Bolt d’Oro Colt Overcomes Early Trouble, Gets Up Late at Santa Anita

2nd-Santa Anita, $68,000, Msw, 6-12, 2yo, 5f, :59.77, ft, 1 length.

AGENCY (c, 2, Bolt d'Oro–Queen of May, by Bernardini) broke poorly and appeared beaten for much of the stretch, but came alive with a flying finish in the last sixteenth to get up and become the fourth winner for his freshman sire (by Medaglia d'Oro) Sunday at Santa Anita. A $100,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $400,000 OBS March 2-year-old after breezing a quarter-mile in :20 4/5, the dark bay showed five works over this track, most recently going five panels from the gate in 1:01 1/5 (16/42) June 5, and was made the 23-10 second choice. Bobbling a bit coming out of the stalls and spotting the field several lengths, he checked off heels in the opening furlong before finding his way into fifth behind a three-way pace duel through a :22.35 quarter. Angling into the five path turning for home, Agency started to find his best stride outside the sixteenth pole and swept past the tiring pace players late to score by a length. Longshot Crowning Gold (Harbor the Gold) edged fellow pace player Pacific States (West Coast) for second. The winner's dam, a half-sister to MGSW/GISP Tizaqueena (Tiznow), produced an Air Force Blue colt this term. Sales History: $100,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP; $400,000 2yo '22 OBSMAR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $40,200. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Expensive West Coast Colt Gives Sire First Winner

Carolyn Wilson's Fit to Fly (West Coast), a $570,000 OBSMAR acquisition, lived up to his name with a dominant 7 1/4-length score, becoming her freshman sire (by Flatter)'s first winner. Hammered down to even-money favoritism for this debut, the bay went straight to the front and never looked back, clear at every call to win for fun over stablemate Rivzonaroll (Good Samaritan). A $155,000 FTKJUL yearling, she more than tripled that price as a juvenile after breezing in :21 flat for Eddie Woods. Fit to Fly is a half to SW Keke Kimono (Laoban) and has a yearling full-brother. Her SP dam Kimono was bred to Win Win Win for this season, but no live foal has been reported yet.

3rd-Hawthorne, $43,200, Msw, 6-11, 2yo, 4 1/2f, :52.53, ft, 7 1/4 lengths.

Devious Dame a First Black-Type Winner for Girvin in Astoria

John Oxley's Devious Dame (Girvin) ooked to be making hard work of it while consigned to an imperfect trip in Thursday's $150,000 Astoria S. at Belmont Park, but the 2-5 favorite on the strength of a 5 1/2-length debut success on Churchill debut May 5 leveled off nicely when asked to claim pacesetting Alexis's Storm (Race Day) passing the eighth pole and glided clear to become the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Tale of Ekati).

Away only fairly from the five hole, the $240,000 OBS March breezer (:20 4/5) was last for a few strides not long after the start and raced in fourth spot, three wide and busily ridden, through the middle stages. Finding her best stride as they reached the quarter pole, Devious Dame steadily reeled in her front-running rival and cruised under the line to score unextended. Alexis's Storm held second ahead of Girl Bye (Cajun Breeze) in third.

“We came up here with the intention of winning but got to thinking that we'd rather let her settle a bit more than being adamant about just rushing her off her feet,” said winning trainer Norm Casse. “I do think she's a two-turn filly and we need to teach her some of that patience now. Thankfully, it paid off.”

Casse indicated that the 6 1/2-furlong GIII Adirondack S. at Saratoga Aug. 7 could be next for his charge, followed by the GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland in October.

Devious Dame is out of an unraced half-sister to MSW & MGSP Courtesan (Street Sense) and SW Chary (Montbrook). The extended female family includes GISWs Discreet Cat (Forestry), Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft) and Awesome Maria (Maria's Mon) and SW/MGISP Pretty Wild (Wild Again). The Shady Lady produced colts by Awesome Slew in each of the last two seasons. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
