Big Field Set for Raven Run

A wide-open field of 13 sophomore filly sprinters will line up for Saturday's GII Lexus Raven Run S. at Keeneland.

'TDN Rising Star' Souper Sensational (Curlin) enters in good form in her last three starts since receiving a freshening. A powerful winner of Belmont's GIII Victory Ride S. July 10, the Live Oak colorbearer followed with a second-place finish behind likely GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint second choice Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot) in the GI Longines Test S. Aug. 7 and repeated that same position behind the streaking Cilla (California Chrome) after leading in the stretch as the 4-5 favorite in the GII Prioress S. back at the Spa Sept. 4.

Juddmonte homebred Obligatory (Curlin), drawn widest of all for Bill Mott here, is favored at 3-1 on the morning line. Minus a disappointing fifth after a slow start in the Test, the GII Eight Belles S. upsetter has strong second-place finishes going longer behind Search Results (Flatter) in the one-mile GI Acorn S. June 5 and Clairiere (Curlin) in the 1 1/16-mile GI Cotillion S. last time Sept. 25.

Mott will also saddle Godolphin homebred Caramel Swirl (Union Rags), a big-figure Saratoga allowance winner July 24 in her comebacker following a dull seventh in the Eight Belles. She was a disappointing fourth as the heavy favorite in the two-turn GIII Charles Town Oaks last time Aug. 27.

Cilla, Souper Sensational Renew Rivalry In Raven Run

P. Dale Ladner's Cilla and Live Oak Plantation's Souper Sensational, who finished a half-length apart in last month's Prioress (G2) at Saratoga, headline a field of 13 3-year-old fillies entered Wednesday for Saturday's 23rd running of the $250,000 Lexus Raven Run (G2) going 7 furlongs on the main track at Keeneland.

The Lexus Raven Run is scheduled as the ninth race on Saturday's 10-race program with a 5:16 p.m. ET post time. First post Saturday is 1 p.m.

Trained by Brett Brinkman, Cilla returned Tuesday afternoon to Keeneland, where she finished sixth as a 62-1 shot in the Beaumont (G3) Presented by Keeneland Select. Since then, the Louisiana-bred daughter of California Chrome has won three consecutive races highlighted by the Prioress victory.

Tyler Gaffalione will have the mount Saturday and break from post position seven.

Souper Sensational, winner of the Victory Ride (G3) at Belmont Park who has placed in three graded stakes, was runner-up in the Grade 1 Test prior to her run in the Prioress. Trained by Mark Casse, Souper Sensational will exit post position three and be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr.

Another Grade 2 winner in the field is Juddmonte's homebred Obligatory.

Trained by Bill Mott, Obligatory won the Eight Belles (G2) on April 30 at Churchill Downs going 7 furlongs. Runner-up in the Cotillion (G1) at Parx in her most recent start, Obligatory drew post 13 and will be ridden by Florent Geroux.

  3. Souper Sensational (Santana Jr., 118)

Clairiere Gets First Grade 1 Win In Cotillion At Parx

Facing a loaded field of 3-year-old fillies, lacking only division leader Malathaat, Clairiere went wide around the far turn and dug in through the stretch to win the Grade 1 Cotillion by two lengths at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Penn.

Breaking from post six under Ricardo Santana, Jr., Clairiere settled in sixth around the first turn behind Always Carina on the lead and Obligatory and Maracuja rounding out the top three. Into the far turn of the 1 1/16-mile Cotillion, Clairiere made up ground on the outside of horses, going three-wide into the stretch with Obligatory, Always Carina, and Maracuja to her inside.

Down the Parx straight, Army Wife loomed up between horses to Clairiere's inside, but none of them had enough to get by the Steve Asmussen filly. Clairiere dug in, taking the lead in late stretch to win, with Obligatory, Army Wife, and Maracuja completing the top four.

The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:44.1. Find this race's chart here.

Clairiere paid $7.20, $3,60, and $2.60. Obligatory paid $4.20 and $3.00. Army Wife paid $2.80.

Bred in Kentucky by owner Stonestreet Stables, Clairiere is by Curlin out of the Bernardini mare Cavorting. The G1 Cotillion is her second win in seven starts in 2021 and her first Grade 1, for a lifetime record of three wins in eight starts and career earnings of $1,190,992.

Clairiere Caps Curlin Exacta in Cotillion

Stonestreet homebred Clairiere (Curlin) kicked home convincingly in Saturday's GI Cotillion S. at Parx to earn a first highest-level victory and snap a five-race winless streak while capping an exacta for her sire. A neck winner of the GII Rachel Alexandra S. in February, the Steve Asmussen pupil was second best to familiar foe Travel Column (Frosted) in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks a month later. She was fourth behind fellow Stonestreet product Malathaat (Curlin) in the GI Kentucky Oaks Apr. 30, third in the GII Mother Goose S. at Belmont June 26 and filled out another trifecta when Maracuja (Honor Code) upended Malathaat in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga July 24. Clairiere was shortening up from a second-place run behind Malathaat in the 10-panel GI Alabama S. back at the Spa Aug. 21, and was the lukewarm 5-2 favorite to provide Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen with a record fourth Cotillion trophy.

Breaking inward a bit at the start, Clairiere quickly recovered but was forced to tap on the brakes around the first turn before finally settling in third last and out in the clear. Main market rival Always Carina (Malibu Moon), meanwhile, showed the way through easy splits of :24.92 and :49.67 as Obligatory applied token pressure. Clairiere began to pick off foes rapidly heading around the final bend, and powered to the fore in midstretch to prove clearly best.

“I can't tell you how much it means for Clairiere and Stonestreet and that family that she comes from,” said Asmussen. “She was carrying along nicely within herself within striking range. She's kept herself in great company all year and getting good when it matters most. Obviously, we're going to speak to Stonestreet and stuff [with regards to a start in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff], with the numbers she's got she's consistently getting faster at the right time.”

Pedigree Note:

Clairiere is the 16th Grade I winner for her two-time Horse of the Year sire, who stands at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. She is also the second bred on the cross of Curlin over Bernardini after GI Coaching Club American Oaks victress Paris Lights. The GI Preakness S. winner also has an additional six Grade I winners out of daughters of sons or grandsons of Seattle Slew. The late Bernardini is rapidly making a name for himself as a broodmare sire, and the GI Cotillion S. star is his 12th Grade I winner in that role.

The first foal out of 'TDN Rising Star' and later GI Test S., GI Ogden Phipps S. and GI Personal Ensign S. heroine Cavorting, Clairiere is followed by juvenile filly La Crete (Medaglia d'Oro), and a yearling colt by Curlin that brought $550,000 from Muir Hut Stables during the recent Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Cavorting, a daughter of GII Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup H. heroine Promenade Girl (Carson City), was barren to Quality Road for this year, but was bred back to Into Mischief this spring. She is also a half-sister to GII Penn Mile S. winner Moon Colony (Uncle Mo), while in the extended family is GI Californian S. scorer Another Review (Buckaroo), GI Santa Barbara H. winner No Review (Nodouble) and MGSW Dance Colony (Pleasant Colony), runner-up in the GI Gazelle H.
