OBS April Catalog Online

A total of 1,231 2-year-olds in training have been cataloged for the Ocala Breeders Sales Company's Spring Sale, to be held Tuesday through Friday, Apr. 19-22 at the auction house's Central Florida complex.

Gracing the cover of the 2022 catalog is 'TDN Rising Star' Corniche (Quality Road), who topped last year's renewal on a bid of $1.5 million from Marette Farrell, agent for Speedway Stables, and who went on to cap an undefeated championship season with a victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar.

OBS April graduates Emblem Road (Quality Road) and Country Grammer (Tonalist) provided the exacta in the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup in Riyadh last month and are featured on the back cover of the catalog. The former was an $80,000 by agent Bruno de Berdt out of this event two years ago, while Country Grammer fetched $450,000 from Bradley Thoroughbreds LLC, agent, in 2019. Winner of the GIII Peter Pan S. as a 3-year-old while under the care of Chad Brown, he added last year's GI Hollywood Gold Cup and was first off a nine-month layoff in the Saudi Cup. Country Grammer goes in Saturday's G1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan.

Other high-profile grads of the April sale include the G1 Dubai Turf-bound MGISW Colonel Liam (Liam's Map, $1.2m–2019), the undefeated 3-year-old fillies Kathleen O. (Upstart, $275,000–2021) and 'TDN Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings, $425,000–2021) and recent G1 Coolmore Classic victress Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast, $375,000–2019).

Under-tack previews will be held over the course of six days from Sunday, Apr. 10 through Saturday, Apr. 16, beginning each morning at 8 a.m., with approximately 175 horses breezing each day.

OBS will once again offer online bidding during the sale. For complete information, click here. For the catalog, visit www.obssales.com.

Report: UAE Oaks Winner Shahama To Join Pletcher Barn

'TDN Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings), who ran her career record to a perfect four-for-four with an easy two-length victory in the G3 UAE Oaks at Meydan Feb. 18, is reportedly set to give the Mar. 26 G2 UAE Derby a miss and will instead be shipped to trainer Todd Pletcher to prepare for a start in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks May 6. The news was reported in a tweet from Dubai Racing Channel's Michael Adolphson.

A $425,000 purchase out of the 2021 OBS April Sale, the bald-faced chestnut, bred by SF Bloodstock, debuted with a nine-length victory in a seven-furlong event at Meydan Dec. 9 and was accorded 'Rising Star' status off a visually impressive 2 1/2-length score in a Jan. 1 allowance. Victorious in the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas Jan. 28, she met with some adversity in the 9 1/2-furlong UAE Oaks, but managed to overcome a poor start and a bit of a wide trip to remain undefeated.

Owned by KHK Racing and trained in Dubai by Fawzi Nass, Shahama is a half-sister to two-time Eclipse Award winner Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) and to two-time graded-stakes winner Kensei (Mr. Greeley). Connections paid the $200 nomination fee to make Shahama eligible for the Oaks at its first closing stage Feb. 19.

Pricey Midnight Storm Colt a Debut Winner at Gulfstream

4th-Gulfstream, $53,000, Msw, 1-29, 3yo, 7f, 1:24.53, ft, 1 1/4 lengths.
SWING SHIFT (c, 3, Midnight Storm–Tasunke, by Indian Charlie) and GIII Iroquois S. fourth Bourbon Heist (Practical Joke) were nigh inseparable by the betting public up until the gates opened for the former's career debut; the latter ultimately ending up the slimmest of 5-2 favorites. With first-time Lasix for his unveiling, Swing Shift broke fast from the outside slot and took command going up the backstretch with a stubborn challenger in stablemate and fellow firster Congressman (Constitution) glued to his outside. Dueling through fractions of :22.92 and :46.73 into the far turn, last year's $550,000 OBS April procurement (:20 4/5) turned his longtime shadow away late while drifting in the lane and held off fast-closing charges led by Bourbon Heist to graduate by 1 1/4 length. It was another neck back to Positive Review (Unified), who was forced to steady in mid stretch. The winner is his dam's second foal and second winner as well as being her final reported offspring when Tasunke came up barren in 2020 after visiting Mshawish. Swing Shift was the most expensive of 30 juveniles to switch hands by Midnight Storm in the ring last year. The result stood after a stewards inquiry and a trainer objection from Saffie Joseph, Jr. (trainer of Positive Review) involving the stretch run. Sales history: $180,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP; $550,000 2yo '21 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,800. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Shahama Remains Unbeaten In Three Starts With Friday’s UAE 1,000 Guineas Score

KHK Racing's Shahama is three for three and a stakes winner after a 3 3/4-length victory in the $150,000 UAE 1,000 Guineas on Friday at Meydan. The 3-year-old daughter of Munnings, a half sister to champion Lookin At Lucky, relaxed in the early going, rallied to take command inside the quarter pole and cruised home from there.

“I was very impressed,” said jockey Adrie De Vries. “The race went totally different than I expected; I thought there would be a really strong pace with three sprinters in there but they all had the same plan. I wanted to take the pace out, which the outside draw helped me do and got me in a handy position. From there it was only a question of pushing the button and she answered every question.

“There's plenty left in the tank. She's only doing what you ask her to do and I haven't got serious with her yet.”

Trained by Fawzi Nass, she has earned $133,484 to date. After speeding an Under Tack quarter in :21 flat, she was purchased for $425,000 by her trainer out of the Eddie Woods consignment at the 2021 OBS April Sale.

While the Saudi Derby might be tempting, connections are leaning towards staying in Dubai with the daughter of Munnings. The Group 3 UAE Oaks looks the next step towards possibly taking on colts in the Group 2 UAE Derby.

“The Oaks looks the obvious next race,” added De Vries. “I'm not afraid about going further; any distance up to a mile and a quarter will suit her.”
