PARAIBA TOURMALINE (f, 2, Malibu Moon–Private Jet, by Smart Strike) was led out unsold at last year's Keeneland September sale on a bid of $70,000 and made that decision look shrewd when fetching $450,000 from Katsumi Yoshida at OBS March (:9 4/5). The Mar. 1 foal is out of a full-sister to dual Eclipse Award winner and Coolmore stallion Lookin At Lucky and a half-sister to MGSW Kensei (Mr. Greeley) and MGSW 'TDN Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings). MALEFICENT LOVE (f, 2, Arrogate–Highway Mary, by U S Ranger), a half-sister to Grade I-winning turf miler Hit The Road (More Than Ready), is out of an unraced daughter of GII E.P. Taylor S. winner Wandering Star (Red Ransom), also the dam of G1SW War Command (War Front) and GSW Naval Officer (Tale of the Cat). Maleficent Love was a $110,000 KEESEP buyback last fall. Also debuting is Godolphin homebred CACCIUCCO (f, 2, Nyquist–Livorno, by Bernardini), the first foal out of a half-sister to SW & GISP Arethusa (A.P. From Dusk A First Japanese Winner for Bolt d’Oro

5th-Kokura, ¥13,400,000 ($95,295), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT, 1:10.1, yl.
FROM DUSK (c, 2, Bolt d'Oro–Foolish Cause, by Giant's Causeway) was crunched down to 9-10 favoritism to open his account at first asking and gutted it out over a turf course that might have been easier underfoot than he prefers. Away alertly, the dark bay set the pace, but had company to his outside in the form of third choice Yoshi Tanrei (Jpn) (Satono Aladdin {Jpn}) as they raced into the turn. More or less on even terms as they cut the corner into the straight, From Dusk poked his head in front while fairly conservatively handled approaching the final furlong and fought on bravely to score by three-parts of a length. “He had a nice draw and broke well from the gate,” said winning jockey Kohei Matsuyama. “He was very fresh and fit and had plenty left at the finish.” He is the first Japanese starter for his freshman sire (by Medaglia d'Oro) and became his 13th winner at the time. A $200,000 graduate of last year's Keeneland September Sale, From Dusk was knocked down to trainer Hideyuki Mori for $900,000 at this year's OBS March Sale after the Top Line Sales-consigned colt worked a furlong in :9 4/5. On behalf of this owner, Mori also bought Clos de Mesnil (Practical Joke) from Top Line for a sales-topping $750,000 at OBS last March. The filly is a three-time winner from seven starts in Japan. From Dusk is a half-brother to Foolish Humor (Distorted Humor), SW-US, SP-Can, $123,803, and his dam is a half-sister to the late three-time Grade I-winning turf router Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic). The latter would go on to hit the board in this year's GII San Felipe S. and GIII Affirmed S. The colt's SW/MGSP dam was purchased for $350,000 by WinStar at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and she has since amassed a perfect produce record from three previous foals to the races. 11th-KOK, Kokura Nisai S.-G3, ¥58.6k ($418k), 2yo, 1200mT
PROTOPOROS (JPN) (c, 2, War Front–Cavale Doree {Fr}, by Sunday Break {Jpn}) is the first foal from his French Group 3-winning dam, also third in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and who was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for the equivalent of $883,272 at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. The bay debuted in the Carrot Farm green-and-white hoops going this distance at Chukyo June 16 and made light work of that group, graduating by 3 1/2 lengths as a 2-5 shot should (video, SC 1). Honor Code’s Home Cooking Sizzles in Del Mar Rising Star Romp

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman's Home Cooking (Honor Code), beaten at 1-2 debuting three weeks earlier at Del Mar, proved that money right and then some with a dominant off-the-pace romp to earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors Sunday at the seaside oval.

Coming into her debut off a best-of-124 half-mile move in :46 flat July 24, the $11,000 Fasig-Tipton October buy turned $260,000 OBS March purchase (:9 4/5 breeze) was pressed through a swift :21.44 quarter and won the battle, but lost the war, fading late to finish third. Once again punched down to 1-2 while removing blinkers here, the bay was outsprinted early and settled comfortably in fifth as stablemate and $1-million OBSMAR buy Muteki (American Pharoah) led narrowly through a quarter in :21.63. Longshot firster She's Inthearmynow (Army Mule) was the first to push her chips in and overtook the pacesetter on the latter half of the bend, but Home Cooking was just getting going and blew past the new leader at the top of the lane. Under mild encouragement from Mike Smith, the favorite quickly closed the proceedings and strutted her stuff all alone through the final furlong, hitting the wire a powerful 9 1/4-length victress. Monique (Union Rags) completed the exacta.

The second 'Rising Star' for Lane's End's champion Honor Code, Home Cooking is the second foal to race out of her dam, following Gold for Kitten (Kitten's Joy), third in a pair of stakes as a 3-year-old in 2021. Her second dam produced four-time turf sprint stake winner Successful Native (Successful Appeal) and is a half to MGSW Valid Expectations (Valid Appeal), GSW Little Sister (Valid Appeal) and two other stakes victors. Bought by DARRS for $28,000 last year at Keeneland November, Olympic Avenue has a yearling Take Charge Indy filly named Liar for Hire.
