Shackleford Filly Fastest At Fourth OBS June Sale Under Tack Session

Hip No. 573, a daughter of Shackleford consigned by Navas Equine, worked a quarter in :20 3/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the fourth session of the Under Tack Show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 June Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age.

The bay filly is out of Moondancer, by Cuvee, from the family of grade one stakes winner Kitten's Dumplings.

Hip No. 637, a chestnut filly by Fed Biz consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock, Agent, turned in a quarter in :21 flat. She's out of Phantom Phasr, by Ghostzapper, from the family of Grade 1 winner Schossberg.

There were seven eighths in :10 flat.

Hip No. 570, Neon Summer, a dark bay or brown filly consigned by Hidden Brook, Agent for Patricia Generazio, is out of Mommie's Summer, by In Summation, from the family of graded stakes winner Unreal Turn.
Hip No. 603, consigned by RiceHorse Stable (Brandon & Ali Rice), is a chestnut colt by Central Banker out of Nine Taps, by Pleasant Tap, a daughter of stakes winner Nine Pines.
Hip No. 648, a gray or roan filly by Bal a Bali (BRZ) consigned by Little Farm Equine, is out of Precious Ruby, by Aragorn (IRE), from the family of grade one winner Magic of Life.
Hip No. 660, consigned by Harris Training Center LLC, is a dark bay or brown colt by Bal a Bali (BRZ) out of Prudence, by Pleasantly Perfect, from the family of Grade 1-winning millionaire Behrens.
Hip No. 661, Peinadito, a chestnut gelding by Neoloithic consigned by Two Oaks Equine, Agent, is out of Pure Genius, by Mr. Greeley, a daughter of Grade 1-placed stakes winner Keeneland Kat.
Hip No. 697, a chestnut filly by Klimt consigned by Sugar Hill LLC, is out of Reggae Song, by Speightstown, a daughter of stakes winner Queen of Song.
Hip No. 713, consigned by Envision Equine, Agent, is a bay filly by The Big Beast out of Sadie, by In Summation, a half sister to stakes placed Lucky Peridot, from the family of champion Storm Song.

Hip No. 644, Political Wave, a daughter of Ocean Knight consigned by R D Z Farm, worked the day's fastest three eighths, clocked in :34 flat. The bay filly is out of Political Miss, by Imperialism, from the family of graded stakes placed stakes winner Cryptic.

The Under Tack Show's final session begins Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. Hip No.'s 739 – 927 are scheduled to breeze.

OBS June Catalog Now Online

In the wake of 2020 June graduate Medina Spirit (Protonico)'s victory in the GI Kentucky Derby, the catalog for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age was released Monday and is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com. The iPad version of the catalog is available via the equineline Sales Catalog app. Supplemental entries are being accepted until May 19.

There are 858 2-year-olds and 15 older horses cataloged for the three-day sale, with all sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. EST. Hips 1-316 will sell Wednesday, June 9; Hips 317-632 will be offered Thursday, June 10 and Hips 633-874 plus supplements will sell Friday, June 11.

The under-tack show will have five sessions, from Wednesday, June 2 through Sunday, June 6. The daily schedules will be announced after the close of supplemental entries. All under-tack sessions begin at 7:30 a.m. and, along with the sale, will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the TDN, DRF, BloodHorse and Past The Wire websites.

Online bidding will again be available. Bidders must register in advance. For more information, go to the OBS website. Walking videos and conformation photos may be available in addition to under tack videos for each horse.

Ghostzapper Colt Easily Makes Amends at Del Mar

6th-Del Mar, $55,500, Msw, 8-29, 2yo, 6f, 1:11.10, ft.
VITTORIO (c, 2, Ghostzapper–Roberta Turner, by Smart Strike) was away slowly from a wide stall in his Aug. 1 debut, then traveled very awkwardly, covered ground on the turn and could do no better than fifth to the impressive odds-on favorite Freedom Fighter (Violence). But the betting public did not lose faith in the colt and made him the 11-10 favorite to make the requisite improvement at second asking. Much more smoothly away from gate six with Mike Smith back at the controls, the scopey bay colt moved better and sat just off of longshot pacesetter Belmont Bill (Oxbow) through an opening quarter in :22.46. Ridden quietly on the turn just awaiting his cue, Vittorio was allowed to stride into the lead three-sixteenths from home and was never in serious danger from there. He had 3 1/4 lengths on Belmont Bill at the wire. A $250,000 Keeneland September purchase last fall, Vittorio was knocked to Ben McElroy, agent for Kaleem Shah, for $750,000 at this year’s OBS June sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5. The winner’s dam is also responsible for Vittorio’s year-older half-brother Seiche (Super Saver), who was third in an Aug. 15 Del Mar maiden; a yearling Hard Spun filly and a filly foal by Union Rags. Roberta Turner is a half-sister to MSW & MGSP Foxy Danseur (Mr. Greeley), the dam of GSW Ever So Clever (Medaglia d’Oro), an additional pair of stakes horses and the 2-year-old filly Willful Woman (Nyquist), who cost $400,000 as an FTSAUG yearling last summer and is now in training at Churchill Downs. OBS President Tom Ventura Joins TDN Writers’ Room

As president of the sale company that conducted the final auction before the coronavirus pandemic shut down society as well as the first one after restrictions were lifted, OBS’s Tom Ventura has had to learn on the fly. Wednesday, he joined the TDN Writers’ Room podcast presented by Keeneland to offer his advice for the rest of the industry on keeping business going amidst COVID-19 and his impressions of the rebounding sale market.

Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Ventura said of the lessons gleaned through the pandemic, “One of the things that we learned real quickly, that you had to be pretty flexible and be able to adapt on the fly. There were restrictions coming down the pike, literally, as we were about to hold the March sale … As things were tightening up, it became very hectic, almost on an hourly basis as things were being changed. So we met with the local government officials and we got the advice, at the state level, what things were being required and what we could do. It was still feel your own way, because there wasn’t a lot of dramatic restrictions that were being put in place.”

Ventura noted that while phone bidding was ramped up for the March sale, the key to pulling off the delayed April sale in June was the incorporation of online bidding, something that will likely be a permanent feature in the auction world going forward.

“As we had to ramp back up for June, we put the online bidding into overdrive,” he said. “That was in play in terms of something that we wanted to get done, but it got moved to the head of the class real quick. And I really have to appreciate the work that [Tampa-based software company] Xcira did, because from OBS’s perspective, it’s obviously a super high priority for us. We were able and willing to work 24/7 to get it up and running for the spring sale and fortunately, Xcira jumped in right there with us to get it up. Now, it worked. I thought it was very good. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that it will down the road, but it certainly [did the job].”

Things looked ominous for both the racing and sales worlds at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but tracks resuming operations and positive results from Fasig-Tipton Midlantic this week suggest a rebound is underway. Ventura agreed that the mindset has changed and pointed to the upcoming OBS July sale as another barometer for the industry.

“The [July] sale, we’ll get a real true test of the depth of the market. We have another thousand horses on the market,” he said. “I’m hopeful, and I think based on our sale and the Fasig-Tipton sale, they held up pretty well comparatively, and they had a lot of participation. I think the other thing that’s going to benefit us now is that all the racetracks for the most part are up and running. There’s a positive frame of mind now, compared to March, as we were just in the beginning of this, as things were shutting down.”

Elsewhere on the show, in the West Point Thoroughbreds news segment, the writers recapped Fasig-Tipton Midlantic and expressed concern about the vague safety protocols announced for the GI Kentucky Derby. Later on, in light of the number of top horses who have dropped off the Derby trail, they each picked one supplemental horse for their 3-year-old fantasy stables.
