were turned for home, but immediately had Papilio–four wide the trip–breathing down her neck. The latter drifted out in upper stretch, then came in at the furlong grounds and appeared to exchange bumps with Danse Macabre before just failing to finish her job. Cairo Consort (Cairo Prince), the odds-on pop off an amazing victory in the GIII Sweetest Chant S. last time, raced behind midfield in a race run at a modest tempo, and got home well on the grandstand side, but too late.

A debut second sprinting over the Churchill main track last June, Danse Macabre won her maiden with a 78 Beyer in a Colonial turf sprint the following month ahead of a runner-up effort in Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. Aug. 21. The chestnut filly struck from close range in the valuable Untapable S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 13 before closing her season in the Matron.

“Numbers-wise, she fit in here really well,” said trainer Kelsey Danner, winning the first graded stakes of her young career. “The distance was the question. She's trained like she wanted to go farther. Her last couple races she wanted to probably go a little farther. I think Kentucky Downs probably plays like 7 1/2 [furlongs]. She's got a lot of heart. She's just a classy filly. She does her job every day.”

Danse Macabre is the first foal to the races from her dam, a winning half-sister to three-time graded winner Cambodia (War Front), whose two Grade I placings include a third to Wuheida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the 2017 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf over a mile and a quarter. The filly's stakes-winning third dam is responsible for three-time South African champion sprinter and two-time Grade 1 winner Overarching (Arch); GSW Temeraine (Arch); SW Dead Red (Out of Place); and the dam of GI Natalma S. winner Abscond (Blame).

Sylphide is also the dam of a 2-year-old Liam's Map filly that was bought back on a bid of $240,000 at KEESEP last fall and a yearling filly by Always Dreaming. She is due for a full-sibling to Danse Macabre this season.

Munnings Filly Wins Well On Oaklawn Debut

6th-Oaklawn, $90,000, Msw, 2-25, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:11.43, sy, 2 1/2 lengths.
GROVE (f, 3, Munnings–Wishful Winking, by Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), off at odds of 9-1, took pressure inside and out for the opening half-mile of her debut run, but went through her gears in the stretch nevertheless to report home a good-looking winner. A $100,000 Fasig-Tipton July yearling turned $175,000 OBS April breezer, Grove did her pre-race work down at the Fair Grounds and stepped away smartly while joined to her inside by the rail-skimming Mary's Boon (Central Banker) and in the three path by favored Malibu Toast (Malibu Moon). Narrowly in front from between those rivals as they hit the head of the stretch, Grove put some daylight between her and the rest of the field and ran out a comfortable winner. From the extended female family of GSW and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Firing Line (Line of David) and Grade I winners Sharp Azteca (Freud) and Bowies Hero (Artie Schiller), Grove has a 2-year-old half-sister by Competitive Edge and a yearling half-brother by Omaha Beach. Gulfstream Juvenile Sale Removed From Fasig-Tipton’s 2023 Auction Calendar

Fasig-Tipton will not be holding a select 2-year-olds in training sale at Gulfstream Park in 2023. The news was first reported by the Blood-Horse.

“The Gulfstream Park facilities are not available for 2023 due to some stabling issues,” said Fasig-Tipton's President and CEO Boyd Browning.

“The stalls are not available this year. We learned about this in the fall, and we determined this year that the best approach would be to concentrate our efforts on the Midlantic Sale, which last year produced the highest price of a 2-year-old in training,” said Browning, referring to Hejazi (Bernardini), who brought $3.55 million at Timonium this past May, and who has gone on to be a graded stakes performer at two for trainer Bob Baffert.

“The sale also has an amazing record of Grade I success of graduates on the racetrack over the last five years. We are strong advocates and believers of the importance of buyers having the opportunity to watch horses breeze on a dirt racetrack, and have a great deal of confidence in the Timonium sales venue.”

Browning said that it was too early to say if the sale would return to Gulfstream in future years. The 2023 Timonium Sale will be held from May 22-23. There will also be an additional one-day juvenile sale for the first time in Timonium June 28.

A total of 35 juveniles brought $13.155 million (17 RNAs), led by a $1.2-million Bold d'Oro filly, at the 2022 Gulfstream Sale. At the 2021 renewal, 67 head brought $25.36 million (38 RNAs), including $1.7-million graduate and MGISW Taiba (Gun Runner).

“I don't think it's a surprise to anybody,” said Niall Brennan, who consigned 2015 Fasig-Tipton Florida sale graduate and subsequent GI Kentucky Derby and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Nyquist (Uncle Mo).

“The reality is they have struggled with that sale for the last few years and especially this year. You can look at the numbers yourself–the number of horses that were catalogued versus the number of horses that went to the breeze show and the amount of horses that actually went through the ring after the breeze show. And the last couple of years, it's been significant. It's very hard to have a select sale that way.”

He continued, “It doesn't impact the landscape at all in my opinion. Most consignors that are around here [in Ocala], it's so much easier for us to sell at OBS in March, April and even June. Because it's right here. We don't have to leave home. It's very expensive to go to Miami and that's not Fasig's fault.

“The South Florida Sale for years was a big thing. But the reality is times change. Their response was to put on two sales in Maryland. Time will tell if it's a good move. They've been oversubscribed to their May sale for a few years now.”

Leading consignor Eddie Woods concluded, “It's a shame that sale had to go. It was a great marketplace for many years. But it just proved tougher and tougher to sell there. All you could sell was the cream of the crop. OBS has become king in the 2-year-old market worldwide. So, we'll just go there. You hear some negatives about the synthetic track, but the good judges can pick the good horses out of there and pay a lot of money for them, too.”
